[Sternum-hyoid muscle transposition and arytenoid adduction for unilateral vocal cord paralysis].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the therapeutic effect of sternum-hyoid muscle transposition and arytenoid adduction for unilateral vocal cord paralysis (UVCP). METHODS: Included in this study were 19 patients with UVCP lasted for 12 months to 15 years. The surgical technique was as follows. The thyroid cartilage was engaged with a skin hook and gently rotated anteriorly. The lateral-inferior corner of the thyroid cartilage was exposed and the muscular process of the arytenoid was identified. Then, the thyroid lamina on the involved side was parasagittally separated 5 mm off the midline. The inner peri

A statistical shape model of the human sternum including cortical bone thickness.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding population-level variation in bone size and shape is important for general biomechanics, clinical assessments, and for developing heterogeneous human body models used in safety restraint design. Thoracic injuries are common in severe motor vehicle crashes, and although rib fractures are frequently studied, sternal fractures also occur in these scenarios. This study aimed to investigate how demographic factors-sex, age, stature, and BMI-relate to variations in sternal size, shape, and cortical thickness, all important factors for fracture tolerance. METHODS: Compute

Rib and Sternum Fractures From Falls: Global Burden of Disease and Predictions.

BACKGROUND: By combining existing Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data with the economic conditions of different regions, we can better understand disease trends and make more accurate estimations, facilitating effective public health interventions. Medical institutions can consequently allocate resources more efficiently. For patients, this helps lower disease risk and reduce the overall disease burden in affected areas. METHODS: We analyzed health patterns in 204 countries using GBD 2021 methodologies and conducted separate analyses of disease burden in China and worldwide. We estimated inci

Chondrosarcoma of the Sternum: Surgical Challenges, Chest Wall Reconstruction, and Postoperative Management.

Although rare, primary chondrosarcoma is the most frequent malignant tumor of the sternum. It commonly manifests as a painful, expanding mass arising from the costochondrosternal junction. Since it is resistant to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, surgical resection with reconstruction is the preferred treatment. A 50-year-old male presented with swelling over the left fourth sternocostal joint, gradually increasing in size. Imaging and clinical assessment suggested an infiltrative neoplasm, and surgical resection was indicated. The patient underwent a partial sternectomy, including a resection o

Proposing the Retrosternal Angle as a Diagnostic Measure for Banana Sternum in Pectus Excavatum.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Anteriorly convex sternum in pectus excavatum, also known as banana sternum (BS), influences decision-making during repair and, especially, the need to cross bars. However, the definition of BS remains subjective. Thus, we aim to propose the retrosternal angle (RSA) as a diagnostic measure for the discrimination of BS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a cohort of patients who underwent a minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) between October 2016 and October 2023 at our Pectus Clinic. Five expert thoracic surgeons individually reviewed their m

A case of solitary metastatic colon adenocarcinoma of the sternum: an unusual metastatic site.

Colorectal cancer is a prevalent malignancy; it ranks as the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Despite the effectiveness of surgical intervention for primary tumors, ~30% of patients develop metastases, commonly in the regional lymph nodes, liver, lungs, and peritoneum. Bone metastasis is relatively rare but can occur, typically affecting vertebrae, pelvis, femur, and humerus. This study presents a 68-year-old patient with a history of locally advanced colon cancer who presented with a rapidly enlarging, painful sternal mass. Imaging and biopsy confirmed metastatic colon a

A case of soft-tissue tumor over the sternum: A rare case report.

The objective is to report a rare case of extragonadal seminoma over the manubrium sterni on the chest wall. A 42-year-old male patient, a chronic alcoholic for 10 years presented with a firm mass of approximate size 10 cm × 12 cm overlying the manubrium part of the sternum. A clinical diagnosis of soft-tissue tumor was made. All relevant preoperative workup was done. Fine-needle aspiration cytology of the mass was suggestive of serous cystic lesion with chronic inflammation. Wide local excision of the mass and primary closure of the wound was done, followed by histopathological examination. U

Non-Tumorous Diseases of the Sternum and Its Articulations: At the Front Gate of the Chest.

Abnormalities of the sternal and peri-sternal regions are commonly seen in clinical practice and may be one of the important causes of chest pain particularly anterior chest wall pain. While reading computed tomography (CT) of the chest for evaluation of chest pain, the sternal region is either easily overlooked or its abnormality is often detected incidentally. This article will provide an overview of normal sternal anatomy and congenital variants as well as a variety of non-tumorous pathologic conditions of the sternum and adjacent joints, with emphasis on CT, to help radiologists, particula

Impending rupture of aortic aneurysm eroding skin and sternum: a rare condition.

A rare presentation of ascending aortic aneurysm eroding into the anterior chest wall and skin is described. Only a few reports of this lethal condition associated with luetic disease have been published previously. A 72-year-old man with a history of blunt chest injury subsequently developed a saccular aneurysm of the ascending aorta protruding out of the anterior chest wall. He was successfully treated with a surgical intervention.

Effect of internal fixation of the sternum using bioabsorbable pins in small children.

OBJECTIVES: A sternal pin can be used to internally fix the reapproximated sternum after midline sternotomy. This paper will evaluate the effectiveness of using a sternal pin in small children by means of a computer tomography scan. METHODS: Propensity score matching was performed for patients undergoing a first-time median sternotomy from April 2012 to December 2014 with a follow-up computer tomography scan after 6 months. Seventeen matched patients were selected for both the control and the sternal pin groups. The angle of the sternal reflection at the joint surface was measured by computer

Extranodal presentation of Hodgkin's lymphoma of the sternum: A case report and review of the literature.

Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) is typically a systemic disease with involvement of the cervical, supraclavicular and mediastinal lymph nodes. An extra-nodal presentation of HL is unusual and seldom encountered in the clinic. The most common sites of presentation for extra-nodal extension are the spleen, liver, lungs, bones and marrow. The bones that are frequently involved are the vertebrae, pelvis, ribs and femur. Involvement of the sternum has occasionally been reported. The current study presents an unusual case on the extra-nodal presentation of HL of the sternum arising in a 25-year-old woman, a

Solitary plasmacytoma of the sternum detected incidentally by MR imaging of the cervical spine.

We incidentally detected a case of solitary plasmacytoma of the sternum by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the cervical spine. At detection, the patient had no symptoms, the lesion was localized in the bone marrow of the sternum, and there were no findings of bone destruction. The lesion showed high contrast on diffusion-weighted images, gradually enlarged over 3 years, and was confirmed as a solitary plasmacytoma at open biopsy 3 years after detection. Radiologists should pay attention to incidental findings in the upper part of the sternum at MR imaging examination of the cervical spine.

Prenatal ultrasonography and neonatal imaging of complete cleft sternum: a case report.

The prenatal diagnosis of a complete cleft sternum was established in a fetus of a twin pregnancy at 22 weeks' gestation. We present the prenatal imaging and correlation with postnatal magnetic resonance imaging and high-resolution ultrasonography. Thinned and depressed midline anterior chest wall transmitting the cardiac pulsation was the clue to the diagnosis, and the defective sternum could be identified on close sonographic observation. Successful surgical correction was undertaken at 2 months of age. There were no major associated abnormalities such as ectopia cordis or midline abdominal

[Cleft of the lower lip, mandible and sternum. A case report and review of the literature].

The Authors report a case of cleft interesting the lower lip and mandible with a sternal cleft. This association is exceptional, it was described in three world cases to this day. At this occasion, a review of the literature is realized, in particular concerning the associated malformatives anomalies and the therapeutic behaviour. It seems to us indispensable to realize an early reconstruction, specially bone correction, and to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to obtain a good result and a better social incorporation of the child.

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the sternum: a case report of successful treatment with radiotherapy.

An unusual case of a lytic, expanding lesion of the manubrium with histological diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst in a 13-year-old girl is presented. After a recurrence following primary surgery, the patient was treated successfully by external beam radiotherapy. A total dose of 25.2 Gy was delivered using conventional fractionation (1.8 Gy day(-1)) to the whole sternum. She remains recurrence- and symptom-free 46 months after the end of the treatment. This is the sixth patient with primary aneurysmal bone cyst in the sternal region, the first paediatric patient for this location, and the firs

Sternum screw: analysis of a novel approach to the closure of the chest after surgery.

BACKGROUND: To show the benefits of using a novel approach to closure of the median sternotomy through a mechanical model and mechanical testing. Simple cannulated screws are placed on either side of the sternotomy. Conventional stainless steel wire is passed through the cannula of each screw and the sternotomy is closed in the usual manner. METHODS: Hertzian contact analysis was used to estimate the stress between the wire and the sternum. Mechanical testing was used to compare using wire on its own with a sternum screw plus wire. Ten samples of balsa wood (sternum substitute) had wire place

The osteology of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana): vertebral column, ribs and sternum.

The vertebral column, sternum and ribs of the African elephant were studied and illustrated. In the cervical series, the vertebrae are characterized by very short (compressed) vertebral bodies and short spinous processes. There are 20-21 thoracic vertebrae that carry ribs, and three lumbar vertebrae. The neural arches of the five sacral vertebrae fuse with each other as well as with the wings of the ilium, while the intervertebral discs do not ossify and the vertebral bodies remain separate. There are 19-21 caudal vertebrae. In the latter, the neural arches of only the first five to six verteb

The management of severe adherence of mediastinal structures to the sternum during cardiac reoperations.

The author's method for sternal re-entry in cases of extremely dense mediastinal adhesions is described. The anterior lamina and the spongiosa of the sternum is cut with an osteotome and the posterior lamina is divided using the Lebsche knife so as to leave the densely adhered patch of the posterior lamina on the underlying soft tissue. These bone fragments may be left in loco or, if the course of the operation requires it, they may be gently raised and peeled off. Removal of such a portion or portions of the posterior lamina does not appreciably weaken the sternum and safe sternal closure may
