The soft palate and the tongue of adult Bombina variegata L. were studied by means of light and scanning electron microscopy. In the palate numerous taste-disks were found prominent by their polygonal surface structures. These are caused by longer microvilli at the margins of the different cells of the taste-disk or by deepened margins of the polygonal cells. The surfaces of the cells are slightly convex and are covered by numerous microvilli. In the tongue primarily fungiform papillae were observed (with the exception of the margins were taste-disks similar to those found in the palate were p

The anatomy and neurohistology of the tongue of the Indian goat, Capra aegagrus, have been described. The apex linguae is notched in the centre. The foramen caecum is found to be absent. The sublingua could not be traced. The filiform papillae are the most common and divided into three types: the simple, giant, and true filiform papillae. The true filiform papillae are the most developed of the three types. The foliate papillae are absent. There are 13--14 circumvallate papillae arranged in two rows in a V-shaped pattern. The fungiform papillae are large and could easily be seen with the naked

BACKGROUND: Type III taste cells are the primary taste receptor cells that form conventional chemical synapses with gustatory nerve fibers. Since the first ultrastructural identification of synaptic vesicles in Type III cells, numerous studies have demonstrated that these cells have synapse-associated proteins and vesicular release machinery that is similar to that in the central nervous system.
HIGHLIGHT: This review summarizes historical and ultrastructural studies describing synaptic vesicles in taste bud cells across a range of animal species. The classical mechanisms of chemical synaptic

Taste signals are first detected by the taste receptor cells, which are located in taste buds existing in the tongue, soft palate, larynx and epiglottis. Taste receptor cells contact with the chemical compounds in oral cavity through the apical processes which protrude into the taste pore. Interaction between chemical compounds and the taste receptor produces activation of taste receptor cells directly or indirectly. Then the signals are transmitted to gustatory nerve fibers and higher order neurons. A recent study demonstrated many similarities between response properties of taste receptor ce

Traditionally, taste receptors (TRs) have been understood to reside within the taste buds on the tongue, serving as initiators for different taste perceptions. However, recent research has expanded our understanding, revealing that TRs are found throughout the body and perform a wide range of functions beyond taste perception as non-tasting functions. These receptors, along with their genetic variations, have been linked to various human health conditions. They are activated by an array of substances, including hormones, nutrients, and toxins, indicating their involvement in numerous biologica

Sensitivity of the somatosensory system may be influenced by multiple physiological parameters. Variations in oral physiology can arise from cross-cultural differences which may potentially affect sensory sensitivity. The aim of this case study was to quantify texture and taste sensitivity in Dutch (Caucasian) and Chinese (Asian) adults living in the Netherlands. Eighty-five healthy subjects were recruited including 44 Dutch (Caucasian) adults (29 females, 22.8 ± 2.3 yrs) and 41 Chinese (Asian) adults (30 females, 24.5 ± 2.1 yrs) living in the Netherlands for less than 1 year. Humans can perceive five canonical tastes: salty, sour, umami, sweet, and bitter. These tastes are transmitted through the activation of ion channels and receptors. Bitter taste receptors (Taste Family 2 Receptors; T2Rs) are a sub-family of 25 G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) isoforms that were first identified in type II taste bud cells. T2Rs are activated by a broad array of bitter agonists, which cause an increase in intracellular calcium (Ca2+) and a decrease in cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP). Interestingly, T2Rs are expressed beyond the oral cavity, where they play diverse n

Type 2 taste receptors (TAS2Rs), traditionally known for their role in bitter taste perception, are present in diverse reproductive tissues of both sexes. This review explores our current understanding of TAS2R functions with a particular focus on reproductive health. In males, TAS2Rs are believed to play potential roles in processes such as sperm chemotaxis and male fertility. Genetic insights from mouse models and human polymorphism studies provide some evidence for their contribution to male infertility. In female reproduction, it is speculated that TAS2Rs influence the ovarian milieu, shap

A fundamental requirement for all animals is to sense and respond to changes in environmental O2 availability. Low O2 (hypoxia) typically stimulates breathing, a universal and critical response termed the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR). In this study, we test the hypothesis that taste-signaling pathways are used for O2 sensing and activation of the HVR. We show that Merkel-like cells (MLCs), which are part of the taste-bud complex, function as O2 chemoreceptor cells in larval zebrafish and that transduction of the O2 signal uses taste-signaling pathways. Specifically, MLCs responded to hyp

Human taste cells are a heterogeneous population of specialized epithelial cells that are constantly generated from progenitor taste cells. Type I and type III taste cells express some neural markers, and studies have reported that direct innervation by neurons is not required for taste cell development. To our knowledge, no previous study has demonstrated that taste cells can differentiate into neuron-like cells or any other non-taste cell type. Here, for the first time, we describe a simple in vitro method that uses a serum-free neural induction medium to differentiate cultured physiological

The distribution of amiloride-sensitive sodium channels (ASSCs) in taste buds isolated from the oral cavity of hamsters was assessed by patch clamp recording. In contrast to the case for rats, taste cells from the fungiform, foliate and vallate papillae and from the soft palate all contain functional ASSCs. The differential distribution of ASSCs between the hamster and the rat may be important for understanding the physiology underlying the differing behavioral responses of these species to sodium salts.

The acute loss of taste and smell following COVID-19 are hallmark symptoms that affect 20-85% of patients. However, the pathophysiology and potential treatments of COVID-19 smell and taste loss are not fully understood. We searched the literature to review the potential pathologic pathways and treatment options for COVID-19 smell and taste loss. The interaction of novel coronavirus with ACE-2 receptors expressed on sustentacular cells and taste buds results in direct damage to the olfactory and gustatory systems. Also, the invasion of the virus to the olfactory neurons and consequent local inf

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that is known to have a strong genetic predisposition. Several psoriasis-susceptibility loci have been previously found through genomic scans. Of these, psoriasis-susceptibility region 1 (PSORS1) on chromosome 6p21 remains the most consistently identified region across populations with the highest association with disease. STG is a gene that was previously isolated from rhesus monkey taste buds, and its ortholog in humans was found to be part of the cluster of genes in PSORS1, which is telomeric to HLA-C. Upon characterization of STG, we identif

A 60-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a two day history of truncal ataxia and diplopia. Three days after admission, complete paresis of eye movements, left ptosis, taste impairment and absence of deep tendon reflexes appeared. The patient displayed normal facial movements; however, she reported decreased sensations of sweet and salty tastes. Anti-GQ1b antibodies were detected in the serum, and Fisher syndrome was therefore diagnosed. Intravenous immunoglobulin was administered starting five days after admission, with limitations of eye movements, areflexia and taste impairment

Taste buds on the tongue contain taste receptor cells (TRCs) that detect sweet, sour, salty, umami and bitter stimuli. Like non-taste lingual epithelium, TRCs are renewed from basal keratinocytes, many of which express the transcription factor SOX2. Genetic lineage tracing has shown that SOX2+ lingual progenitors give rise to both taste and non-taste lingual epithelium in the posterior circumvallate taste papilla (CVP) of mice. However, SOX2 is variably expressed among CVP epithelial cells, suggesting that their progenitor potential may vary. Using transcriptome analysis and organoid technolog

SARS-CoV-2 infects host cells mainly through the interaction between the virus's Spike protein and the viral receptors namely Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2). Both are highly expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, in the nasal and bronchial epithelium, as well as in the type II alveolar epithelial cells. The aim of this review is to report the evidences from the scientific literature on the pathophysiology and the available treatments for olfactory-gustatory disorders in patients with COVID-19. The mechanisms involved in these disorders ar

Progranulin deficiency in mice is associated with deregulations of the scavenger receptor signaling of CD36/SCARB3 in immune disease models, and CD36 is a dominant receptor in taste bud cells in the tongue and contributes to the sensation of dietary fats. Progranulin-deficient mice (Grn-/-) are moderately overweight during middle age. We therefore asked if there was a connection between progranulin/CD36 in the tongue and fat taste preferences. By using unbiased behavioral analyses in IntelliCages and Phenomaster cages we showed that progranulin-deficient mice (Grn-/-) developed a strong prefer

BACKGROUND: Endoderm-derived organs, including the gastrointestinal tract, play central roles in nutrient digestion and absorption. They simultaneously function as an "internalized external environment" that continuously interfaces with exogenous substances, thereby constituting a frontline of host defense. Chemosensory cells within the gastrointestinal epithelium, such as enteroendocrine cells and tuft cells, use molecular mechanisms analogous to those of taste reception to detect nutrients and xenobiotic compounds. However, because these populations are sparse, a comprehensive understanding
