Acute effects of exposure to orthochlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) and the development of tolerance.

Beswick, F. W., Holland, P., and Kemp, K. H. (1972).Brit. J. industr. Med.,29, 298-306. Acute effects of exposure to orthochlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) and the development of tolerance. Of the many compounds capable of producing irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract two, ω-chloroacetophenone and orthochlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS), have been used as riot control agents. The latter, CS, has been in use for more than 10 years and is currently still in service. When dispersed as a smoke consisting of 1-micron diameter particles CS will produce lachrymation and pain and d

Safety and efficacy of carbon dioxide insufflation during gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection.

AIM: To compare the safety and efficacy of carbon dioxide (CO2) and air insufflation during gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). METHODS: This study involved 116 patients who underwent gastric ESD between January and December 2009. After eliminating 29 patients who fit the exclusion criteria, 87 patients, without known pulmonary dysfunction, were randomized into the CO2 insufflation (n = 36) or air insufflation (n = 51) groups. Standard ESD was performed with a CO2 regulation unit (constant rate of 1.4 L/min) used for patients undergoing CO2 insufflation. Patients received diazepam

Linking the Extended Autonomic System with the Homeostat Theory: New Perspectives about Dysautonomias.

Dysautonomias are conditions in which altered functions of one or more components of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) adversely affect health. This essay is about how elucidating mechanisms of dysautonomias may rationalize personalized treatments. Emphasized here are two relatively new ideas-the "extended" autonomic system (EAS) and the "homeostat" theory as applied to the pathophysiology and potential treatments of dysautonomias. The recently promulgated concept of the EAS updates Langley's ANS to include neuroendocrine, immune/inflammatory, and central components. The homeostat theory buil

Physics-informed, phenotype-based endotamponade selection in vitreoretinal surgery: current agents and emerging vitreous substitutes.

BACKGROUND: Endotamponade selection is best understood as a physics-informed, phenotype-based decision rather than one driven mainly by tamponade duration or material class. This narrative review integrates density, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity, and drug-tamponade interactions with phenotype-specific clinical outcomes. The result is a practical framework linking tamponade behavior to retinal geography, disease complexity, and postoperative feasibility. MAIN BODY: Lighter-than-water agents (air, expansile gases, and light silicone oils [LSOs]) preferentially support the superi

Tire wear particles concentrations in gully pot sediments.

While tire wear and tear is known to be a major source of microplastics in the environment, its monitoring is still hampered by the lack of analytical methods able to provide concentrations in environmental matrices. Tire wear particles (TWP) present in road runoff enter the drainage system through gully pots, built to prevent sediment deposition in the drainage system, and eventually protect downstream receiving waters. The aim of this study was to detect and quantify TWP in gully pot sediments, by using a novel method combining Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (STA), Fourier Transform Infrared

Less-lethal law enforcement weapons: clinical management of associated injuries in the emergency department.

Less-lethal weapons and tactics are being increasingly used by law enforcement to minimize the reliance on more-lethal force. While these methods are designated as "less-lethal," they can cause morbidity and mortality when deployed. Knowledge of these weapons and tactics can help direct the workup and management of patients with injuries from these methods and can protect clinicians from secondary exposure and injuries. This issue reviews the most common less-lethal weapons and tactics used by law enforcement, describes their mechanism of action, and discusses associated common injury patterns

Pharmacology of 0-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS).

1. The effects of o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile (CS) have been studied on several isolated organs and tissues, anaesthetized animals and cat encéphale isolé preparations.2. On the isolated guinea-pig ileum an initial dose of CS produced a small, non-maintained contraction. Subsequent doses had reduced effects. There was no effect on peristalsis when the substance was given intraluminally.3. No significant effects of CS were detected on the rat phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparation, the isolated perfused rabbit heart or on the contractor response of the indirectly stimulated cat tibialis musc

Chemical agents used in riot control and warfare.

The development of riot control agents is reviewed with emphasis on the major factors influencing the selection and deployment of those agents in current use. Typical agents, irrespective of their chemical nature, cause unpleasant symptoms involving the eyes, skin, mouth, nose and respiratory tract. Ideally, these symptoms cause the sufferer to seek escape from exposure and resolve within 15-30 minutes after exposure has ceased. The medical management of casualties is discussed, with particular consideration of the problems likely to be referred to a Poison Control Centre.

Lung function requirements in flying duty the problem of bronchial hyperresponsiveness in military aircrew.

UNLABELLED: Uncompromised lung function is essential for fitness to fly. Under hypobaric conditions there is an increased risk of hypoxemia. G-forces, positive pressure breathing and anti-G maneuvers cause physical stress to the lung tissue and altered pulmonary blood flow. Breathing with pure oxygen, dry cabin air and ozone can cause airway irritation. Chemically and physically by irritating agents may be present. Emergencies such as smoke in the cockpit or inhalation of tear gas can rapidly compromise the pulmonary system in susceptible persons. Sudden incapacitation may occur. Trapped gases

[A rare triple combination of mesenteric panniculitis, acute appendicitis and König´s syndrome in a patient operated for acute febrile intestinal obstruction: a case report].

Mesenteric panniculitis is a primary inflammation of the mesentery with variable necrosis, inflammation and fibrosis of the fatty tissue. It can be idiopathic (primary) or secondary (associated) to other diseases, asymptomatic and accidentally discovered or revealed by abdominal pain or complications (intestinal obstruction or peritonitis). We here report the case of a 53-year-old patient, admitted with acute abdominal pain, cessation of the transit of materials and gases, in a febrile context. Patient's history included chronic abdominal pain suggesting König´s syndrome and epigastralgia last
