In-situ deposition of Cu2O micro-needles for biologically active textiles and their release properties.

Metal/metal oxide containing fibres are gradually increasing in textile industrialization recently, owing to their high potential for application as antimicrobial textiles. In this study, the reducing properties of cellulose were applied to synthesize cuprous oxide in-situ. The direct formation of Cu2O on viscose fabrics was achieved via quite simple technique in two subsequent steps: alkalization and sorption. Cu contents in fabrics before and after rinsing ranged between 45.2-86.4mmol/kg and 18.1-67.7mmol/kg, respectively. Uniform micro-needles of Cu2O were obtained with regular size and dim

Sustainable Cellulose-Based Fibers with AIE-Driven Type I Photodynamic Antibacterial Activity for Reusable Bioactive Textiles.

The development of durable, light-activated antibacterial materials is crucial for addressing microbial contamination in biomedical and textile applications. Herein, we report the fabrication of photoresponsive antibacterial cellulose fibers by doping a Type I aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizer, PS 1, via a wet-spinning strategy. PS 1 exhibits strong fluorescence and efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in the aggregated state, primarily producing superoxide anions with minimal singlet oxygen. Incorporating 2 wt % PS 1 preserves the smooth morphology, mechanical r

Towards E-textiles in augmentative and alternative communication - user scenarios developed by speech and language therapists.

PURPOSE: E-textiles have been the focus of interest in health technology, but little research has been done so far on how they could support persons with complex communication needs. A global estimate is that 97 million people may benefit from Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Unfortunately, despite the growing body of research, many persons with complex communication needs are left without functional means to communicate. This study aimed to address the lack of research in textile-based AAC and to build a picture of the issues that affect novel textile-based technology develop

Mechanical properties, in vitro degradation and cytocompatibility of woven textiles manufactured from PLA/PCL commingled yarns.

The mechanical, thermal, and biological performance of fabrics manufactured with hybrid PLA/PCL commingled yarns were studied. Commingled hybrid yarns take advantage of the higher elastic modulus of PLA and the higher ductility and toughness of PCL to produce yarns and fabrics with high strength and ductility that is transferred to the woven textiles. Furthermore, PLA and PCL exhibit different degradation rates and also allow to tailor this property. Degradation of the textiles was carried out in phosphate-buffered saline solution for up to 160 days at 37 °C and 50 °C (accelerated degradation)

Orthogonal design-guided preparation of multi-level porous-activated carbon by pyrolysis of waste polyester textiles.

Multi-level porous amorphous-activated carbon with excellent adsorption performance was prepared by a ZnCl2-assisted pyrolysis of waste polyester textiles. Experimental parameters were optimized by using orthogonal design. Result of orthogonal design revealed that pyrolysis temperature and pyrolysis time were the dominant individual factors. Samples prepared at the optimal condition were systematically characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) porosity analyzer, FT-IR spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TE

Can ultraviolet light C decrease the environmental burden of antimicrobial-resistant and -sensitive bacteria on textiles?

BACKGROUND: The environment is important in transmission of bacteria. Textiles are difficult and time consuming to clean; ultraviolet light C (UVC) is germicidal and may be an effective disinfection method for textile surfaces. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the efficacy of UVC, a commercial quaternary ammonium compound antimicrobial spray (FAS) and UVC+FAS combined for reducing bacterial colonization on experimentally contaminated textiles. METHODS: Microfibre, cotton and polyester were inoculated with meticillin-sensitive and -resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA and MRSA), Staphylococcu

The detection of formaldehyde in textiles using interdigitated microelectrode array diffusion layer titration with electrogenerated hypobromite.

An interdigitated microelectrode array (IDA) was applied to the determination of formaldehyde released from textiles produced in industry. The proposed method is based on formaldehyde reaction with hypobromite which is formed in weakly basic media by control current electrooxidation of bromide on the generator segment of the IDA array. The unreacted hypobromite diffuses through the gap between individually polarisable IDA segments and it is amperometrically detected on the collector segment of the IDA. The efficiency of this nonconvective transfer process in the absence of formaldehyde was sub

A Review of Textile Hydrogel Integration in Firefighting Personal Protective Clothing.

Traditional firefighting protective clothing materials, such as meta- and para-aramid fibers, provide significant thermal protection but often fail to adequately manage heat stress and moisture, especially due to the incorporation of semi-permeable membranes within the three-layer garment structure known as turnout gear. Integrating hydrogels into textiles for firefighting personal protective clothing (PPC) could enhance thermoregulation and moisture management, providing firefighters with improved comfort and safety. Hydrogels are three-dimensional, hydrophilic polymer networks capable of hol

Silk Fibroin Protective Coating for Washable and Reusable Textile Electronics.

In this study, a new way of protecting textile wearable electronics is proposed. A natural product, silk fibroin, known for its high biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low cytotoxicity, was selected to cover the functionalized fabric to improve its stability and enable washability. Silk fabric was selected as a non-toxic material, suitable for further application on skin and for wearable devices. Silk fabric was functionalized with various amounts of high-pressure carbon monoxide single-walled carbon nanotubes (HiPCO SWNTs). HiPCO SWNTs made the fabric electroconductive, but they are easi

Textile fibres in the respiratory tract part 1: A background study.

Fibre traces recovered from the respiratory tract have the potential to be informative in cases of suspected smothering. In order to interpret such findings, it is important to understand the background population of fibres in respiratory tract such that the probabilities of adventitious recovery of such fibres can be assigned. This study builds upon previous studies by first testing various recovery methods on both living participants and cadavers. Once the most suitable recovery methods were identified, background sampling of fibres was carried out on living volunteers in the nostrils (using

Design of Wearable Textile Electrodes for the Monitorization of Patients with Heart Failure.

Heart failure is a severe medical condition with an important worldwide incidence that occurs when the heart is unable to efficiently pump the patient's blood throughout the body. The monitoring of edema in the lower limbs is one of the most efficient ways to control the evolution of the condition. Impedance spectroscopy has been proposed as an efficient technique to monitor body volume in patients with heart failure. It is necessary to research new wearable devices for remote patient monitoring, which can be easily worn by patients in a continuous way. In this work, we design and implement ne

Textile Electronics with Laser-Induced Graphene/Polymer Hybrid Fibers.

The concept of wearables is rapidly evolving from flexible polymer-based devices to textile electronics. The reason for this shift is the ability of textiles to ensure close contact with the skin, resulting in comfortable, lightweight, and compact "always with you" sensors. We are contributing to this polymer-textile transition by introducing a novel and simple way of laser intermixing of graphene with synthetic fabrics to create wearable sensing platforms. Our hybrid materials exhibit high electrical conductivity (87.6 ± 36.2 Ω/sq) due to the laser reduction of graphene oxide and simultaneous

Contact sensitivity to textile dyes in patients with pigmented purpuric dermatosis.

Purpose: The aetiology of pigmented purpuric dermatoses is unclear. Recent studies speculate about contact sensitivity to play a role in the aetiology of the disease. In most patients, the lesions begin and stay limited on the lower extremities as textile products are in tight contact with the skin. Also, textile dyes can cause contact dermatitis of purpuric type. This study was conducted in order to understand whether the contact sensitivity plays a critical role in the aetiology of pigmented purpuric dermatoses. Materials and methods: Patients with diagnosis of pigmented purpuric dermatoses

Lymphomatoid contact dermatitis associated with textile dye at an unusual location.

Lymphomatoid contact dermatitis (LCD) is a rare variant of noneczematous allergic contact dermatitis, which can mimick parapsoriasis or early-stage mycosis fungoides with its atypical clinical and histopathological manifestation. Many different haptens have been reported to be associated with this reaction. Histopathological examination, immunhistochemistry, clonality tests, and patch tests are mandatory for diagnosis and differential diagnosis. We present a 48-year-old male with a four years history of a relapsing erythematous plaque on the glans penis. Topical corticosteroids had been prescr

Evaluation of textile substrates for dispensing synthetic attractants for malaria mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: The full-scale impact of odour-baited technology on the surveillance, sampling and control of vectors of infectious diseases is partly limited by the lack of methods for the efficient and sustainable dispensing of attractants. In this study we investigated whether locally-available and commonly used textiles are efficient substrates for the release of synthetic odorant blends attracting malaria mosquitoes. METHODS: The relative efficacy of (a) polyester, (b) cotton, (c) cellulose + polyacrylate, and (d) nylon textiles as substrates for dispensing a synthetic odour blend (Ifakara b

Textile heart valve: first in-vivo experiment in the aortic position.

Non-invasive aortic valve implantation has become an alternative technique to surgical valve replacement in patients at high risk for open-chest surgery. With over 100,000 procedures already performed clinically, the technology is expected to involve less-critical patients in future. Whereas, biological valve tissue is a fragile material when folded for low-diameter catheter insertion purposes, textile polyester is a less-fragile material and may offer an alternative material to replace valve leaflets. One issue related to textile is the porosity of the material, which may induce exaggerated t
