Sodium thiosulfate enhances production of polysaccharides and anticancer activities of sulfated polysaccharides in Antrodia cinnamomea.

Sulfated polysaccharides (SPSs) are polysaccharides (PSs) with high sulfate functionalization and possess bioactivities. This study aimed to increase the sulfate content of SPSs in Antrodia cinnamomea through sulfate feeding. Feeding A. cinnamomea with sodium thiosulfate was found to increase yields of PSs and SPSs in A. cinnamomea. The SPSs thus obtained (ST-SPS) were further isolated, showing enhanced sulfate content of 2.5 mmol/g. Sodium thiosulfate induced changes in molecular weight from 320 kDa to 1342 kDa, and area percentage of low-molecular-weight ST-SPS (< 20 kDa) was decreased. Func

Microbially Influenced Corrosion of Stainless Steel by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans Supplemented with Pyrite: Importance of Thiosulfate.

Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) results in significant damage to metallic materials in many industries. Anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have been well studied for their involvement in these processes. Highly corrosive environments are also found in pulp and paper processing, where chloride and thiosulfate lead to the corrosion of stainless steels. Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is a critically important chemolithotrophic acidophile exploited in metal biomining operations, and there is interest in using A. ferrooxidans cells for emerging processes such as electronic waste recyc

The effect of sodium thiosulfate dechlorination on fecal indicator bacteria enumeration: laboratory and field data.

In microbiological water quality testing, sample dechlorination with sodium thiosulfate is recommended to ensure that results accurately reflect the water quality at sample collection. Nevertheless, monitoring institutions in low-resource settings do not always dechlorinate samples, and there is limited research describing how this practice impacts drinking water quality results. The effect of dechlorination on indicator bacteria counts was evaluated by spiking laboratory water with five Escherichia coli (E. coli) concentrations (104-108 CFU/100 mL), chlorinating at six doses (0-0.6 mg/L), hol

Protective effects of sodium thiosulfate for cisplatin-mediated ototoxicity in patients with head and neck cancer.

CONCLUSIONS: Intra-arterial high-dose cisplatin chemoradiation (CRT-IA) with sodium thiosulfate (STS) causes relatively less severe cisplatin ototoxicity than intravenous cisplatin chemoradiation without STS (CRT-IV). The results of this study also suggest that early detection of ototoxicity is possible by testing the hearing loss at ultra-high frequencies. OBJECTIVES: To investigate protective effects of STS against cisplatin ototoxicity. METHODS: Between 2011 and 2013, 18 patients with head and neck carcinomas were treated with intra-arterial infusions of high-dose cisplatin (range 100-180

Thermodynamic and kinetic study of the single extraction of mercury from soil using sodium-thiosulfate.

The use of sodium-thiosulfate (Na-thiosulfate) as a reagent for the extraction of mercury (Hg) from soil was investigated. High organic matter content in soil plays a major role in retaining metals. It has previously been reported that using the cold vapour atomic absorption method, powerful reagents such as EDTA, DTPA and cysteine could not release Hg from soil samples. The optimal conditions for using Na-thiosulfate to extract soil-Hg are presented here. Our results show that 50±5% of total Hg was extracted from soil samples using 0.01molL(-1) of the reagent without pH adjustment. Increasing

Dechlorination with sodium thiosulfate affects the toxicity of wastewater contaminated with copper, cadmium, nickel, or zinc.

Sodium thiosulfate is recommended by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for dechlorination of the effluent samples containing residual chlorines before the toxicity testing. For samples contaminated with residual chlorine and metals, e.g., Cd(II), Cu(II) and Ni(II); however, metal toxicity as measured with Daphnia magna was reduced even at approximately half the recommended amount of sodium thiosulfate. Formation of metal-thiosulfate complexes that are less bioavailable may explain the apparent reduction of metal toxicity. In contrast, for samples spiked with Zn(II), dechlorination with sodi

Sodium thiosulfate administered six hours after cisplatin does not compromise antineuroblastoma activity.

PURPOSE: We determined if the potentially otoprotective agent sodium thiosulfate (STS) could be given 6 h after cisplatin without diminishing the antineuroblastoma activity of cisplatin in human neuroblastoma cell lines in vitro (including cisplatin-resistant cell lines) and in neuroblastoma xenografts in vivo. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We determined the antineuroblastoma activity of cisplatin with or without the addition of STS at 0 or 6 h after cisplatin in six neuroblastoma cell lines, both in standard cell culture conditions (20% O(2)) and in physiologic hypoxia (2% O(2)). Cardioprotective role of sodium thiosulfate on chronic heart failure by modulating endogenous H2S generation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sodium thiosulfate (STS) has been shown to be an antioxidant and calcium solubilizer, but the possible role of STS in dysfunctional ventricles remains unknown. Here, we assessed the effects of STS in the failing heart. METHODS: Heart failure was created by an arteriovenous fistula (AVF). Mice were divided into 4 groups: sham, AVF, sham + STS, and AVF + STS. STS (3 mg/ml) was supplemented with drinking water for 6 weeks in the appropriate surgery groups after surgery. RESULTS: M-mode echocardiograms showed ventricular contractile dysfunction with reduced aortic blood flow in

Long-lasting patch reactions to gold sodium thiosulfate occurs frequently in healthy volunteers.

In a skin irritancy study in healthy volunteers with 3 metal salts, aqueous gold sodium thiosulfate (GSTS) in a dilution series caused unexpectedly frequent and strong patch test reactions on volar forearm skin in 22 of 31 participants (71%). The reactions showed morphological features consistent with a contact allergic reaction, and the crescendo type of the response speaks in favour of an allergic nature. Further, 8 of the 31 (26%) developed long-lasting test reactions. A follow-up interview among 28/31 participants 10 years later showed that none had experienced long-term consequences in th

Local application of sodium thiosulfate prevents cisplatin-induced hearing loss in the guinea pig.

Cisplatin (CDDP), an anticancer drug used extensively to treat a broad range of neoplasms, has strong ototoxic side effects. Sodium thiosulfate (STS) has been described as a protective agent against CDDP toxicity, but it also reduces CDDP's antitumoral cytotoxicity. To maintain the antitumoral effectiveness of systemic administration of CDDP, a strategy has been developed to apply STS directly into the cochlea. Perfusion of STS into the cochleae of guinea pigs completely prevented CDDP-induced hearing loss, with no change in either compound action potential (CAP) or distortion product otoacous

The efficiency of aquocobalamine as an antidote in cyanide poisoning when given alone or combined with sodium thiosulfate.

The antidotal activities of aquocobalamineacetates and sodium thiosulfate were tested in guinea pigs and cats. The animals were attached to artificial respirators throughout the experiment and were poisoned with a continuous infusion of sodium cyanide solution (4.1 muMol/kg.min NaCN). The rate of action of each antidote was determined from the time taken for the HCN exhalation to drop below the level of 100 nMol/kg.min in quinea pigs, and to values below 25 nMol/kg.min in cats; the detoxifying capacity of each antidote was determined from the time taken for the HCN exhalation to rise above the

Absorption of nitrogen dioxide via a non-packing scrubber using a sulfite/thiosulfate complex absorbent.

The conventional packing-type scrubber was found to exhibit high efficiency in treating exhaust gases. However, achieving effective performance requires large surface areas of packing materials, leading to a substantial pressure drop and a large energy consumption. Therefore, the present study demonstrates the advantages of a non-packing scrubbing system and investigates the effect of thiosulfate (S2O32-) ion on NO2 absorption using a sulfite solution. The efficiency of the system with 0.1 M Na2SO3 solution increased substantially upon the addition of 0.1 M Na2S2O3 and maintained an efficiency

Mechanistic insights into microbial and functional responses to norfloxacin in a thiosulfate-mediated denitrification granular sludge system.

Thiosulfate-driven denitrification granular sludge systems offer a promising strategy for treating wastewater with low carbon-to-nitrogen ratios. In this study, the system achieved 97.0 % nitrate removal and 50.2 % norfloxacin removal within a 1.5-hour hydraulic retention time, without nitrite accumulation. Norfloxacin was degraded via acetylation, defluorination, and quinoline ring cleavage, reducing the ecotoxicity of transformation products. Functional analysis revealed a 65.2 % increase in cytochrome P450 abundance, along with elevated expression of acetyltransferases, dehalogenases, and d

Sodium thiosulfate attenuates liver injury in a rat model of sepsis by modulating ferroptosis and oxidative stress.

Sepsis is a dysregulated immune response to infection that can present with a pro-inflammatory endotype in which the ischemia/reperfusion injury leads to excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), inflammatory mediators and the activation of cell death mechanisms. Sodium thiosulfate (STS) is a hydrogen sulfide producing agent that could reduce ischemia/reperfusion injuries induced ROS, inflammation and cell death. We used the peritoneal contamination and infection model in adult rats to induce sepsis. Animals from the treatment groups received either Trolox, an antioxidant medicati

Sodium thiosulfate refuels the hepatic antioxidant pool reducing ischemia-reperfusion-induced liver injury.

Ischemia-reperfusion injury is a critical liver condition during hepatic transplantation, trauma, or shock. An ischemic deprivation of antioxidants and energy characterizes liver injury in such cases. In the face of increased reactive oxygen production, hepatocytes are vulnerable to the reperfusion driving ROS generation and multiple cell-death mechanisms. In this study, we investigate the importance of hydrogen sulfide as part of the liver's antioxidant pool and the therapeutic potency of the hydrogen sulfide donors sodium sulfide (Na2S, fast releasing) and sodium thiosulfate (STS, Na2S2O3, s
