BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a life-threatening genetic disorder due to the formation of sickle hemoglobin molecule (HbS) that polymerizes in hypoxic conditions leading to SCD-related complications. Different approaches have been used in the management of SCD including symptomatic management, supportive management, and preventive management.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the management of SCD in pediatric patients in Gaafar Ibnauf Referral Hospital in Khartoum locality, Sudan.
METHOD: A descriptive, retrospective, hospital-based study was conducted in Gaafar Ibnauf Hospital using a data

The Sudan ebolavirus (SUDV) outbreak highlights our ongoing vulnerability to re-emerging high-consequence infectious diseases. Although the Minister of health in Uganda has initiated public health measures in collaboration with neighbouring countries and with support of the WHO, cases have continued to spread to several regions including the capital. The ongoing transmission, uncertain case numbers and no licensed vaccine or therapeutics available are a cause for concern. We searched four databases for SUDV research using the search terms "SUDV", "Sudan Virus" and "Ebola Sudan". Our analysis i

Programs for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) such as sleeping sickness increasingly involve patients and community workers in syndromic case detection with little exploration of patient understandings of symptoms. Drawing on concepts from sensorial anthropology, I investigate peoples' experiences of sleeping sickness in South Sudan. People here sense the disease through discourses about four symptoms (pain, sleepiness, confusion and hunger) using biomedical and ethnophysiological concepts and sensations of risk in the post-conflict environment. When identified together, the symptoms interlo

Background. Youth populations are vulnerable to substance use particularly in developing countries where circumstances may be favorable for it. There is no published data on substance use among the youth in Sudan other than on tobacco use. Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence, circumstances, and factors associated with substance use. Methods. An institution-based survey was conducted on a sample of 500 students. Data was collected using a questionnaire designed by the WHO for student drug surveys and analyzed using IBM SPSS version 20. Results. The overall preval

Many neglected tropical diseases, including the zoonotic disease cystic echinococcosis (hydatidosis), are endemic to East Africa. However, their geographical distribution is heterogenous and incompletely characterized. The aim of this study was to determine if Mundari pastoralists harbor endemic human hydatidosis. The survey was conducted in cattle camps randomly selected from accessible sites provided by officials in Terekeka, South Sudan. Following informed consent, a questionnaire collected demographic data and hydatid exposure risk. A systematic sonographic abdominal exam was performed usi

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and to identify risk factors for live singleton preterm birth in Omdurman Maternity hospital, Sudan.
METHODS: Case-control study. Odds ratios were adjusted for the confounding factors using multiple logistic regression models.
RESULTS: Among 3240 live birth at maternity hospital during the 3 months period of the study, 126 (3.8%) were a live preterm birth. About 99 live preterm births at a mean (SD) of 32.7 (2.2) gestational weeks were included in the final analyses. About 80 (81.0%) of these 99 preterm births were spontaneous preterm births and the r

Acanthamoeba is a free-living protozoan widely distributed in soil, water, and air. It can cause corneal infection (keratitis) in man, and may lead to blindness of the affected eye in 15% of untreated cases. The main risk factors are eye trauma and contact lens wearing. Early presentation of Acanthamoeba keratitis patients usually includes ocular pain, photophobia, and a unilateral red eye. The story of a female Sudanese housewife who suffered a blind left eye due to Acanthamoeba is described in this report.

INTRODUCTION: Bleeding due to oesophageal varices is the commonest cause of upper gastrointestinal tract haemorrhage in Sudan. Endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EST) is a valuable therapeutic modality for the management of variceal bleeding. Other options for treatment such as variceal banding are either expensive or unavailable.
STUDY AIMS: A retrospective study to evaluate the outcome of EST in the management of bleeding oesophageal varices due to portal hypertension in a developing country (Sudan).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 1070 patients over a period of 10 years (1986-1996) were

Onchocerciasis in Sudan exists in three distinct foci which exhibit differing clinical presentations. Previous studies have demonstrated that a tandemly repeated Onchocerca sequence family with a unit repeat length of 150 bp (the O-150 family) is a useful marker for deducing relationships among different O. volvulus populations. In the current study, the O-150 repeat families of O. volvulus from Sudan were analyzed and compared to each other and to those of parasites from West Africa. Similar to West African and American O. volvulus, the O-150 families of the Sudanese parasites could be divide

Sudan began poliomyelitis and dracunculiasis eradication activities in 1994 and 1995, respectively, in response to resolutions by the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO). Sudan poses special obstacles to global eradication campaigns as a result of the disruption caused by ongoing civil war in the vast southern part of the country. The activities of both programs are summarized in this report, which indicated that substantial progress was made to eradicate polio and control of dracunculiasis improved slightly. Continued commitment of resources, access to persons in area

In this clinical study the presentation, electromyography and nerve conduction studies were described in different types of motor neurone disease in 28 Sudanese patients seen at El Shaab and Khartoum Teaching Hospitals. The three major clinical subtypes encountered were amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (n = 19), progressive bulbar palsy (n = 7) and progressive muscular atrophy (n = 2). Family history of the disease was found in four patients and those mainly presented with bulbar symptoms. Sudanese patients were found to have an earlier age of onset and a better prognosis of the disease than thei

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal sepsis, a clinical syndrome characterized by systemic signs of infection in newborn infants (< 28 days old), are a significant cause of neonatal mortality and long-term morbidity globally, particularly in low- and middle- income countries.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the first case of neonatal sepsis caused by Macrococcus caseolyticus in a 48-hours old newborn who attended to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Kassala Specialized Hospital for Pediatrics in Sudan, with signs of severe bacterial infection. M. caseolyticus is an opportunistic pathogen normally associate

Sudan faces inter-sectional health risks posed by escalating violent conflict, natural hazards and epidemics. Epidemics are frequent and overlapping, particularly resurgent seasonal outbreaks of diseases such as malaria, cholera. To improve response, the Sudanese Ministry of Health manages multiple disease surveillance systems, however, these systems are fragmented, under resourced, and disconnected from epidemic response efforts. Inversely, civic and informal community-led systems have often organically led outbreak responses, despite having limited access to data and resources from formal ou
