Short-term fluoxetine treatment enhances baroreflex control of sympathetic nervous system activity after hindlimb unloading.

Data in humans indicate that individuals with orthostatic hypotension that are refractory to other traditional forms of therapy are responsive to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) treatment. We tested the hypothesis that SSRI administration would help correct the attenuated baroreflex control of sympathetic nervous system activity in the hindlimb-unloaded (HU) rat model of cardiovascular deconditioning. An initial study was conducted to determine the time course of effects of fluoxetine (Flu) administration on baroreflex control of lumbar sympathetic nerve activity (LSNA) in consci

Developmental plasticity in sympathetic nervous system response to fasting in adipose tissues of male rats.

While fasting suppresses sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity in most peripheral tissues, the response of sympathetic nerves in white adipose tissue (WAT) is reportedly stimulatory. To confirm this finding and to determine if the fasting response in WAT is susceptible to developmental modification, SNS activity was compared in fed and fasted animals using techniques of [3H]norepinephrine ([3H]NE) turnover. Studies were performed in commercially reared 7-week-old male rats, in male rats reared in the local vivarium, and in male rats reared until 30 days of age at either 18 degrees C or 30

Salt sensitivity in human essential hypertension: effect of renin-angiotensin and sympathetic nervous system blockade.

We studied the acute effect of oral captopril (25mg) and clonidine(300 micrograms) on blood pressure (BP) in patients with essential hypertension successively maintained on a low (LSD) and high (HSD) salt diet. Seven patients were salt sensitive (SS) and seven were salt resistant (SR). The maximal decrease in diastolic BP caused by captopril in patients on the LSD was greater in SS than SR individuals. Baseline urinary norepinephrine levels did not change from LSD to HSD (p greater than 0.05) in SS patients and decreased in SR patients (p less than 0.05). The maximal decrease in mean BP during

Respiratory modulation of baroreceptor and chemoreceptor reflexes affecting heart rate through the sympathetic nervous system.

1. Brief stimuli were delivered to the carotid body chemoreceptors or the carotid sinus baroreceptors at different phases of the respiratory cycle in anaesthetized dogs. Chemoreceptor stimulation was achieved by injecting small volumes (0.2-0.5 ml.) of warmed saline equilibrated with CO(2) near to the carotid bodies on both sides. Baroreceptor stimulation was achieved by injecting larger volumes (2-5 ml.) of saline equilibrated with air into the region of the carotid bifurcation on both sides, after first clamping the common carotid arteries.2. Alexithymia in dyadic interactions: Associations with affective and sympathetic nervous system reactivity and empathic accuracy.

Alexithymia, defined as difficulty identifying and describing one's own emotions, is associated with poor mental and physical health and low-quality social relationships. These consequences of alexithymia may arise from disrupted emotional communication, making it difficult for others to understand and reduce the distress of a person with alexithymia. In the present study, we examine how alexithymia affects affective and physiological responding to distress and emotional disclosure in newly acquainted female dyads (N = 140; 70 dyads). Between 2015 and 2017, one member of each dyad (the experie

The impact of loud noise on sympathetic nervous system function, training efficacy, and workplace accuracy.

OBJECTIVES: Noise is a pervasive environmental factor in manufacturing settings and is a well-known cause of noise-induced hearing loss. However, its effects on autonomic nervous system function and cognitive work performance have not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to elucidate the impact of high-intensity noise exposure on autonomic activity and cognitive performance using objective physiological and behavioral indicators. METHODS: Task performance was assessed using two 15-minute sessions of the Uchida-Kraepelin test. Autonomic nervous system activity was evaluated through c

X-ray Radiotherapy Impacts Cardiac Dysfunction by Modulating the Sympathetic Nervous System and Calcium Transients.

Recent epidemiological studies have shown that patients with right-sided breast cancer (RBC) treated with X-ray irradiation (IR) are more susceptible to developing cardiovascular diseases, such as arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, and conduction disturbances after radiotherapy (RT). Our aim was to investigate the mechanisms induced by low to moderate doses of IR and to evaluate changes in the cardiac sympathetic nervous system (CSNS), atrial remodeling, and calcium homeostasis involved in cardiac rhythm. To mimic the RT of the RBC, female C57Bl/6J mice were exposed to X-ray doses ranging from

Gestational diabetes causes hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system and hypertension in adult mice offspring.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes can lead to increased blood pressure in offspring, accompanied by impaired renal sodium excretion function and vasoconstriction and diastole dysfunction. However, there are few studies on whether it is accompanied by increased sympathetic nerve activity. METHODS: Pregnant C57BL/6 mice were intraperitoneally injected with streptozotocin (35 mg/kg) or citrate buffer at day 0 of gestation. The mice of control mother offspring (CMO) and diabetic mother offspring (DMO) at 16 weeks of age were infused with vehicle (artificial cerebrospinal fluid, aCSF, 0.4 μL/h) or

Role of the sympathetic nervous system in cardiometabolic control: implications for targeted multiorgan neuromodulation approaches.

Sympathetic overdrive plays a key role in the perturbation of cardiometabolic homeostasis. Diet-induced and exercise-induced weight loss remains a key strategy to combat metabolic disorders, but is often difficult to achieve. Current pharmacological approaches result in variable responses in different patient cohorts and long-term efficacy may be limited by medication intolerance and nonadherence. A clinical need exists for complementary therapies to curb the burden of cardiometabolic diseases. One such approach may include interventional sympathetic neuromodulation of organs relevant to cardi

Activation of the Sympathetic Nervous System Promotes Blood Pressure Salt-Sensitivity in C57BL6/J Mice.

Global salt intake averages >8 g/person per day, over twice the limit advocated by the American Heart Association. Dietary salt excess leads to hypertension, and this partly mediates its poor health outcomes. In ≈30% of people, the hypertensive response to salt is exaggerated. This salt-sensitivity increases cardiovascular risk. Mechanistic cardiovascular research relies heavily on rodent models and the C57BL6/J mouse is the most widely used reference strain. We examined the effects of high salt intake on blood pressure, renal, and vascular function in the most commonly used and commercially a

Sympathetic nervous system dysfunction in multiple sclerosis, linking neurodegeneration to a reduced response to therapy.

A lower than normal function of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) has been identified early in the course of multiple sclerosis (MS) and has been shown to play a role in the pathology of the disease. In addition, the chronic use of many drugs commonly used by MS patients could further downregulate SNS by interfering with norepinephrine (NE) synthesis/release and/or interfering with the function of the adrenergic receptors in both the brain and in the periphery. This drug-induced downregulation of SNS activity, when imposed on a background of SNS dysfunction, could not only promote immune in

Relationship between activation of the sympathetic nervous system and renal blood flow autoregulation in cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: It has been proposed that activation of the sympathetic nervous system causes a rightward shift in the renal autoregulatory curve such that renal blood flow is critically dependent on renal perfusion pressure and that this contributes to the development of the hepatorenal syndrome. The aims of the study were to determine the relationship of renal blood flow and renal perfusion pressure in patients with liver cirrhosis and the effect on renal hemodynamics following insertion of a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS). METHODS: Fifty-six patients were recruited

Influence of sympathetic nervous system on sensorimotor function: whiplash associated disorders (WAD) as a model.

There is increasing interest about the possible involvement of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) in initiation and maintenance of chronic muscle pain syndromes of different aetiology. Epidemiological data show that stresses of different nature, e.g. work-related, psychosocial, etc., typically characterised by SNS activation, may be a co-factor in the development of the pain syndrome and/or negatively affect its time course. In spite of their clear traumatic origin, whiplash associated disorders (WAD) appear to share many common features with other chronic pain syndromes affecting the muscul

Anxiety sensitivity, state and trait anxiety, and perception of change in sympathetic nervous system arousal.

The psychological models of panic disorder predict that persons with this condition may demonstrate enhanced acuity for somatic stimuli, but research to date has produced conflicting results. Most studies have investigated acuity for cardiovascular responses such as heart rate. which may represent an inadequate test of this hypothesis because they would be unlikely to detect persons who respond maximally to panic through other physiological systems. The present study investigated the detection of changes in pulse transit time (PTT), as a reliable and omnibus measure of sympathetic nervous syst

Correlation of altered Q-T interval and sympathetic nervous system dysfunction in diabetic autonomic neuropathy.

We examined the relationship between the Q-T interval and autonomic dysfunction in 74 diabetic patients and age-matched controls. The expected Q-T interval was standardized as a function of the R-R interval in 646 healthy controls, and the delta Q-T defined as the difference from the expected value. Propranolol increased delta Q-T, confirming this as a parameter of autonomic function. No relationship between delta Q-T and duration of disease, glucose control, retinopathy or proteinuria was observed. However, significant correlations were found between the delta Q-T and delay of nerve conductio

Histochemically demonstrable catecholamines in the sympathetic nervous system of trisomic 16 and normal fetal mice.

The formaldehyde-induced fluorescence (FIF) and micro-spectrofluorometric techniques were used to study catecholamines in the sympathetic nervous system of normal and trisomy 16 fetal mice with a gestation age of 15 days, an animal model for human trisomy 21 (Down's syndrome). FIF intensity in the stellate sympathetic ganglion of trisomic embryos did not differ from that of controls, whereas in the adrenal medulla the FIF intensity was 38% less in trisomic than in control embryos. When adrenal medullary cells from embryos with a gestational age of 15 days were maintained in culture for 7-10 da

Changes in gastric secretion following administration of preparations affecting the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system.

The changes in gastric secretion following administration of different preparations have been studied in a group of 180 patients with duodenal ulcer and chronic gastritis. In patients with hypersecretion the medication with bishpan and inderal as compared with atropine caused considerable shifts in the indices of gastric secretion. Isoproterenol exerted a stimulating influence both on initial hyper- and hyposecretion, while the other preparations studied were shown not to cause any essential rise in gastric secretion in patients with secretory deficiency. Reliable changes of the stimulated gas

Assessment of short-term effects of thoracic radiotherapy on the cardiovascular parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.

BACKGROUND: Prior research suggests that cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction might be an early marker of cardiotoxicity induced by antitumor treatment and act as an early predictor of cardiovascular disease-related morbidity and mortality. The impact of thoracic radiotherapy on the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, however, remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of thoracic radiotherapy on the autonomic nervous system, using deceleration capacity (DC), acceleration capacity (AC) of heart rate, and heart rate variability (HRV) as assessme
