Infection control basis for recommending one-time use of sterile syringes and aseptic procedures for injection drug users.

Persons who inject drugs are at increased risk for many infectious diseases, including HIV. Reuse of syringes and needles and other equipment used to prepare and inject drugs increases the risk of infection with blood-borne and other pathogens. According to standard infection control guidelines, needles and syringes and their contents fall within the critical category of patient contact because they enter the normally sterile vascular space. Medical equipment considered critical should be treated or prepared in a manner that destroys vegetative and spore-forming microbes. The simplest way to e

A time and motion study of peripheral venous catheter flushing practice using manually prepared and prefilled flush syringes.

Peripheral venous catheters (PVCs) are the simplest and most frequently used method for drug, fluid, and blood product administration in the hospital setting. It is estimated that up to 90% of patients in acute care hospitals require a PVC; however, PVCs are associated with inherent complications, which can be mechanical or infectious. There have been a range of strategies to prevent or reduce PVC-related complications that include optimizing patency through the use of flushing. Little is known about the current status of flushing practice. This observational study quantified preparation and a

Strengthening Partnerships Between Syringe Services Programs and Police in the United States.

Syringe services programs (SSPs) are community-based prevention interventions that provide a range of services to people who use drugs (PWUD), including access to sterile injection equipment, treatment referrals, infectious disease testing, and overdose prevention through naloxone distribution. Research shows that SSPs are effective at reducing infectious disease transmission and connecting people to treatment. SSPs are also considered safe, cost-effective, and improve public safety. Despite strong research support, police in the United States (US) have historically opposed SSPs due to the bel

Driving Time, Distance, and Cost to Access Syringe Services Programs in the US.

IMPORTANCE: Syringe services programs (SSPs) are evidence-based interventions that reduce bloodborne infections and injection-related harms among people who inject drugs, yet access remains limited and geographically uneven across the US. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the travel time, distance, and cost required to reach the nearest SSP from population-weighted census tracts nationwide and to examine differences by urbanicity, state, and SSP legality. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional geospatial study linked all known SSP locations as of August 2024 to the population-weighted

Tribally-affiliated syringe services programs in the United States: a brief report.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the implementation of syringe services programs (SSPs) that serve Indigenous people who inject drugs in the United States (US). There are 574 Federally-recognized tribes in the US, each characterized by unique traditions, values, and customs. Given the diversity of tribes, better understanding SSP implementation in Native contexts first requires examining the degree to which tribes in the US implemented these programs. OBJECTIVE: This research describes the number of SSPs that are affiliated with Federally-recognized tribes in the US. METHODS: From July

Early disruptions to syringe services programs during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

INTRODUCTION: The widespread HIV epidemic in Ukraine is concentrated among people who inject drugs (PWID), making access to sterile injection paraphernalia (SIP) like sterile needles and syringes a critical method of HIV/AIDS prevention; however, the Russian invasion has threatened to disrupt the operations of syringe services programs (SSPs), creating a risk of HIV outbreaks among PWID. METHODS: We conducted 10 semi-structured interviews with outreach workers from SSPs. Interviews were purposively sampled to cover three prototypic regions of Ukraine: temporarily Russian-controlled, frontline

Recurrent papulonodular herpes zoster, with syringitis, folliculitis, and vasculitis as clues to the diagnosis.

Herpes zoster (HZ) may have atypical clinical presentations, particularly in immunosuppressed patients. Nodular HZ is an extremely rare condition. We report the first case of recurrent papulonodular HZ in an adult patient with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) receiving biologic treatment. More interestingly, there was no epidermal involvement on histopathological examination, but the involvement of the adnexa and blood vessels was a clue to the diagnosis in view of the clinical context. We wish to raise awareness of this rare manifestation of HZ for early diagnosis and proper treatment.

The role of syringic acid as a neuroprotective agent for neurodegenerative disorders and future expectations.

Hundreds of millions of people are influenced by neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), traumatic disorders of the nervous system, dementia, and various neurological disorders. Syringic acid (SA) is a natural phenolic compound that is found in medicinal herbs and dietary plants. The therapeutic potential of SA is due to its anti-oxidative, chemoprotective, anti-angiogenic, anti-glycating, anti-proliferative, anti-hyperglycaemic, anti-endotoxic, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-depressant properties. However, in recent

Design and development of a novel double-chamber syringe concept for venous catheterization.

This paper presents the optimization process for the development of an innovative double chamber syringe. Several aspects are involved such as design, functionality, fluid-structure interaction and friction between solids. To assist in the development of this medical device, a numerical based methodology was developed and validated in order to predict the syringe´s functionality, as well as its production by injection molding. The mechanical and flow behavior, during the filling and administration of medicine and washing solutions, were numerically modelled using the commercial software ABAQUS

Self-induced hemopericardium using a syringe needle: A rare method of suicide.

This communication highlights a rare case of suicide by self-induced hemopericardium caused by a penetrating syringe needle. A 20-year-old male, diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, severe depression and hypochondriasis, was found dead at home. There was a 23-gauge 3 cm long syringe needle, connected to a 3 cc barrel, penetrating the left side of the chest. Autopsy revealed 3 fresh puncture marks on the left side of the anterior chest with subcutaneous hemorrhage underlying the puncture marks. The needle had penetrated through the 4th intercoastal space and entered the pericardial cavity causing

Targeted release of transcription factors for cell reprogramming by a natural micro-syringe.

Ectopic expression of defined transcription factors (TFs) for cell fate handling has proven high potential interest in reprogramming differentiated cells, in particular for regenerative medicine, ontogenesis study and cell based modelling. Pluripotency or transdifferentiation induction as TF mediated differentiation is commonly produced by transfer of genetic information with safety concerns. The direct delivery of proteins could represent a safer alternative but still needs significant advances to be efficient. We have successfully developed the direct delivery of proteins by an attenuated ba
