A new cardiology patient simulator.

We report a new cardiology patient simulator developed through the application of new digital computer technology, capable of playing back selected physical findings (jugular-venous waves, arterial pulses of carotid, brachial, radial and femoral arteries, and cardiac impulses), as well as cardiac sounds, murmurs and respiratory sounds that have been prerecorded from actual patients. The examining physician uses an ordinary type of stethoscope. Four built-in speakers are located in the human-sized mannequin at the classic auscultatory sites (aortic, pulmonic, tricuspid and mitral). This compact

How will the Covid-19 pandemic shape the future of primary care undergraduate teaching? Understanding modifications and developments deployed by UK academic units of primary care, and their implications for the future.

BACKGROUND: Primary care has been under-represented in its contribution to the academic literature base on Covid-19 developments. We sought to understand how teaching and learning was modified and developed by primary care academic leaders to support the continuation of primary care-orientated learning during the Covid-19 pandemic; and explore how these changes may shape future educational delivery in primary care. METHODS: We adopted a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews of seven General Practice Heads of Teaching (GP HoTs) from UK medical schools. We used mixed deductive

The teaching and assessment of local anaesthesia in UK dental schools.

INTRODUCTION: Local anaesthesia (LA) is fundamental to successful dental treatment. Graduating hygienists, therapist and dentists should be confident and proficient in delivering LA. There is one previously published article reviewing LA teaching in United Kingdom (UK) dental schools in 2016, and at this time 10 out of 14 schools allowed peer-to-peer administration. The method of teaching LA administration has become an area of debate in terms of legality and morality given the potential complications and issues with valid consent. The aim of the study was to explore current teaching practices

A structured oral chemotherapy teaching tool to improve adherence in adults with multiple myeloma: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Many of the newer treatments for adults with newly-diagnosed and relapsed multiple myeloma (MM) are orally administered. Adherence is a challenge, and little is known about strategies to optimize adherence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven patients initiating orally-administered anti-myeloma therapy were enrolled and randomized in a pilot study to receive either standard of care teaching or the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer Oral agent Teaching Tool (MOATT), a structured teaching tool. Adherence was measured electronically with a Medication Event Monito

POCUS - a new computer-based training approach for improving the quality of ultrasound diagnostics in gallbladder diseases.

PURPOSE: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has gained widespread adoption in medical diagnostics due to its simplicity, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness. However, insufficient training remains a significant challenge and limits its effective use. Particularly neglected is image pattern recognition and interpretation. Conventional educational methods are struggling to meet the growing demand for comprehensive POCUS training. This study aims to address this gap by introducing a novel approach using a computer-based image recognition and interpretation training (CBIRIT). MATERIALS AND METHOD

How well do we truly understand clitoral anatomy? An Irish maternity hospital's perspective.

BACKGROUND: The clitoris has long been ignored in medical literature and teaching, with the first paper describing its anatomy only published in 1993. It is essential that those working in women's health understand the anatomy of this important female sexual organ. AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge of the anatomy of the clitoris across five cohorts in a busy teaching maternity hospital in Ireland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was devised, asking ten consultants, ten non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs), ten midwives, ten midwifery students and ten

[The Peking pharmacy institute and its teaching in the period of the Republic of China].

The Peking Pharmacy Institute, as the first independent pharmacy college in China, symbolised the beginning of the era of Chines people establishing pharmacy colleges and had a unique historical status and value. This is because it started in the period of the Republic of China, when Chinese pharmaceutical education was extremely deficient. Additionally, it had an important impact on pharmaceutical education in following generations as the predecessor of the Beijing Health Vocational College. This paper reports on the collation of relevant archives and historical materials, examination and exp

Management of gallstones and their complications.

The accurate differentiation of gallstone-induced biliary colic from other abdominal disease processes is the most crucial step in the successful management of gallstone disease. Despite the availability of many imaging techniques to demonstrate the presence of gallstones, clinical judgment ultimately determines the association of symptoms with cholelithiasis and its complications. Adult patients with silent or incidental gallstones should be observed and managed expectantly, with few exceptions. In symptomatic patients, the intervention varies with the type of gallstone-induced complication.

Alcohol-related problems: recognition and intervention.

Early identification of alcohol-related problems is important because these problems are prevalent, pose serious health risks to patients and their families, and are amenable to intervention. Physicians may be able to help patients change their drinking behaviors. The most effective tool for screening is a thorough history of the patient's drinking behavior, designed to identify patterns of alcohol-related difficulties with physical and mental health, family life, legal authorities and employment. Alcohol drinkers can be categorized as at-risk, problem or alcohol dependent, according to a prot

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia: a clinical review.

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is an opportunistic infection that occurs in immunosuppressed populations, primarily patients with advanced human immunodeficiency virus infection. The classic presentation of nonproductive cough, shortness of breath, fever, bilateral interstitial infiltrates and hypoxemia does not always appear. Diagnostic methods of choice include sputum induction and bronchoalveolar lavage. The drug of choice for treatment and prophylaxis is trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, but alternatives are often needed because of adverse effects or, less commonly, treatment failure. A

Intrauterine growth retardation.

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), which is defined as less than 10 percent of predicted fetal weight for gestational age, may result in significant fetal morbidity and mortality if not properly diagnosed. The condition is most commonly caused by inadequate maternal-fetal circulation, with a resultant decrease in fetal growth. Less common causes include intrauterine infections such as cytomegalovirus and rubella, and congenital anomalies such as trisomy 21 and trisomy 18. When IUGR is recognized, it is important to attempt to correct reversible causes, although many of the conditions resp

The concept lens diagram: a new mechanism for presenting biochemistry content in terms of "big ideas".

A strong, recent movement in tertiary education is the development of conceptual, or "big idea" teaching. The emphasis in course design is now on promoting key understandings, core competencies, and an understanding of connections between different fields. In biochemistry teaching, this radical shift from the content-based tradition is being driven by the "omics" information explosion; we can no longer teach all the information we have available. Biochemistry is a core, enabling discipline for much of modern scientific research, and biochemistry teaching is in urgent need of a method for deliv

SIGUEME: Technology-based intervention for low-functioning autism to train skills to work with visual signifiers and concepts.

BACKGROUND: People with low-functioning ASD and other disabilities often find it difficult to understand the symbols traditionally used in educational materials during the learning process. Technology-based interventions are becoming increasingly common, helping children with cognitive disabilities to perform academic tasks and improve their abilities and knowledge. Such children often find it difficult to perform certain tasks contained in educational materials since they lack necessary skills such as abstract reasoning. In order to help these children, the authors designed and created SIGUEM

[Teaching practice of anaerobic digestion microorganisms in Microbiology for Environmental Engineering].

Anaerobic digestion is a process in which organic matter is converted into methane and carbon dioxide through the catalysis of bacteria and archaea under anaerobic conditions. It is of great significance for the natural material cycle and sustainable development. Currently, textbooks of Microbiology for Environmental Engineering provide little information on the functional microorganisms involved in anaerobic digestion. As a result, students have a limited understanding of the complexity and applications of anaerobic microorganisms. To address this issue, we carried out teaching reforms. In th
