Cross-resistance to lincosamides, streptogramins A and pleuromutilins in Streptococcus agalactiae isolates from the USA.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a leading cause of meningitis, sepsis and pneumonia in neonates in the United States. GBS also causes invasive disease in older infants, pregnant women, children and young adults with underlying medical conditions, and older adults. Resistance to lincosamides in the absence of erythromycin resistance is rare in GBS, but has been previously reported in clinical isolates, both on its own or in combination with resistance to streptogramins A and pleuromutilins (L/LSA/LSAP phenotypes). OBJECTIVES: To retrospectively screen the A

Performance of RT-PCR in the detection of Streptococcus agalactiae in the anogenital tract of pregnant women.

INTRODUCTION: Infection with Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the most frequent in the first weeks of life of a newborn. The identification of pregnant women with GBS colonization may reduce neonatal infection. METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated the performance of real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect GBS colonization in the anogenital tract of pregnant women. Anogenital swabs were collected from 266 pregnant women from December 2010 to August 2011. GBS was detected using culture (gold standard) and RT-PCR to determine sip gene expression. The presence of DNA was con

[Spondylodiscitis and sacroiliitis due to Streptococcus agalactiae in adults: clinical case and literature review].

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus agalactiae is a well-known pathogen related with infection in newborns, and in women during pregnancy and the puerperium. In recent years it has been described as a causal agent in invasive disease in immunodepressed adults and those with other severe underlying pathologies. METHODS: We describe a case of S. agalactiae spondylodiscitis and concomitant bilateral sacroiliitis in an adult with no known underlying diseases. A systematic review of the related literature was performed (MEDLINE and EMBASE, up to December 2003). RESULTS: The literature search retrieved on

[Purulent pericarditis with pericardial tamponade caused by Streptococcus agalactiae and Salmonella enterica no typhi].

Purulent pericarditis (PP) is an uncommon condition with high mortality. In the preantibiotic period, Staphyloccocus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae were the most common etiologic agents. We describe the case of a 75-year old man with septic shock, PP and cardiac tamponade caused by Streptococcus agalactiae and Salmonella enterica no-typhi. To our knowledge this association of pathogenic organisms has not been previously reported in the literature. The pathogenesis is here reviewed, and in our patient presumably, purulent pericarditis occurred via hematogeneus spread undergoing upper gastr

Cytokine expression of cord and adult blood mononuclear cells in response to Streptococcus agalactiae.

Neonatal bacterial sepsis is often characterized by a fulminant clinical course and highly elevated plasma levels of proinflammatory cytokines. To evaluate in vitro activation of the neonatal immune system by specific infectious stimuli, cord blood cells from healthy neonates were examined for expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), IL-1beta, IL-6, and IL-8 in response to Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS), lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and lipoteichoic acid (LTA). Cytokine-expression was compared in mononuclear cells from cord and adult peripheral blood. TNF-alpha and IL-6 levels in th

[Acute meningitis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae in adult patient with a spinal fluid fistula].

Acute meningitis in adults caused by Streptococcus agalactiae is a rare entity. To our knowledge, there are only two cases associated with a central spinal fluid fistula published in the English literature from 1942 to the present. We report the third case. It was diagnosed in a 60-year-old woman with a twelve-year history of cerebrospinal rhinorrhea after a blunt head trauma. A CT scan of the base of the skull with administration of intrathecal contrast showed a disruption of the posterior and superior aspect of the sphenoid sinus with central spinal fluid leakage.

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B) endocarditis--a description of twelve cases and review of the literature.

The group B streptococcus has been shown to be a major cause of meningitis in the newborn and an occasional cause of endocarditis and sepsis in postpartum women. Little attention has been devoted to this organism as a cause of bacterial endocarditis. Twelve patients with group B streptococcal endocarditis were seen at The Presbyterian Hospital, New York, NY, between 1974 and 1985. There were seven women, five men. Ages ranged from 32 to 81 years. Serious underlying disease was present in all - diabetes mellitus in seven, carcinoma in three (bladder in two, and breast in one), alcoholism in thr

Combating Streptococcus agalactiae infections by designing a multi-epitope vaccine using molecular dynamic simulations.

AIM: To construct a multi-epitope vaccine using virulent proteins of Streptococcus agalactiae strain 2603 V/R. BACKGROUND: Streptococcus agalactiae strain 2603 V/R is causative agent of various diseases and infections in neonates, pregnant women as well as elderly patients with significant underlying diseases. World health organisation reported high number of new born deaths and stillbirths. Various studies have shown that no licensed vaccine is available against meningitis caused by GBS. Therefore, new preventive methods against GBS are desirable to be developed. OBJECTIVES: 1. To identify

Identification, molecular typing, antimicrobial susceptibility, and experimental pathogenicity of Streptococcus agalactiae isolated from Tilapia.

Streptococcosis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae is widespread in the world, especially in south Asia and southeast Asia. In this study, an S. agalactiae isolate collected from diseased fish in India was molecularly confirmed through GAPDH-targeted PCR, and further validated by sequencing. Genotyping revealed distinct genomic relationships among regional isolates; pulsed-field gel electrophoresis identified three pulsotypes with the Indian isolate clustering closely with two Taiwanese isolates under both ApaI and SmaI digestion, while ERIC-PCR grouped the Indian strain with a Taiwanese strai

Type VII secretion system promotes Streptococcus agalactiae virulence through magnesium acquisition and capsule maintenance.

Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as group B Streptococcus (GBS), is a major pathogen causing substantial economic losses in global tilapia aquaculture. The type VII secretion system (T7SS), present in Actinobacteria and Firmicutes, secretes effector proteins implicated in bacterial virulence, yet its functional mechanisms remain poorly defined. Here, we constructed an essC deletion mutant (∆essC) in S. agalactiae strain HN016 to investigate the role of T7SS in virulence. The ∆essC exhibited impaired growth and declined intracellular magnesium ion concentration in THB or magnesium-limited c

Molecular characteristics and antibiotic resistance mechanisms of clindamycin-resistant Streptococcus agalactiae isolates in China.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a major cause of neonatal infections with high morbidity and mortality, and clindamycin is the main antibiotic used to treat GBS infections in patients allergic to penicillin. We aimed to analyse the antibiotic sensitivity, sequence types, serotypes, virulence factors, and antibiotic resistance mechanisms of clinically isolated clindamycin-resistant S. agalactiae and provide basic data for the treatment, prevention, and control of clinical infection of S. agalactiae. A total of 110 strains of clindamycin-resistant S. agalactiae were coll

Virulence Profiles and Antimicrobial Resistance of Streptococcus agalactiae Infective and Colonizing Strains from Argentina.

Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) is a colonizing agent in pregnant women, the main cause of invasive neonatal infections, and the reason of serious diseases in non-pregnant adults. Several virulence determinants are involved in the pathogenesis. These include capsular polysaccharide, surface-localized proteins, and toxins. Penicillin is considered the first choice antibiotic for the treatment and prophylaxis; erythromycin, clindamycin and fluoroquinolones are recommended alternatives for penicillin-allergic GBS carriers or patients. Our objective was to investigate the virulence genetic characte

Streptococcus agalactiae maternal colonization, antibiotic resistance and serotype profiles in Africa: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal rectovaginal colonization with Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus or GBS) is the most common route for the GBS disease in the perinatal period. The knowledge of maternal colonization, antibiotic resistance and serotype profiles is substantially needed to formulate the broad vaccine. However, it has not been estimated in Africa. This meta-analysis was aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of colonization, antibiotic resistance and serotype profiles of GBS reported in Africa. METHODS: Potentially relevant studies from 1989 to 31th January, 2019 were retrieve
