Susceptibility Profile and Multiple Antibiotics Resistance of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., and Enterococci from Small-Scale Cattle Farms in Tennessee.

Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance in food-animal environments threatens sustainable production and public health, yet small farms remain poorly characterized as potential reservoirs of antimicrobial resistant bacteria. To address this, we investigated the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., and Enterococcus spp. from small-scale cattle farms in Tennessee, USA. Methods: Over one year, 153 environmental samples (soil, manure, water) were collected from 17 farms. Target bacteria were isolated and confirmed using selective agar, bioc

Consequences of delayed diagnosis of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in children--West Virginia, Michigan, Tennessee, and Oklahoma, May-July 2000.

Patients with Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), a tickborne infection caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, respond quickly to tetracycline-class antibiotics (e.g., doxycycline) when therapy is started within the first few days of illness; however, untreated RMSF may result in severe illness and death. Persons aged <10 years have the highest age-specific incidence of RMSF. This report summarizes the clinical course and outcome of RMSF in four children from four regions of the United States and underscores the need for clinicians throughout the United States to consider RMSF in children with rash

A Tale of Two Cohorts: Comparing HPV Vaccination Barriers and Facilitators Among HIV-Negative and HIV-Positive Women in Tennessee.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) continues to cause an estimated 4000 preventable cancer deaths each year in the United States. Given the prevalence of HPV-related disease and suboptimal vaccination rates, this study explores perceptions of HPV vaccination among HIV-negative females and females living with HIV in Tennessee. METHODS: This prospective, observational qualitative study consisted of narrative interviews which were conducted with HIV-negative and HIV-positive participants, focusing on their perceptions of HPV and its vaccine. Interviews were conducted by phone, and the verbat

First Covid-19 Vaccination Rates Among Pregnant Tennessee Women by Month of Conception and Urbanization Level: March 2021 - November 2021.

INTRODUCTION: Throughout the pandemic, COVID-19 vaccination coverage was lower for the general population living in rural counties than in urban counties. In Tennessee (TN), COVID-19 vaccinations became available to pregnant women in March 2021. Little is known about rates of COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy during the pandemic, or whether these rates changed or differed by urbanization level. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe COVID-19 vaccination rates among pregnant women in TN by month of conception and urbanization level. METHODS: COVID-19 vaccination data from the TN Im

BACKGROUND: In fall 2021, Tennessee school districts faced heightened debates over COVID-19 mitigation amid rising cases, limited vaccination availability, and widespread misinformation. School board meetings (SBMs) served as pivotal decision-making forums influencing district policies. This study investigated perceptions and misinformation regarding the COVID-19 mask mandate at SBMs held within 6 of Tennessee's largest school districts. With widespread debate over pandemic measures, including mask use in schools, understanding community sentiments is crucial for guiding public health policies

Using an Established Outbreak Response Plan and Molecular Epidemiology Methods in an HIV Transmission Cluster Investigation, Tennessee, January-June 2017.

INTRODUCTION: In April 2017, the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) was notified of an increase in the number of persons newly diagnosed with HIV in eastern Tennessee in the same month. Two were identified as persons with a history of injection drug use (IDU) and named each other as syringe-sharing partners, prompting an investigation into a possible HIV cluster among persons with a history of IDU. MATERIALS AND METHODS: TDH and public health staff members in eastern Tennessee collaborated to implement procedures outlined in TDH's HIV/hepatitis C virus (HCV) Outbreak Response Plan, includin

Urine drug testing results and paired oral fluid comparison from patients enrolled in long-term medication-assisted treatment in Tennessee.

Urine drug testing is recommended for individuals receiving medication-assisted treatment. It provides objective information for practitioners to consider and may serve as a protective factor against drug-related mortality. The primary objective of our study was to describe urine drug testing results for patients undergoing long-term medication-assisted treatment (≥6months). The secondary objective was to provide further evidence to establish oral fluid as a reliable alternative to urine. All subjects (n=639) included in the study were enrolled in one of five treatment centers in the state of

Sensitivity of Pregnancy Field on the COVID-19 Case Report Form Among Pregnancies Completed Through December 31, 2020: Illinois and Tennessee.

PURPOSE: The considerable volume of infections from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), has made it challenging for health departments to collect complete data for national disease reporting. We sought to examine sensitivity of the COVID-19 case report form (CRF) pregnancy field by comparing CRF data to the gold standard of CRF data linked to birth and fetal death certificates. DESCRIPTION: CRFs for women aged 15-44 years with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were linked to birth and fetal death certificates for pregnancies completed during January

Comparison of clinical presentations and burden of respiratory syncytial virus in infants across three distinct healthcare settings in Davidson County, Tennessee.

BACKGROUND: The burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-associated acute respiratory illnesses among healthy infants (<1 year) in the inpatient setting is well established. The focus on RSV-associated illnesses in the outpatient (OP) and emergency department (ED) settings are however understudied. We sought to determine the spectrum of RSV illnesses in infants at three distinct healthcare settings. METHODS: From 16 December 2019 through 30 April 2020, we performed an active, prospective RSV surveillance study among infants seeking medical attention from an inpatient (IP), ED, or OP clinic

Hospital recruitment for the Smallpox Pre-Event Vaccination Program: experiences from Florida, Nebraska, New Jersey, and Tennessee, December 2002-June 2003.

The Smallpox Pre-Event Vaccination Program (SPVP) for public health and hospital-based health care workers began on January 24, 2003. This report summarizes efforts made by health officials in Florida, Nebraska, New Jersey, and Tennessee to facilitate the voluntary participation of acute care hospitals in the SPVP. Seven common characteristics contributed to the success of programs in these four states: (1) early planning, building on existing competencies, and state government support, (2) carrying the program forward on a planned timeline with experienced vaccination staff, (3) use of multif

Clinical comparisons of La Crosse encephalitis and enteroviral central nervous system infections in a pediatric population: 2001 surveillance in East Tennessee.

BACKGROUND: La Crosse encephalitis (LAC) is a mosquito-borne illness that primarily affects children. In 1997, an initial cluster of cases was identified by the regional pediatric referral center in East Tennessee. Since that time, public health officials, pediatric infectious disease physicians, infection control nurses, laboratory personnel, entomologists, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consultants have collaborated to provide ongoing surveillance activities. Studies comparing LAC cases with non-LAC (no etiologic diagnosis) central nervous system infections have yielded no st

Costs of veterinary services and vaccines/drugs used for prevention and treatment of diseases in 60 Tennessee cow-calf operations (1987-1988).

Four percent of the total cost of disease in 60 Tennessee cow-calf herds in 1987 to 1988 was attributable to veterinary services, and 2.3% was attributable to the purchase of drugs to treat sick animals. When producers spent money on therapeutic veterinary services, it was most often attributable to diseases of the reproductive system ($0.69/cow annually), especially dystocia ($0.51/cow annually). When drugs were used therapeutically, the most was spent on products to treat respiratory tract disease ($0.37/cow annually). The cost of preventive veterinary services accounted for 8.8% of the tota

Assessment of Tennessee's county-level vulnerability to hepatitis C virus and HIV outbreaks using socioeconomic, healthcare, and substance use indicators.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and injection drug use are syndemic in the central Appalachian states. In Tennessee (TN), declines in HIV among persons who inject drugs (PWID) stalled, and HCV infection rates increased significantly from 2013-2017. To better target strategies to address the syndemic, county-level socioeconomic, opioid use, access to healthcare, and health factors were modeled to identify indicators predictive of vulnerability to an HIV/HCV outbreak among PWID in TN. METHODS: Newly reported chronic HCV cases among persons aged 13-39 yea

Candida auris Containment Responses in Health Care Facilities that Provide Hemodialysis Services - New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, 2020-2023.

Candida auris, a frequently multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen, poses an urgent public health threat due to its potential to spread within and between health care facilities. Facilities that offer dialysis services might face particular challenges in preventing and containing C. auris and other multidrug-resistant pathogens, given the frequent use of invasive treatments in an immune-compromised patient population. During 2020-2023, in five separate facilities providing dialysis care across four states (New Jersey, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee), six patients infected or coloni
