Epidermal Cyst on the Scalp Induced by Forceps Injury During Delivery: A Case Report and Epidemiological Analysis of 3949 Patients.

BACKGROUND: Epidermal cysts are common benign epithelial tumors. They are known to result from penetrating-type injuries or infection of human papillomavirus. The differential diagnosis commonly includes multiplex steatocystoma, lipoma, and neurofibroma. Pathological examination is essential for diagnosis, and surgical excision is the recommended treatment. OBJECTIVE: We report a case in a man who presented with a cystic lesion on the scalp over 22 years to provide clinical evidence for mechanism of epidermal cysts. We conducted epidemiological analysis of 3949 patients with epidermal cysts t

An Assessment of Clinician Knowledge of Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Insights from a Multidisciplinary Survey Study.

Background/Objectives: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, debilitating skin disease primarily diagnosed through clinical examination. Despite its characteristic clinical features, HS remains under-recognized and frequently misclassified, especially by non-dermatologist clinicians. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of HS across various specialties, identify knowledge gaps, and inform targeted educational strategies to reduce diagnostic delays. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted during multidisciplinary scientific conferences, enrolling 655 clinicians incl

Eruptive vellus hair cysts: a systematic review.

We report the results of the first systematic review of the worldwide literature on eruptive vellus hair cysts (EVHC). It is likely that EVHC are less rare than it may appear from the scarcity of related publications in the literature. EVHC may be present at birth and may appear at any age, although they show a clear trend towards occurring during the first 3 decades of life. A strong clue to the heavy influence of genes on the occurrence of EVHC is provided by the numerous reports of families in whom two or more members were affected. EVHC lesions present clinically in a rather monomorphous f

Keratin gene mutations in disorders of human skin and its appendages.

Keratins, the major structural protein of all epithelia are a diverse group of cytoskeletal scaffolding proteins that form intermediate filament networks, providing structural support to keratinocytes that maintain the integrity of the skin. Expression of keratin genes is usually regulated by differentiation of the epidermal cells within the stratifying squamous epithelium. Amongst the 54 known functional keratin genes in humans, about 22 different genes including, the cornea, hair and hair follicle-specific keratins have been implicated in a wide range of hereditary diseases. The exact phenot

Human keratin diseases: hereditary fragility of specific epithelial tissues.

Keratins are heteropolymeric proteins which form the intermediate filament cytoskeleton in epithelial cells. Since 1991, mutations in several keratin genes have been found to cause a variety of human diseases affecting the epidermis and other epithelial structures. Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) was the first mechanobullous disease for which the underlying genetic lesion was found, with mutations in both the K5 and K14 genes rendering basal epidermal keratinocytes less resilient to trauma, resulting in skin fragility. The site of mutation in the keratin protein correlates with phenotypic

A novel APC mutation identified in a large Chinese family with familial adenomatous polyposis and a brief literature review.

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), an autosomal dominant disease, is a colon cancer predisposition syndrome that manifests as a large number of adenomatous polyps. Mutations in the Adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene are responsible for the majority of cases of FAP. The purpose of the present study was to report the clinical features of a Chinese family with FAP and screen for novel mutations using the targeted next‑generation sequencing technology. Among the 29 family members, 12 were diagnosed of FAP. Based on an established filtering strategy and data analyses, along with confirmation

Diseases associated with hidranitis suppurativa: part 2 of a series on hidradenitis.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a pathologic follicular disease, impacts patients' lives profoundly and usually occurs in isolation. The diseases with the strongest association are obesity, depression, and pain. HS is associated with many diseases including acne conglobata (AC), dissecting cellulitis, pilonidal cysts, and obesity. Pyoderma fistulans sinifica (fox den disease) appears to be the same entity as Hurley Stage 2 of 3 HS. The rate of acne vulgaris in HS patients mirrors unaffected controls. The most common, albeit still uncommon, association is with seronegative, haplotype unlinked ar

Dermoscopy of Pilonidal Cyst Disease: A Case-series.

Dear Editor, Pilonidal cyst disease is a common, acquired, inflammatory disease predominantly affecting the natal clefts of the buttocks (1,2). The disease has a predilection for men, with a male-to-female ratio of 3-4:1. Patients are generally young, towards the end of second decade of life. Lesions are initially asymptomatic, while the development of complications such as abscess formation is associated with pain and discharge (1). Patients with pilonidal cyst disease may present to dermatology outpatient clinics, especially when the disease is asymptomatic. Herein we report the dermoscopic
