Penicillinase plasmids of Staphylococcus aureus often contain genes conferring resistance to inorganic mercury (Hg(2+)) and the organomercurial phenylmercury acetate. The mechanism of resistance was found to be the enzymatic hydrolysis of the organomercurial phenylmercury to benzene plus inorganic ionic mercury, which was then enzymatically reduced to metallic mercury (Hg(0)). The Hg(0) was rapidly volatilized from the medium into the atmosphere. After the mercurial was degraded and the mercury was volatilized, the resistant cells were able to grow. These plasmids also conferred the ability to

This study investigates the binding of ethylmercury (EtHg+) released from the preservative thiomersal by hydrolysis to proteins in influenza vaccines via ultrafiltration and subsequent total reflection x-ray fluorescence (TXRF) analysis as well as size exclusion chromatography (SEC) hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Binding of EtHg+ to the protein fraction was shown by means of ultrafiltration and TXRF in a qualitative matter. SEC/ICP-MS was applied to gain more information about the molecular weight of the bound protein and quantitative information. First ex

While the whole killed spherule vaccine, protective in mice and monkeys, did not prevent coccidioidal disease in humans, the 27K vaccine, a soluble derivative, retains protective activity in mice with little irritant action. Gel filtration and anion exchange fractions of thimerosal-inactivated spherules (T27K), when administered with alum adjuvant, also protect mice against lethal respiratory coccidioidal challenge. However, the superb protection afforded by T27K antigens is maintained for some 3 months, but may then diminish. This appears unrelated to the aging of the mice. Prolongation of th

Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were immunized with various cephalosporin- and penicillin-ovalbumin (OvA) in combination with aluminium hydroxide (alum) and thimerosal-killed Bordetella pertussis. Anti-cephalosporin IgE antibody production was inferior to anti-penicillin IgE antibody production. Cefsulodin (CFS), sulbenicillin (SBPC) and alpha-sulfophenyl acetic acid (SPAA) cross-reacted with each other but did not react with cephaloridine (CER), cefazolin (CEZ) and penicillin G (PCG). CER and PCG slightly cross-reacted with each other but did not cross-react with the others tested. Anti-CFS and anti

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact dermatitis is a significant health problem in hairdressers. The number of occupational skin diseases in this group constantly increases. The most frequent factors contributing to the skin damage include water, shampoos, detergents, conditioners, hair dyes, bleaches, permanent wave solutions, and components of gloves.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of 121 hairdressers (106 women and 6 men) was selected from 4523 patients (2996 women and 1527 men) referred to the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Łódź, in 1995-2008, with suspected occupational skin diseas

Soft contact lenses worn by six patients (12 eyes) diagnosed as having contact lens-induced superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK) and from four patients (5 eyes) with giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) were analyzed for protein concentration and for elemental content. Fifty-five percent water content, ionic lenses containing methacrylic acid had high protein concentration. Calcium was not a common element found on protein-coated lenses. Sulfur and iron were found on used and new lenses. An elevated level of mercury was detected in one gray lens that had been disinfected in thimerosal-pr

Two recent clinical trials on the safety of amalgam fillings in children found no evidence of harmful effects from mercury-containing dental fillings after following children for 5-7 years. This review suggests the studies' results are limited by (1) sample sizes that were too small to allow detection of genetic variations in mercury toxicity at a rate of 1 in 100 or lower, (2) a lack of control for other sources of mercury, and (3) a population that may have been skewed by excluding children with autism during a time when autism was escalating due, in part, to increased frequency of thimerosa

We present an 11-year-old girl, with celiac disease, and a 9- month history of itchy and erythemato-edematous lesions with vesicles and exudation on her nipples and areolas. No other lesions or signs of scratching were present on her face or folds. She had no specific lesions of atopic dermatitis in typical sites nor in other body surface during her life. Patch tests showed a positive reaction to nickel and thimerosal that was not significantly related to the clinical appearance. This presentation documents the clinical relevance of atopic dermatitis minor diagnostic criteria. We discuss the i

Availability of a safe, immunogenic, and affordable vaccine would represent the best strategy for control of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Stability in field conditions is a essential property for any candidate vaccine. The stability and immunogenicity of three different preparations (thimerosal-preserved, autoclaved, and lyophilized) of a killed Leishmania amazonensis vaccine were assessed using fresh products and after 12 months of storage at 4 degrees C. Autoclaving was associated with a time-dependent decrease in the immunogenicity of the vaccine, as measured by the leishmanin skin test an

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a type IV delayed hypersensitivity reaction. During the last decade, there has been a heightened awareness of this disease in the pediatric population. The gold standard for diagnosis is patch testing. The prevalence of positive patch tests in referred children with suspected ACD ranges from 27 to 95.6 %. The most common allergens in children in North America are nickel, neomycin, cobalt, fragrance, Myroxylon pereirae, gold, formaldehyde, lanolin/wool alcohols, thimerosal, and potassium dichromate. The relationship between ACD and atopic dermatitis (AD) is

This review covers the toxicology of mercury and its compounds. Special attention is paid to those forms of mercury of current public health concern. Human exposure to the vapor of metallic mercury dates back to antiquity but continues today in occupational settings and from dental amalgam. Health risks from methylmercury in edible tissues of fish have been the subject of several large epidemiological investigations and continue to be the subject of intense debate. Ethylmercury in the form of a preservative, thimerosal, added to certain vaccines, is the most recent form of mercury that has bec

Exposure through human skin from application of skin lightening creams and soaps (SLCS) based on mercury salts has often escaped attention of environmental scientists. The skin absorption of Hg from an adult on a daily basis in this type of exposure, depending on the product used, can be higher than Hg originated from dental amalgam filling, Thimerosal-containing flu vaccine, and fish-methylmercury. Hg from SLCS is retained more in brain of albino than pigmented animals. Therefore, environmental Hg scientists should be aware of this important but often neglected source of low-dose Hg exposure

This article reviews the 2007 recommended childhood and adolescent immunization schedules; the catch-up immunization schedules for children and adolescents; the 2006-2007 recommended adult immunization schedule; recommended and minimum ages and intervals between vaccine doses; contraindications for immunization; and general guidelines on immunization procedures. With the exception of some formulations of influenza vaccines, all recommended childhood vaccines are thimerosal-free. Since 2005, changes in vaccine schedules affect the following vaccinations: hepatitis A, rotavirus, human papillomav

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a delayed type of hypersensitivity from contact with a specific allergen to which the patients has developed a specific sensitivity. The aim of the study was to evaluate the results of epicutaneous patch testing with standard series of contact allergen in patients suspected to have ACD.
METHODS: 355 cases of ACD were included in the study. Test substances were applied on the upper part of the patient's back, on clinically uninvolved and untreated skin. All patients were free from therapy with oral antihistamines, steroids and immunosuppressants

Patch testing is an important diagnostic tool commonly used to identify allergens responsible for allergic contact dermatitis, especially in cases where the diagnosis is not clearly apparent. The authors report the patch test results from 2004-2008 and compare the results with the North American Contact Dermatitis Group and Mayo Clinic. Four hundred thirty-four patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis underwent standardized patch testing with a tray consisting of 50 allergens at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Two hundred ninety patients (66.8%) had positive reactions to at least one al

Recent, rapid changes in recommendations regarding vaccination represent challenges for busy clinicians who need to be familiar with new developments. This article reviews the current age-based recommendations that are fundamental to the United States vaccine program, as well as current recommendations regarding contraindications, precautions, administration techniques, and storage procedures for routinely administered vaccines. The 2003 Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule, the 2002-2003 Recommended Adult Immunization Schedule, contraindications for immunization, and general guidelines

A case of papular itching lesions after microsclerotherapy with chromated glycerin (CG) at a 72% concentration for telangiectases of the thighs is reported. Patch-test results were strongly positive for nickel sulfate (+++/+++) and thimerosal (++/++) whereas results were negative for the sclerosing agent CG 72% and glycerol (control). Intradermal injection of CG 72% in the thigh and intravascular injection of CG 72% into telangiectases of the knee produced erythematous papular itching lesions in about 5 to 6 hours. As a negative control, glycerol and sodium chloride 0.9% injected intradermical
