Intraoperative Visualization of Subretinal Injection and Retinal Detachment in Rats.

Subretinal injection, the delivery of a solution between the photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), creates a subretinal space where components are in direct contact with photoreceptors and RPE cells. This delivery method allows for targeted treatment of these cells. Therapeutics for subretinal injection have been developed and approved, particularly for inherited retinal diseases. In animals, subretinal injection procedures can be challenging due to the lens size, especially in rodents. This article describes methods for subretinal injection in rats, enabling intraoperative

Intravitreal bevacizumab (avastin) for circumscribed choroidal hemangioma.

Circumscribed choroidal hemangiomas are rare ophthalmic entities that cause diminution in vision due to accumulation of subretinal and/or intraretinal fluid in the macular area. Various treatment options ranging from conventional laser to photodynamic therapy have been employed to destroy the tumor and reduce the exudation; however, either the inability to penetrate through the exudative fluid or the collateral retinal damage induced by these treatment modalities make them unsuitable for lesions within the macula. We evaluated the role of intravitreal bevacizumab, a pan-vascular endothelial gr

[Choroidal vascular lesions in serous retinal detachment viewed with indocyanine green angiography].

In serous retinal detachment due to damaged retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), fluorescein angiography shows dye leakage into the subretinal space from the choroid. We performed indocyanine green (ICG) angiography in 110 eyes with serous retinal detachment comprising 71 eyes with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), 19 with bullous retinal detachment, 18 with Harada's disease, and 2 with toxemia of pregnancy. Choroidal tissue staining was present around the site of subretinal leakage in late-phase ICG angiograms from 63 eyes with CSC and 18 with bullous retinal detachment. ICG angiography al

Coloboma of optic nerve associated with serous maculopathy. A clinicopathologic correlative study.

A rhesus monkey with a congenital coloboma of the optic nerve head associated with serous macular detachment underwent intravenous (IV), intrathecal, and retrobulbar fluorescein angiography. No fluorescein leaked beneath the serous detachment after IV or intrathecal injection, although the retrobulbar injection caused a bolus to extravasate from the margin of the optic nerve coloboma, drifting toward the macular region temporally. Histopathologically, glial tissue replaced optic nerve axonal bundles in the temporal coloboma. The intermediary tissue of Kuhnt was disrupted, and fluid from the re

OCT-3 study of serous retinal detachment in a preeclamptic patient.

We report optical coherence tomography-3 (OCT-3) of retinal disorders in acute preeclampsia. A 33-year-old woman developed mind hypertension (170/90 mm Hg) and proteinuria in the 28th week of pregnancy. The patient complained of sudden and severe visual acuity decrease. Fundus exam showed bilateral serous retinal detachment at the macula area. OCT-3 exam demonstrated subretinal and intraretinal fluid. Bilateral serous retinal detachment is an unusual finding of preeclampsia of unknown aetiology. Intense arteriolar vasospasm has been implicated in the pathogenesis of the serous retinal detachme

Atypical Haemorrhagic Presentation of Neuro-Retinitis and Serous Retinal Detachment Secondary to Cat-Scratch Disease.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is a self-limited disease caused by Bartonella henselae, a fastidious gram-negative intracellular bacillus bacterium. Neuroretinitis, a form of optic neuropathy characterised clinically by optic disc swelling and a macular star, is an uncommon manifestation of CSD occurring in approximately 1-2% of cases. We report a case of a 14-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with a chief complaint of acute painless vision loss described as a large black spot in the centre of her right eye vision 2 weeks after being scratched by cats. Fundus examination rev

Exudative retinal detachment.

Exudative retinal detachment develops when fluid collects in the subretinal space. The subretinal space between the photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelium is the remnant of the embryonic optic vesicle. In the developed eye the subretinal space is of minimal size, but it can reopen under pathological conditions that disrupt the integrity of blood-retinal barrier. Inflammatory, infectious, infiltrative, neoplastic, vascular, and degenerative conditions may be associated with blood-retinal barrier breakdown and the sequential development of exudative retinal detachment. We elaborate on

Management of traumatic hemorrhagic retinal detachment with pars plana vitrectomy.

Traumatic hemorrhagic retinal detachment may prevent successful visual rehabilitation of eyes with severe posterior segment injury. We managed 19 consecutive cases of traumatic hemorrhagic retinal detachment with pars plana vitrectomy, scleral buckling, and fluid-gas exchange, with or without internal drainage of subretinal hemorrhage. We based our approach on the amount of subretinal hemorrhage present and the location of associated retinal breaks. Internal drainage of subretinal hemorrhage was performed in 16 eyes to allow adequate retinopexy to hemorrhagically elevated retinal breaks (9 eye

Applications of a cannulated extrusion needle during vitreoretinal microsurgery.

A specially designed cannulated extrusion needle facilitates the internal drainage of subretinal fluid during vitreoretinal microsurgery. Case histories demonstrate the use of this instrument in the management of complex retinal detachments including eyes with preretinal and subretinal hemorrhage, proliferative vitreoretinopathy with open peripheral retinal breaks, retinal detachment with giant retinal tear, and combined traction-rhegmatogenous detachments due to diabetic retinopathy. This method of internal drainage appears to have specific advantages over standard techniques by allowing the
