A Comparison of Supine and Lateral Decubitus Positions for Hip Arthroscopy: A Systematic Review of Outcomes and Complications.

PURPOSE: This systematic review examines outcomes and risk profiles of the hip arthroscopy in the supine versus lateral decubitus positions to elucidate any superiority of one approach over the other. METHODS: Three databases (Embase, PubMed, and Medline) were searched for studies that addressed hip arthroscopy performed in either position, and were subsequently screened by two reviewers with data abstracted in duplicate. RESULTS: Similar outcomes were observed. Supine studies showed a greater mean postoperative improvement for modified Harris hip score (33.74), visual analog scale (-3.99),

A dosimetric comparison between the supine and prone positions for three-field intact breast radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Supine tangential radiotherapy for the intact breast is a standard component of breast conservation management; a supraclavicular (SCV) field can be added for patients at high risk for nodal failure. Treatment in the prone position has demonstrated improvements in lung sparing, but has been limited to early-stage patients in whom radiation to only the breast was indicated. We sought to investigate the dosimetric feasibility of treating women in the prone position, using a 3-field monoisocentric technique. METHODS: A total of 10 patients previously simulated supine and prone were sele

Acetabular anteversion with CT in supine, simulated standing, and sitting positions in a THA patient population.

BACKGROUND: Appraisal of the orientation of implants in THA dislocations currently is based on imaging done with the patient in the supine position. However, dislocation occurs in standing or sitting positions. Whether measured anteversion differs in images projected in the position of dislocation is unclear. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We compared measured acetabular cup orientations on axial CT scans taken with the patient in a supine position with those from CT sections at angles to the sacral slope reflecting standing and sitting positions. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the radiographs of

Positional MRI changes in supine versus sitting postures in patients with degenerative lumbar spine.

INTRODUCTION: Back pain is associated with a degree of alteration in the alignment and movement of the lumbar spine. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the degree of lumbar segmental degeneration affects sagittal changes in the lumbar spine as it shifts from the supine to the sitting (load-bearing) posture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty patients with chronic low back pain were enrolled (14 male and 16 female patients); mean age 44.5 years. Their lumbar spines were initially investigated by conventional supine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) followed later by positional MRI in th

Comparison of CT myelography performed in the prone and supine positions in the detection of cervical spinal stenosis.

AIM: To quantify the change in the cross-sectional area of the cervical spinal cord and subarachnoid space (SAS) in the supine neutral vs prone extension positions in patients with myelopathy undergoing cervical CT myelography. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Axial CT myelgrams of 21 myelopathic patients were performed in both the supine neutral and prone extension positions. The SAS and cord cross-sectional areas were then measured at the disk spaces and mid-pedicle levels from C2 to T1 in both the supine and prone positions using a public domain NIH Image program, version 156b18. Effect of prone versus supine patient positioning on pelvic magnetic resonance image quality.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the pelvis in the prone position has been proposed as a means of reducing motion-related image blurring. The authors performed a randomized controlled trial to determine if patient positioning affects image quality. METHODS: All women undergoing pelvic MRI during a 7-month period, who could lie both prone and supine, were randomized to the supine or prone position. The quality of axial T2-weighted spin-echo images was rated by two radiologists using a 1-to-4 scale (1 = marked blurring to 4 = sharp definition of pelvic structures).

"Pseudo-Spleen Sign" on Gastric Ultrasound in the Supine Position: A Case Report of a Patient With Delayed Gastric Emptying.

Gastric ultrasound (GUS) plays a key role in identifying delayed gastric emptying and preventing pulmonary aspiration. Conventional GUS estimates gastric volume by measuring the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the antrum in the right lateral decubitus (RLD) position, which is often impractical in respiratory-unstable patients. We report an adult patient in whom GUS in the supine position successfully identified a distended gastric fundus filled with enteral nutrition (EN). In this patient, GUS in the RLD position was not feasible due to a respiratory condition. However, a daily supine abdominal

Adolescents on psychotropic treatment displayed longer corrected QT intervals than unmedicated controls when they rose rapidly from the supine position.

AIM: Psychotropic medication can contribute to arrhythmia and identifying individuals at risk is crucial. This Swedish study compared the corrected QT (QTc) intervals of adolescents on psychotropic medication with unmedicated controls, when supine and after rising rapidly. METHODS: The study was carried out at Östersund County Hospital in March 2022 and February to March 2023. It comprised 16 cases, aged 10-17 years and 28 controls. QTc intervals were measured with electrocardiography and calculated using Bazett's and Fridericia's formulas. Univariate and multiple linear regressions were used

Efficacy of combined canalith-repositioning procedure and supine to prolonged lateral position in treating posterior canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

OBJECTIVES: Posterior benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (p-BPPV) is the most common type of BPPV, and canalith-repositioning procedure (CRP) is frequently applied for treatment. Supine to prolonged lateral position (SPLP), a simple home-based maneuver, can be performed for treatment of p-BPPV. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether combination of CRP and SPLP could be more effective in symptom alleviation compared with CRP alone and reduce times of repeated CRP for patients with p-BBPV. METHODS: A retrospective chart review enrolled 96 patients diagnosed with primary p-BPPV.

Impact of patient position on esophageal motility disorders using high-resolution esophageal manometry with impedance (HREMI): supine versus upright swallows.

BACKGROUND: High-resolution esophageal manometry with impedance (HREMI) performed with supine patient positioning is used to evaluate patients for esophageal dysmotility. However, most patients experience symptoms related to esophageal dysmotility when eating or drinking upright. The aims of this study are to: (1) compare HREMI metrics in supine versus upright position; and (2) determine if upright position alters motility characterization of patients. METHODS: HREMI of twelve wet swallows in supine position and five wet swallows in upright position were performed on normal subjects (NS) and

A three minutes supine position test reveals higher risk of spinal anesthesia induced hypotension during cesarean delivery. An observational study.

Background: Cesarean delivery is performed under spinal anesthesia, and vasodilation is the main cause for a drop in blood pressure. The compression of the aorta and inferior vena cava by the gravid uterus is of additional clinical importance. Hypotension may occur during cesarean delivery even if prophylactic infusion of phenylephrine is practiced. We have tested if a 3 minute supine observation, can identify a subset of women with decreasing systolic arterial pressure (SAP) under spinal anesthesia. Methods: We performed a prospective observational study at Oslo University Hospital on healthy

Inhibition of SA Node at Supine Position in Right Atrial Thrombus Complicating Behçet's Disease - From Cardiac Surgical Point of View.

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic multi-systemic disease of unknown cause. Intra-cardiac thrombus (ICT) complicating BD is extremely rare. In general, cardiac manifestations in BD are associated with poor prognosis. Chest computed tomography (CT) scan and echocardiogram are excellent modalities for diagnosis and patient assessment. Cardiac surgical intervention can be done safely using an on-pump technique when medical management has failed. CASE REPORT: We report on a case of a 27-year-old Jordanian woman diagnosed with BD who presented with dyspnea, cough, and hemoptysis, with

What is a Suitable Pressure for the Abdominal Drawing-in Maneuver in the Supine Position Using a Pressure Biofeedback Unit?

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to determine the appropriate pressure variation for performing a successful abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM). The abdominal muscle thickness variations and contraction ratios were examined in relation to pressure variations using a Pressure Biofeedback Unit (PBU) during an ADIM in the supine position. [Methods] The PBU was placed identically between the lumbar lordosis of 20 healthy subjects (12 males and 8 females) and the pressure of the PBU was maintained at 40 mmHg. Then, while the subjects performed ADIM at four random pressure variations (0, 2, 4,

Utility of bronchial blocker placement in the lateral versus supine position for thoracoscopic surgery: a randomised controlled trial in China.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial blocker (BB) displacement after supine placement and subsequent patient repositioning remains a significant challenge during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). We aimed to test the hypothesis that placing the BB in the lateral decubitus position after standard supine tracheal intubation would reduce the incidence of malposition compared to conventional supine placement. METHODS: In this single-centre, prospective, randomised, single-blind, controlled trial conducted in China, 120 adult patients scheduled for VATS requiring one-lung ventilation were randomly ass

Postoperative elevated bed header position versus supine in the management of chronic subdural hematoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a prevalent type of intracranial hemorrhage. Surgical interventions, such as Twist Drill Craniostomy and Burr Hole Craniostomy, are employed for its treatment. However, limited information exists regarding the impact of postoperative head position (supine vs. elevated) on clinical outcomes. We aim to assess whether patients' head position after surgery influences their prognosis. METHOD: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis. Our search encompassed PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databas

Relation between sagittal pelvic and thoracolumbar parameters in supine position - Pelvic parameters and their predictive value for spinal Cobb angles.

INTRODUCTION: Predicting the pre-morbid sagittal profile of the spine or segmental angles could enhance the process of planning the extent of fracture reduction. There is evidence that spinopelvic parameters may be suitable for this purpose. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is it possible to determine the inflection point and the mono- and bi-segmental endplate angles (EPA) in the thoracolumbar transition (from Th9 to L2) based on age, gender, spinopelvic parameters, and the adjacent EPA in the supine position? MATERIAL AND METHODS: Based on Polytrauma CT scans in the supine position, the following spinop

A Supine Position and Dual-Dose Applications Enhance Spray Dosing to the Posterior Nose: Paving the Way for Mucosal Immunization.

Delivering vaccines to the posterior nose has been proposed to induce mucosal immunization. However, conventional nasal devices often fail to deliver sufficient doses to the posterior nose. This study aimed to develop a new delivery protocol that can effectively deliver sprays to the caudal turbinate and nasopharynx. High-speed imaging was used to characterize the nasal spray plumes. Three-dimensional-printed transparent nasal casts were used to visualize the spray deposition within the nasal airway, as well as the subsequent liquid film formation and translocation. Influencing variables consi

Why upright standing men urinate more efficiently than in supine position: A morphological analysis with real-time magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: Few studies have examined the effects of body position on urination efficiency morphologically. We aimed to dissect out the anatomical changes of pelvic organs during urination in the upright and supine positions by a real-time magnetic resonance imaging (rtMRI) system. METHODS: Thirteen healthy male volunteers aged 26-60 years were included in the study. The sagittal real-time two-dimensional images were taken to evaluate urinary efficiency, along with change in six morphological indices at the time of storage and the beginning of voiding, in both upright ant supine positions.
