Evaluation of Time-Dependent Chemical Alterations in Sodium Hypochlorite Solution Kept on the Unit Tray During an Average Root Canal Treatment Period.

BACKGROUND Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is the most commonly used irrigant in root canal treatment because of its antimicrobial activity and tissue-dissolving capacity. Since these properties are related to its physicochemical characteristics, changes during chairside handling may be clinically relevant. This study aimed to evaluate time-dependent changes in pH, active chlorine content, and surface tension of NaOCl kept in transparent, open-lid containers during a typical chairside root canal treatment period. MATERIAL AND METHODS A commercially available 5% NaOCl solution was tested under 3 co

Use of the drop volume of amniotic fluid in estimating the risk for respiratory distress syndrome in the newborn infant.

The present study describes the testing and function of the drop-volume method in the analysis of fetal lung maturity with use of amniotic fluid. Elevated surface tension resulting from a lack of surface-active phospholipids (surfactant) is the primary etiologic defect in the development of respiratory distress syndrome. The drop-volume method quantifies the surface tension of amniotic fluid with use of the fact that the volume of a falling drop of liquid is proportional to the quantity of surfactant in the solution. The drop-volume method requires only 2 minutes and 2 ml of amniotic fluid and

New In Situ Amphipathic Polymerization-Modified Titanium Quantum Dots: Application as a High-Performance Water-Lock-Breaking Agent in Tight Gas Reservoirs.

In this paper, to remove the water lock effect in tight gas reservoirs, amphipathic polymer-modified titanium quantum dots (PTQs) were synthesized via in situ polymerization, showing a hyper-branched structure and an excellent synergistic effect with the nonionic fluorocarbon surfactant to break the water lock. The molecular structure, fluorescent property, and micromorphology of the PTQs were obtained. The surface activity and wettability alteration of rock are discussed. Results show that PTQs have zwitterionic hydrophilic groups and the hydrophobic structure of long-chain groups on their mo

Periodic marangoni instability in surfactant (CTAB) liquid/liquid mass transfer.

Periodic Marangoni convective instability has been observed in a biphasic system during the mass transfer of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) from an aqueous to a dichloromethane organic phase. Visualization of the convective fluxes was possible thanks to the CTAB crystals that are formed in the aqueous phase at a temperature below the Krafft point. Surface tension and electrical potential oscillations have been shown to be correlated with the fluid motion. Surface tension measurements, representative of the adsorption state, showed fast adsorption during the convective stage, followed by

Surfactant displacement by meconium free fatty acids: an alternative explanation for atelectasis in meconium aspiration syndrome.

Meconium, an ether extract of meconium, and the major free fatty acids of meconium (palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids) were all found to increase the surface tension minimum of dog lung extract in a Wilhelmy balance. Each of these fractions was instilled into the lungs of dogs (15 experimental, eight saline solution controls), and cardiac output, venous and arterial blood gases, pulmonary, atrial, and systemic pressures, airway pressure, and static lung compliance were serially monitored for 2 hours. Mean airway pressure increased and static lung compliance decreased significantly in all of t

Biochemical and biophysical investigation of surfactant in neonatal gastric aspirate at birth.

BACKGROUND: The optimal approach to detection of surfactant deficiency in the prematurely born infants at birth remains unclear and the decision to apply exogenous surfactant is based mainly on the development of clinical and radiological signs of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS). OBJECTIVES: We studied the biochemical and biophysical properties of gastric aspirates (GA) from prematurely born infants with NRDS and healthy full term infants with an aim to find an approachable method for assessment of surfactant maturity at birth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-seven newborn infants

Comparative Biophysical and Surface Property Analysis of Healthy and Osteoarthritic Chondrocytes.

Chondrocytes are a primary cell type used in articular cartilage tissue engineering due to their ability to be applied autologously, minimizing the risk of immune rejection. However, isolated chondrocytes often exhibit heterogeneity, including mixtures of viable, dead, and dedifferentiated cells, which may impact their functional properties. In this study, the hydrophobicity and surface tension components of chondrocytes isolated from healthy and osteoarthritis (OA) donors were explored using a drop shape analyzer and Young's-Dupré equation over a 21 day culture period. The results indicate th

Effect of high-pressure homogenization on the foaming properties of cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) protein isolate.

The growing demand for sustainable protein sources has increased interest in plant proteins with suitable techno-functional properties for aerated food systems. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp) stands out due to its high protein content and socioeconomic relevance in Brazil, although structural limitations may impair its foaming performance. This study evaluated the effect of high-pressure homogenization (HPH; 60, 100 and 140 MPa; 1-3 cycles) on the physicochemical, interfacial, physical stability, and foaming properties of cowpea protein isolate. The isolate was obtained by saline extractio

Distinct interactional behaviour of an ecofriendly cleavable gemini surfactant with myoglobin: physicochemical and spectroscopic study.

Protein-surfactant interactions are substantial to industrial and cosmetic compilations. In this regard, we have studied the interaction of cleavable gemini surfactant (C16-C4O2-C16) with the myoglobin (Mb), utilizing physicochemical and spectroscopic approach. The results obtained were quite intriguing. Tensiometry has shown that pure C16-C4O2-C16 bear lower surface tension (γ) and CMC values than mixed systems (C16-C4O2-C16 + Mb). Intrinsic fluorescence results showed enhancement in the fluorescence intensity upon cleavable gemini binding. UV results depict visible fluctuations in the peaks

Pulmonary surfactant.

The mammalian lung is stabilized by a specialized material, the pulmonary surfactant, which acts by reversibly reducing the surface tension at the air-liquid interface of the lung during breathing. Pulmonary surfactant contains approximately 90% lipid and 10% proteins. Dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine, the major lipid component, appears to be primarily responsible for the ability to reduce surface tension to near 0 dyn/cm (1 dyn = 10 microN). The other components of pulmonary surfactant promote the adsorption and spreading of this disaturated lecithin at the air-liquid interface. Surfactant act

Enzymatic activity of pig heart mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase monomolecular films by surface exchange technique.

A technique for studying the catalytic activity of enzymes spread as a film at an air-water interface, by exchanging the subphase under the film to remove unspread enzyme molecules, was developed, and its effectiveness was studied using surface-spread mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase. Mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase formed stable films which gave reproducible pi-A curves. The enzyme activity was measured by the oxidation rate of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) in the presence of the substrate oxalacetic acid. Oxalacetic acid and NADH were injected into the subphase. The c

The assessment methods of laryngeal muscle activity in muscle tension dysphonia: a review.

The purpose of this paper is to review the methods used for the assessment of muscular tension dysphonia (MTD). The MTD is a functional voice disorder associated with abnormal laryngeal muscle activity. Various assessment methods are available in the literature to evaluate the laryngeal hyperfunction. The case history, laryngoscopy, and palpation are clinical methods for the assessment of patients with MTD. Radiography and surface electromyography (EMG) are objective methods to provide physiological information about MTD. Recent studies show that surface EMG can be an effective tool for assess

A protein from airways of premature lambs that inhibits surfactant function.

A protein that interfered with surfactant function was isolated from the alveolar washes of prematurely delivered and ventilated lambs. This inhibitor was recovered following sequential precipitation with polyethylene glycol, Affi-Gel Blue, and diethylaminoethyl (DEAE) cellulose chromatography as a protein of approximately 110,000 mol wt. Compared to surfactant alone or surfactant and bovine serum albumin, the purified inhibitor increased the time required for surfactant to spread, increased both maximal and minimal surface tensions, increased the percent surface area that had to be compressed

Interactions between plasma proteins and pulmonary surfactant: surface balance studies.

The influence of human fibrinogen, alpha-globulin, and albumin on the properties of monolayers of pulmonary surfactant under dynamic compression and expansion has been studied at 37 degrees C. Each of the proteins altered some of the properties of the normal compression and expansion isotherms of surfactant such that characteristics deemed desirable for proper lung function were impaired. The order of potency of these effects was fibrinogen greater than globulin greater than albumin. The proteins (a) decreased the maximum surface pressure (equivalent to the minimum surface tension) which the s

Inhibition of surfactant activity by Pneumocystis carinii organisms and components in vitro.

This study examines the direct inhibitory effects of Pneumocystis carinii (Pc) organisms and chemical components on the surface activity and composition of whole calf lung surfactant (WLS) and calf lung surfactant extract (CLSE) in vitro. Incubation of WLS suspensions with intact Pc organisms (10(7) per milligram of surfactant phospholipid) did not significantly alter total phospholipid levels or surfactant protein A content. Incubation with intact Pc organisms also did not impair dynamic surface tension lowering in suspensions of WLS or centrifuged large surfactant aggregates on a bubble surf

Explainable advanced modelling of interfacial tension in H2 - CO2 - CH4 - brine systems for sustainable subsurface storage in saline aquifer.

Hydrogen is increasingly recognized as a pillar of future low-carbon energy systems, offering flexibility across multiple sectors and contributing to deep decarbonization goals. To enable large-scale deployment, Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) in geological formations such as saline aquifers is gaining considerable attention as a strategic option for ensuring secure and scalable energy reserves. The safety, efficiency, and operational success of UHS heavily depend on accurately determining interfacial tension (IFT) between hydrogen/cushion gas and the in-situ brine, as this parameter govern

Controlling the size of hot injection made nanocrystals by manipulating the diffusion coefficient of the solute.

We investigate the relation between the chain length of ligands used and the size of the nanocrystals formed in the hot injection synthesis. With two different CdSe nanocrystal syntheses, we consistently find that longer chain carboxylic acids result in smaller nanocrystals with improved size dispersions. By combining a more in-depth experimental investigation with kinetic reaction simulations, we come to the conclusion that this size tuning is due to a change in the diffusion coefficient and the solubility of the solute. The relation between size tuning by the ligand chain length and the coor

Peripheral cell wall lipids of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are inhibitory to surfactant function.

The transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) requires extensive damage to the lungs to facilitate bacterial release into the airways, and it is therefore likely that the microorganism has evolved mechanisms to exacerbate its local pathology. This study examines the inhibitory effects of lipids extracted and purified chromatographically from TB on the surface-active function of lavaged bovine lung surfactant (LS) and a clinically relevant calf lung surfactant extract (CLSE). Total lipids from TB greatly inhibited the surface activity of LS and CLSE on the pulsating bubble surfactometer a
