Painless Giant Submandibular Gland Sialolith: A Case Report.

Sialolithiasis is one of the most common diseases involving the salivary glands. It is a condition that occurs due to an obstruction in a salivary gland or its duct due to a calculus. The formation of a salivary stone is believed to be secondary to the deposition of mineral salts around a nidus, which is frequently associated with a recurrent bacterial infection. Patients with submandibular sialolithiasis usually present with acute swelling over the neck associated with pain, fever, and purulent intraoral discharge. The size of the calculus varies from <1 mm to a few centimeters. The frequency

Synchronous Parotid and Homolateral Submandibular Gland Pleomorphic Adenoma.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenomas are benign neoplasms of salivary glands. The simultaneous homolateral occurrence of these tumors in salivary glands is exceedingly rare. CASE REPORT: An adult female presenting to our OPD with the swelling of right-sided preauricular and submandibular regions was diagnosed with the pleomorphic adenoma based on fine needle aspiration cytology. The patient was subjected to the excision of both swellings under general anesthesia. Postoperative facial nerve functions were within normal limits and final histopathology confirmed pleomorphic adenoma involving both

A case of primary submandibular gland oncocytic carcinoma.

Primary submandibular gland oncocytic carcinoma is a rare pathology, with only 10 cases being reported to date. We encountered a case of primary submandibular gland oncocytic carcinoma and report it herein. The patient was a 69-year-old man who came to our hospital with right submandibular cancer as the main complaint. Based on the results of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, submandibular gland tumor was diagnosed. Preoperative cytodiagnosis suggested class III oncocytic carcinoma. Resection of the right submandibular tumor was performed along with right neck dissection. Pos

Schwannomatosis presenting as pancreatic and submandibular gland schwannoma.

Schwannomatosis is a well-established third form of neurofibromatosis, characterized by the presence of multiple non-vestibular, non-intradermal schwannomas, often associated with chronic pain. Herein, we report a 41-year-old man with a history of paternal neurofibromatosis 1, who presented with partially cystic tumors in the pancreas and in the right submandibular gland. Besides, he complained of neuropathic pain in the right inguinal and suprapubic area. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed multiple intradural-extramedullary tumors at the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal canal, suggestive

Algorithm changes in treatment of submandibular gland sialolithiasis.

Our research was conducted to determine the algorithm changes during the treatment of submandibular sialolithiasis. Two time periods were compared between 2004-2008 and 2009-2012. The turning point was December 2008, when sialendoscopy procedure was introduced. In the first period, 48 patients were treated: 31 outpatient duct incisions with stone evacuation and 17 surgical excision of submandibular gland. In the second period, 207 sialendoscopy procedures were performed on 197 patients. Out of this particular group, 158 patients were diagnosed with pathological obstruction of salivary glands a

Hamartomatous sialolipoma of the submandibular gland: case report.

Sialolipoma is a rare tumour of the salivary gland that is composed of mature adipocytes and normal salivary gland tissue. We report an unusual case of a sialolipoma of the submandibular gland in a 77-year-old woman. The location of this tumour has not to our knowledge been previously described. The tumour was excised and has not recurred during 22 months postoperatively.

Phenylephrine protects autotransplanted rabbit submandibular gland from apoptosis.

Submandibular gland (SMG) autotransplantation is an effective treatment for severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Our previous studies have shown that phenylephrine attenuates structural injury and promotes cell proliferation in autotransplanted rabbit SMG. However, the mechanism by which phenylephrine reduces the injury has not been fully evaluated. In this study, we investigate the ability of phenylephrine to inhibit apoptosis in autotransplanted rabbit SMG. We observed that apoptosis occurred in the early phase of SMG transplantation and that phenylephrine treatment protected transplanted SMG

Label-retaining cells in the rat submandibular gland.

To identify stem cells in salivary glands, label-retaining cells (LRCs) were established in rat submandibular glands. Developing and regenerating glands were labeled with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). To cause gland regeneration, the glands were injured by duct obstruction. BrdU LRCs were observed in all the parenchymal structures except for the acinus of the glands labeled during regeneration. Among these LRCs, a few, but not many, expressed neither keratin18 (K18; an acinar/duct cell marker) nor alpha-smooth muscle actin (alphaSMA; a myoepithelial cell marker), and thus were putative stem cells.

Upfront submandibular salivary gland transfer in pharyngeal cancers.

Head and neck irradiation results in salivary dysfunction and subsequent xerostomia. Twenty two patients with squamous cancer of oropharynx or hypopharynx underwent contralateral submandibular salivary gland transfer (SMSGT) to submental triangle to shield it from subsequent radiotherapy. Resting salivary outputs of transferred and untransferred gland (control) were measured before and after SMSGT and following radiotherapy, by cannulating individual submandibular duct. They were compared by paired samples t-test. Following radiation therapy transferred gland retained 73% and untransferred gla

A study of 55 submandibular salivary gland excisions.

This study examines 55 cases involving patients who underwent submandibular gland excision. Their preoperative diagnostic examinations, postoperative complications, and glandular pathology are discussed. Sialolithiasis was the main histopathological finding, followed by chronic sialadenitis. Temporary paresis of the mandibular branch of the facial nerve was the most common postoperative complication. Removing the submandibular salivary gland may be followed by a number of complications, most of which can be avoided if the appropriate surgical technique is applied.

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma expleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular gland.

We described a rare case of carcinoma expleomorphic adenoma in which mucoepidermoid carcinoma arise from a previous incompletely excised pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular gland. The tumor was surgically resected along with a modified radical neck dissection and postoperative radiotherapy. The patient remained disease free 3 years after the last operation. The pathology showed concurrent presence of Warthin's tumor in the specimen. The concurrent presence of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, pleomorphic adenoma, and synchronous Warthin's tumor make this case unique, and such a combination associ

Submandibular salivary gland transfer prevents radiation-induced xerostomia.

BACKGROUND: Xerostomia is a significant morbidity of radiation therapy in the management of head and neck cancers. We hypothesized that the surgical transfer of one submandibular salivary gland to submental space, outside the proposed radiation field, prior to starting radiation treatment, would prevent xerostomia. METHODS: We are conducting a prospective clinical trial where the submandibular gland is transferred as part of the surgical intervention. The patients are followed clinically, with salivary flow studies and University of Washington quality of life questionnaire. RESULTS: We repor

Expression of phosphodiesterase 3 in rat submandibular gland.

The expression of phosphodiesterase (PDE) 3 isoforms was investigated in extracts of rat submandibular gland by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and the PCR fragments were then sequenced. PDE3 activity was detected in gland homogenates; about 90% of the activity was in the supernatant fraction and about 10% in the particulate fraction. PDE3A and 3B mRNA was detected by RT-PCR in RNA from the gland. The nucleotide sequences of the fragments were identical to those of rat PDE3A and 3B. The results indicate that two PDE3 isoforms are present in rat submandibular gland and
