Willingness to receive text message medication reminders among patients on antiretroviral treatment in North West Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Non-adherence to Antiretroviral Treatment (ART) is strongly associated with virologic rebound and drug resistance. Studies have shown that the most frequently mentioned reason for missing ART doses is the forgetfulness of patients to take their medications on time. Therefore using communication devices as reminder tools, for example alarms, pagers, text messages and telephone calls could improve adherence to ART. The aim of this study is to measure access to cellphones, willingness to receive text message medication reminders and to identify associated factors of ART patients at th

Developing supporter-focused text messages to enhance cessation support for individuals with mental health conditions who smoke: A formative study.

IntroductionThis formative study aimed to develop and evaluate supporter-focused text messages intended to enhance helpful support behaviors and reduce counterproductive support behaviors in the context of smoking cessation.MethodsWe developed 65 messages informed by responsiveness theory and established research on cessation. One hundred and ninety six adults (eligibility: ≥18 years, knowing someone who smokes) rated the messages on three dimensions of helpfulness (i.e., clarity, usefulness, relevance). Using mixed-effects regression models, we examined whether helpfulness ratings differed by

Validity of single item responses to short message service texts to monitor depression: an mHealth sub-study of the UK ACUDep trial.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of research designs are using text messaging (SMS) as a means of self-reported symptom and outcome monitoring in a variety of long-term health conditions, including severity ratings of depressed mood. The validity of such a single item SMS score to measure latent depression is not currently known and is vital if SMS data are to inform clinical evaluation in the future. METHODS: A sub-set of depressed participants in the UK ACUDep trial submitted a single SMS text score (R-SMS-DS) between 1 and 9 on how depressed they felt around the same time as completing the

Persistence of pain in patients with chronic low back pain reported via weekly automated text messages over one year.

BACKGROUND: A previous study has suggested that it is uncommon for patients with chronic bothersome low back pain (LBP), who consult the secondary health care sector, to report at least four consecutive weeks without such bothersome pain in 1 year. It is not yet known, however, how many days of the week they experience pain throughout the year. METHOD: The current study analyzed data collected in two randomized clinical studies conducted in 2007-9 on patients with back pain (Study 1 and 2). Study participants were patients with LBP for more than 2 months, one group with MRI-defined Modic chan
