A review of post-traumatic stress disorder. Part II: Treatment.

This paper describes the history of the development of understanding of psychological responses to traumatic life-events and their treatment. One major response, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is a recognized condition which has appeared relatively recently in diagnostic manuals. PTSD is a condition of major significance, not only to mental health professionals, but also to trauma surgeons and allied professionals. This paper focuses on the current definition of PTSD in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10, 1992, World Health Organization) and the Diagnostic and Statist

The comorbidity of post-traumatic stress disorder and suicidality in Vietnam veterans.

Vietnam veterans (N = 232) recruited from three sources were assessed for suicidal thinking and behaviors, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. Findings support the notion that suicidal thoughts are prevalent in this group, with veterans in psychotherapy reporting a greater likelihood of such symptoms (82.6%) than veterans in the community (35.7%) or those seeking assistance through a veteran's outreach center (66.7%). Thoughts of ending one's life and a previous suicide attempt were significantly correlated with a diagnosis of PTSD (r = .53, p < .001; and r = .

Post-traumatic stress disorder and GI endoscopy: a case study.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be caused by experiencing or witnessing a variety of harsh traumatic events. Rape, burglary, war, torture, violence, and other catastrophic events have been known to precipitate flashbacks, nightmares, and inability to cope with the demands of daily life. The symptoms associated with PTSD can interfere with work, sleep, appetite, relationships, and health. In a Veterans Administration hospital population, PTSD is not an uncommon patient problem: it usually results from witnessing and/or participating in war or military service-related circumstances. OnTEPT: a multimodal OWL ontology for post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a heterogeneous neuropsychiatric condition that develops after exposure to traumatic events. Its diagnosis is currently governed by two major international classification systems, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and International Classification of Diseases) ICD, which differ in structure, granularity, and diagnostic thresholds. Moreover, PTSD assessment is also multimodal, spanning structured interviews, self-report psychometric instruments, and increasing neurophysiological recordings such as electroencephalograp

Hereditary angioedema and post traumatic stress disorder: a reciprocal relationship?

BACKGROUND: Hereditary angioedema (HAE) patients endure repeated unpredictable trauma associated with attacks of disfiguring swelling, severe abdominal pain, risk of asphyxiation or experiences with loss of a loved one with HAE. Our study investigated the prevalence of presumptive post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for HAE due to C1 inhibitor deficiency (HAE-C1INH). RESULTS: Participants ≥ 18 with HAE-C1INH were recruited from the US HAE Association: Cohort 1, self-referred; Cohort 2, randomized from the HAEA membership. Participants completed 8 on-line questionnaires: (1) HAE survey; (2)

Agmatinase and Telomerase Levels in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Children.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma is the impairment of an individual's ability to integrate emotions and cognitions after experiencing events. Psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop in individuals following traumatic events. Traumas experienced by children can cause PTSD, just as it is encountered in adults who experience trauma. Alterations in the polyamine synthesis pathway and telomerase activity have been reported to be associated with cellular stress responses and neurobiological processes. Therefore, this study examines polyamine synthesis pathway enzyme levels a

Telomere Dynamics in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A Critical Synthesis.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a mental disorder caused by exposure to traumatic stress, affects 5-10% of the world's population. There is some evidence that PTSD is associated with accelerated cellular aging, leading to an increased risk of medical and neurodegenerative comorbidities. Alterations in telomere length (TL) and telomerase enzyme activity have been proposed as biomarkers of this process. This hypothesis was seemingly confirmed in preliminary research, but more recent studies have yielded mixed results. The current narrative review was conducted to provide a critical synthe

High and Low Dose Ketamine in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Ketamine has unique properties making it a desirable drug to induce general anesthesia during surgery. However, it is typically reserved for children and adolescent patients due to its side effects in adults, including vivid dreams, hallucinations, and confusional states that may be pleasant or distressing. These symptoms may affect patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a trauma-related psychological disorder that is mainly characterized by intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, and re-experiencing of the trauma event. Most of current research focuses on the use of sub-anes

Metacognitive therapy in post-traumatic stress disorder: A meta- analysis.

The metacognitive model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) proposes that the natural emotional processing following a traumatic event may be impaired due to the negative effects (thoughts and emotions) related to the trauma and its memory. Metacognitive Therapy (MCT) is increasingly being used as a treatment for PTSD. This meta-analysis aimed to examine the effectiveness of MCT clinical outcomes in treating PTSD over the past two decades. In this meta-analysis, we analyzed experimental studies published between January 2000 and October 2022, in which MCT was administered to young and adu

Heparin as a Potential Therapeutic Substance for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

In sexually mature male Wistar rats with modeled post-traumatic stress disorder, personalized characteristics of neurobiological reactions in the population of predator-induced stress-resilient and stress-susceptible heparinized animals were determined. Characteristics of the systemic response of immune mechanisms, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, behavioral manifestations, as well as basic properties of the CNS (excitation/inhibition) are presented. The study demonstrated encouraging positive results of the course administration of unfractionated heparin at a dose below the therapeutic an

MicroRNAs as potential biomarkers for diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental disorder caused by exposure to severe traumatic life events. Currently, there are no validated biomarkers or laboratory tests that can distinguish between trauma survivors with and without post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, the heterogeneity of clinical presentations of post-traumatic stress disorder and the overlap of symptoms with other conditions can lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Evidence suggests that this condition is a multisystem disorder that affects many biological systems, raising the possibility that peripheral

Immune-metabolic mechanisms of post-traumatic stress disorder and atherosclerosis.

The interaction of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and atherosclerosis (AS) increase the risk of mortality. Metabolism and immunity play important roles in the comorbidity associated with PTSD and AS. The adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase/mammalian target of rapamycin and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt pathways are attractive research topics in the fields of metabolism, immunity, and autophagy. They may be effective intervention targets in the prevention and treatment of PTSD comorbidity with AS. Herein, we comprehensively review metabolic factors, including glutamate a

[Contribution of equine therapy in the management of post-traumatic stress disorder].

For several years, animal-mediated therapies have been used in the treatment of psychiatric patients. Post-traumatic stress disorder has the particularity of being generated by an external event in a person a priori free of mental pathology. In this disorder, various so-called targeted psychotherapies have proven to be effective, including equine therapy.
