Multiple cystic sweat gland tumors in transgenic mice.

Here we describe gross and microscopic sweat gland tumors found in a transgenic mouse model of breast cancer, which had transforming growth factor α under the control of mouse mammary tumor virus promoter (MMTV-TGFα). Initially, 20% of the mice in the colony were affected. Cystic lesions formed on the phalanges, palmar surfaces of the metacarpals, and plantar surfaces of the metatarsals. The lesions were multifocal and nonulcerated with straw-colored fluid, ranging in size from 1 to 30 mm at the largest dimension. The colony was monitored for 6 mo; during that time, the prevalence of lesions i

Surface contamination artificially elevates initial sweat mineral concentrations.

Several sweat mineral element concentrations decline with serial sampling. Possible causes include reduced dermal mineral concentrations or flushing of surface contamination. The purpose of this study was to simultaneously sample mineral concentrations in transdermal fluid (TDF), sweat, and serum during extended exercise-heat stress to determine if these compartments show the same serial changes during repeat sampling. Sixteen heat-acclimated individuals walked on a treadmill (1.56 m/s, 3.0% grade) in a 35°C, 20% relative humidity (RH), 1 m/s wind environment 50 min each hour for 3 h. Mineral

Early-stage mucinous sweat gland adenocarcinoma of eyelid.

We present the findings of an early-stage primary mucinous sweat gland adenocarcinoma in the lower eyelid of a Japanese patient. The patient was a 73-year-old man who had had a nodule on the left lower eyelid for two years. He was referred to our hospital with a diagnosis of a swollen chalazion. The clinical and histopathological records were reviewed and the mass was excised. Histopathological examination revealed a mucinous sweat gland adenocarcinoma. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography excluded systemic metastases. After the histopathological findings,

Rapid desensitization with autologous sweat in cholinergic urticaria.

BACKGROUND: The majority of patients with cholinergic urticaria presents with strong hypersensitivity to autologous sweat. Patients with severe cholinergic urticaria are frequently resistant to H(1) antagonists which are used in conventional therapies for various types of urticaria. It has been reported that desensitization using partially purified sweat antigen was effective in a patient with cholinergic urticaria. METHODS: The aim of this study is to determine the usefulness of rapid desensitization with autologous sweat in severe cholinergic urticaria, because rapid desensitization has pro

Atypical chromhidrosis: a case report of orange sweat.

Chromhidrosis is a rare sweat gland disorder that produces pigmented sweat. The etiology of this disorder often is unknown and the clinical presentation can vary. We describe a previously asymptomatic patient who presented with bronzing of the skin and complained of orange stains on her clothing. The patient's symptoms began after a prophylactic hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy. She is the first reported patient with orange-pigmented sweat in chromhidrosis. She also is the first postmenopausal patient with chromhidrosis.

Botulinum toxin in dermatology - beyond wrinkles and sweat.

Botulinum toxin (BTX) types A and B have been used with success in cosmetic dermatology and hyperhidrosis treatment. The present review focuses on other uses of BTX in dermatology. Discussed in particular are the available data on BTX in inflammatory diseases, proctology, and some other indications. From studies in various types of eczema, it seems that BTX-A not only acts as a potent inhibitor of acetylcholine but also as an inhibitor of substance P and of glutamate as well. By those mechanisms, BTX-A may be antipruritic, which may help explain the benefits of BTX-A in lichen simplex and dysh

Sweat gland carcinoma: an easily confused skin malignancy.

Sweat gland carcinoma is a rare malignancy of the skin appendage. Surgeons and pathologists have limited experience with such tumor. Various classifications and diagnostic identifications lead to easy confusion with other metastatic lesions. Eight cases of sweat gland carcinoma were collected from 1020 cases of primary skin malignancies seen at the Veterans General Hospital-Taipei over the past 20 years. After a careful review of the clinical history and histopathology files, as well as immunohistochemical stains of CEA and S-100 protein, only three cases were proved to be sweat gland carcinom

Evaluation of severe reactions to sweat bee stings.

Thirteen patients with severe reactions to sweat bee stings were evaluated. Eleven patients had had systemic reactions and two, large local reactions. Skin testing and RAST with venom of other Hymenoptera and whole body extract of sweat bees disclosed negative reactions to both skin tests and RAST of all other insects tested in eight, while three showed sensitivity to honey bee. Only one patient had a positive RAST reaction to whole body extract of sweat bee. Whole body extract of sweat bee causes some irritant reaction when skin testing controls and is not a reliable diagnostic agent even tho

Syringoma-like sweat duct proliferation in scalp alopecias.

We have reviewed a series of 585 scalp biopsies taken for histologic evaluation of hair loss and have looked for syringoma-like eccrine sweat duct proliferation. This feature was found in 6 specimens with scarring alopecia and one each with alopecia areata and female-pattern alopecia. Syringoma-like sweat duct proliferation appears to play no role in the etiology of hair loss.

Mucinous eccrine sweat gland adenocarcinoma of the eyelid.

A firm, slow-growing cystic mass of the left upper eyelid developed in a 73-year-old man 5 years after a clinically diagnosed "sebaceous cyst" at the same site had been incised and drained. Histopathological examination disclosed a primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of eccrine sweat gland origin. The patient had no recurrence after 3.5 years of follow-up. Histochemical demonstration of sialomucin differentiates mucinous sweat gland carcinoma from other mucus-secreting adenocarcinomas, such as those arising from lacrimal gland tissue. Enzymatic histochemical analyses or ultrastructural studies are

Sweat gland and pupillary responsiveness in Horner's syndrome.

Eight patients with Horner's syndrome (five with a 1st neuron lesion and three with a 2nd neuron lesion) were examined for their pupillary responses to pharmacologic stimulation with tyramine (2%) and with phenylephrine (1%) eye drops. The same patients were also evaluated for their forehead sweating pattern on stimulation with body heating and pilocarpine injection, using the Evaporimeter. Five patients had a brain stem (1st sympathetic neuron) lesion, while three patients had had a traumatic C8-Th1 root avulsion and hence had a preganglionic neuron lesion. The average response with the pheny

Ceruminoma in association with other sweat gland tumours.

Tumours arising from ceruminous glands of the ear are rare. Two cases of ceruminoma seen in the ENT Department, Ipswich Hospital, during the past three years were both associated with other sweat gland tumours, the first with eccrine spiradenoma in the neck, and the second with multiple cylindromata on the scalp (turban tumour).

Sweat gland carcinoma. Current concepts of surgical management.

In three new cases of sweat gland carcinoma that we observed within recent years, the sites were the axilla, back, and arm. Axillary lymph node dissections were performed in two of the patients and the nodes were normal. Preoperative diagnoses were hydroadenitis, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, and pyogenic granuloma. In one patient who was followed up for four years, there has been no recurrence; the follow-up period for the other two has been short. Sweat gland carcinoma is an uncommon neoplasm that occurs mostly in the older age groups. It may be very slow growing and is extremely diff

Impaired sweating in patients with cholinergic urticaria is linked to low expression of acetylcholine receptor CHRM3 and acetylcholine esterase in sweat glands.

BACKGROUND: Cholinergic urticaria (CholU), a frequent form of chronic inducible urticaria, is characterized by itchy wheals and angioedema in response to sweating. As of now, the rate and pathophysiological relevance of impaired sweating in patients with CholU are ill-defined. AIM: To assess in CholU patients the rate and extent of impaired sweating and its links to clinical and pathophysiological features of CholU. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We assessed sweating in patients with CholU (n = 13) subjected to pulse-controlled ergometry (PCE) provocation testing. Pre- and post-PCE biopsies of lesion

Sweat conductivity test - can it be a cheaper alternative to sweat chloride analysis for diagnosis of cystic fibrosis in low resource setting?

Background & objectives Availability of sweat chloride analysis, the gold standard test for diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis (CF) faces significant challenges in India. This study aimed to compare sweat conductivity using Sweat-Chek™ Sweat Analyzer against sweat chloride analysis using the 926 Sherwood chloride analyser and assess if sweat conductivity test can guide CF diagnosis in resource-poor settings. Methods In this retrospective study sweat chloride analysis and sweat conductivity were simultaneously performed on samples collected via Macroduct® system from patients referred for sweat testi

Transcriptome Profiling of Anhidrotic Eccrine Sweat Glands Reveals that Olfactory Receptors on Eccrine Sweat Glands Regulate Perspiration in a Ligand-Dependent Manner.

Sweat maintains systemic homeostasis in humans. Although sweating disorders may cause multifaceted health problems, therapeutic options for sweat disorders have not yet been established. To gain new insight into the mechanism underlying the regulation of perspiration, we compared eccrine sweat gland transcriptomes from hidrotic and anhidrotic lesions from patients with anhidrosis and found out that olfactory receptors were expressed differentially in anhidrotic and hidrotic eccrine sweat glands. We then confirmed OR51A7 and OR51E2 expression in human eccrine sweat glands by in situ hybridizati
