System biology approach intersecting diet and cell metabolism with pathogenesis of brain disorders.

The surge in meals high in calories has prompted an epidemic of metabolic disorders around the world such that the elevated incidence of obese and diabetic individuals is alarming. New research indicates that metabolic disorders pose a risk for neurological and psychiatric conditions including stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and depression, all of which have a metabolic component. These relationships are rooted to a dysfunctional interaction between molecular processes that regulate energy metabolism and synaptic plasticity. The strong adaptive force of dietary factors on sh

Optimizing Typha biochar with phosphoric acid modification and ferric chloride impregnation for hexavalent chromium remediation in water and soil.

Considering the persistent and covert nature of heavy metal soil contamination, the sustainable development of ecological environments and food safety is at significant risk. Our study focuses on remediating soils contaminated with chromium (Cr); we introduce an advanced remediation material, iron oxide phosphoric acid-loaded activated biochar (HFBC), synthesized through pyrolysis. This HFBC displays greater microporosity, fewer impurities, and enhanced efficiency for the remediation process. Our research utilized a comprehensive set of analytical techniques, including Scanning Electron Micros

Decolorization of Antarctic krill hydrolysate for salt reduction in surimi gel: improvement of taste, gel properties, and flavor profile.

This study developed an efficient decolorization process based on a GA-BP neural network for treating Antarctic krill hydrolysate. It achieved a decolorization rate of 93.31% while effectively preserving functional components such as peptides and amino acids. The decolorized hydrolysate (AKP) was applied as a salt substitute in low-salt surimi. The results demonstrated that AKP significantly altered the amino acid composition, with the level of umami amino acids increasing 5-fold and the content of 5'-GMP surging nearly 15-fold. Electronic tongue and sensory evaluation analysis confirmed that

Developing negative split pacing in endurance athletes: practical guidelines and training models.

Negative split pacing-finishing the second half of a race faster than the first-is a hallmark of elite endurance performance and a key indicator of physiological control, fatigue resistance, and strategic pacing literacy. Rather than being an inherent talent, it represents a trainable skill integrating physiological, cognitive, and behavioral regulation. This mini review synthesizes evidence from performance analyses, physiological studies, and coaching practice to outline how negative split capacity can be systematically developed. We summarize training foundations, mesocycle design, and moni

Adaptive clinical command and operational resilience in maritime mass casualty incidents: A qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Maritime mass casualty incidents (MCIs) present significant operational challenges due to environmental instability, geographic isolation, and delayed sea-to-shore evacuation. Despite increasing maritime disaster risks, limited evidence exists on how emergency personnel experience and enact coordinated responses and operational resilience in island settings. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using individual semi-structured interviews with 12 emergency physicians and emergency nurses involved in maritime MCIs coordination in southern Thailand. Data were anal

Disparities in adult critical care resources across Pakistan: findings from a national survey and assessment using a novel scoring system.

BACKGROUND: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, concerted efforts were made by provincial and federal governments to invest in critical care infrastructure and medical equipment to bridge the gap of resource-limitation in intensive care units (ICUs) across Pakistan. An initial step in creating a plan toward strengthening Pakistan's baseline critical care capacity was to carry out a needs-assessment within the country to assess gaps and devise strategies for improving the quality of critical care facilities. METHODS: To assess the baseline critical care capacity of Pakistan, we conducted a s

Anticipating demand for emergency health services due to medication-related adverse events after rapid mass prophylaxis campaigns.

OBJECTIVES: Mass prophylaxis against infectious disease outbreaks carries the risk of medication-related adverse events (MRAEs). The authors sought to define the relationship between the rapidity of mass prophylaxis dispensing and the subsequent demand for emergency health services due to predictable MRAEs. METHODS: The authors created a spreadsheet-based computer model that calculates scenario-specific predicted daily MRAE rates from user inputs by applying a probability distribution to the reported timing of MRAEs. A hypothetical two- to ten-day prophylaxis campaign for one million people u

Immune escape and waning immunity of COVID-19 monovalent mRNA vaccines against symptomatic infection with BA.1/BA.2 and BA.5 in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Repeated emergence of variants with immune escape capacity and waning immunity from vaccination are major concerns for COVID-19. We examined whether the surge in Omicron subvariant BA.5 cases was due to immune escape or waning immunity through vaccine effectiveness (VE) evaluation. METHODS: A test-negative case-control study was conducted in 16 clinics/hospitals during the BA.1/BA.2-dominant and BA.5-dominant periods. VE against symptomatic infection was estimated after adjusting for age, sex, comorbidity, occupation, testing frequency, prior infection, close contact history, clin

The SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein induces microglia senescence-mediated cognitive impairment via Glycolysis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has precipitated a surge in neurocognitive dysfunction, with long-term implications for global health systems and socioeconomic stability. Despite growing clinical recognition of post-COVID cognitive deficits ("brain fog"), the molecular mechanisms driving these impairments remain poorly understood. Our study addresses this critical gap by identifying SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein (SARS-CoV-2 N protein), a core structural component of the virus, as a novel etiological factor in senescence-mediated cognitive decline. We observed that SARS-CoV-2 N protein caused microglia
