[Oral hygiene habits and dental caries among students. Investigation of 150 students in university housing in Dakar, Senegal].

The objective of this study is to describe the oral hygiene habits and the status of the teeth decay of 150 senegalese students living in a university campus. The results showed that the toothbrush as mean of oral hygiene supplanted the traditional means such as "cure dents" or water rinse with finger. Results showed also a high rate decay (60%) but the CAO index remained low (2.04%). We founded an improvement of dental decay status with an increasing daily number of tooth brushing: we noted a decreasing dental plaque deposition rate, a decreasing decay rate and a CAO index remaining low until

Tailoring pedagogical methods to enhance student engagement through a student-faculty partnership in an undergraduate immunology course.

Getting real-time feedback on pedagogical methods used in the classroom can be a challenge due to a variety of reasons, including the classroom format, instructor lecturing styles, as well as weariness of students to engage instructors. However, a structured semester-long student-faculty partnership can serve as a powerful tool to enhance teaching effectiveness and student engagement. We describe here our version of a student-faculty partnership program (SFPP) model in an upper-level undergraduate Immunology course where a student from a non-science major was embedded in the course to observe

Student and Staff Knowledge of School Tobacco Policies and Student E-Cigarette Use, California 2022-2023.

BACKGROUND: Since 2016, California has prohibited e-cigarette use alongside smoking in K-12 schools. School tobacco policies may reduce student e-cigarette use. METHODS: We analyzed 2022 to 2023 California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) and School Staff Survey data (n = 219,114). Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine associations between student and staff awareness of school tobacco policies and current e-cigarette use, adjusting for demographics. RESULTS: Among students, 5.2% reported current e-cigarette use; 69.6% knew of a school policy. Most staff knew the policy (91.2%), but

What does "disability" mean for medical students? An exploration of the words medical students associate with the term "disability".

CONTEXT: Disability teaching is a core theme in undergraduate medical education. Medical students bring a range of experiences of disability to their medical training. AIM: The principal aim of this study was to explore the words that medical students associate with the term "disability" and to consider how the resulting information could inform teaching. A secondary aim was to see if a short disability course changed the word associations. METHODS: Students were asked to write down 2 words that came to mind when they heard the word "disability", before and after a 4-day course in disability

Impact of Medical School-Mandated Step 2 Deadlines on Student Well‑Being and Match Outcomes: A Medical Student's Perspective.

Because the US Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 (Step 1) has transitioned to pass/fail scoring, US Medical Licensing Examination Step 2 has emerged as a primary standardized metric in residency selection. In response, many medical schools have implemented hard deadlines for Step 2 completion before Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) submission. Although intended to streamline the application process and ensure timely examination completion, such mandates may unintentionally heighten student stress, jeopardize academic performance, and impair Match outcomes. This perspective of

Defining the student perspective on radiation oncology-an analysis of factors influencing medical students' decisions for specialized training.

PURPOSE: The new Medical Licensing Regulations 2025 in Germany demand a longitudinal and interdisciplinary oncological curriculum for the future of medical education. Small disciplines like radiation oncology (RO) tend to be underrepresented in the general curriculum, which complicates attracting new residents and doctoral candidates to the field. To bridge this gap, our university successfully implemented a multidisciplinary training for preclinical semesters combining anatomical and RO knowledge. The following study addresses students' perceptions of RO and learning success in the setting of

HIV molecular transmission networks among students in Guangxi: unraveling the dynamics of student-driven HIV epidemic.

In Guangxi, the number of newly diagnosed HIV-1 infections among students is continuously increasing, highlighting the need for a detailed understanding of local transmission dynamics, particularly focusing on key drivers of transmission. We recruited individuals newly diagnosed with HIV-1 in Nanning, Guangxi, and amplified and sequenced the HIV-1 pol gene to construct a molecular network. Bayesian phylogenetic analysis was utilized to identify migration events, and multivariable logistic regression was employed to analyze factors influencing clustering and high linkage. The predominant subtyp

Redefining the term "Disadvantaged student": A post baccalaureate program's role in underrepresented students' success and reclaiming of narratives.

PURPOSE: Racial/ethnic minority groups and low-income students continue to be underrepresented in medicine (URiM) despite years of diversity and inclusion efforts. Post baccalaureate programs (PBP) are shown to prepare underrepresented students to successfully matriculate to medical school. However, identification of the aspects of a PBP that are key to future success in medicine from the student perspective is lacking. Therefore, this study was designed to answer the question, "What aspects of a post baccalaureate program do URiM students see as valuable to their future success?" METHODS: Th

Improved processing workflow and student transparency with student mistreatment reports leads to graduation questionnaire data gains.

Mistreatment of students has been historically documented as common in U.S. medical schools, but graduate questionnaire (GQ) data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) displays high numbers of students who have experienced mistreatment but not reported the incident. There are many reasons within the literature as to why students do not report their experiences, including fear of academic repercussion or a misunderstanding of what constitutes as mistreatment. Our institution found through GQ data that there was a shortcoming in understanding policies and knowledge of procedur

Identifying Drivers and Barriers to Precepting Midwifery Students: "A Little Part of Me Lives on in Each Student Midwife".

INTRODUCTION: Increased access to midwifery care is one strategy that could improve perinatal health outcomes and help address the maternal health crisis in the United States. A modifiable barrier to increasing the workforce is greater access to midwifery preceptors for clinical training. The objective of this research is to use the socioecological framework to identify midwives' perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to precepting students in clinical areas. METHODS: Midwives attending a preceptor education and training workshop series responded to 3 different questions at the end of e

Decreasing reproductive and abortion care barriers: findings on the student health center's role from a student survey.

BACKGROUND: College-aged young adults in the US have low utilization and high need for reproductive healthcare. Multiple barriers to reproductive care exist. University Student Health Centers (SHCs) provide varying degrees of reproductive products and services. Recently, California legislated that public university SHCs add medication abortion to their care. METHODS: To examine existing attitudes and barriers to reproductive healthcare for public university students, we conducted an anonymous online survey at a large, diverse, urban coastal California State University. Students were asked abo
