Background: A population-based reference interval (RI) of thyroid hormones in pregnancy using a standardized methodology is crucial for clinicians to make accurate diagnoses and important for the comparison of test results obtained from different analytic platforms. Methods: We enrolled 600 healthy Chinese women to obtain longitudinal serum samples across gestation, after exclusion of subjects with antibodies to thyroid peroxidase, thyroglobulin or thyrotropin receptor. Gestational age-specific RIs were constructed by using polynomial regression equations with MLwiN. Results: Free thyroxine (f

BACKGROUND: Patients with recent-onset atrial fibrillation often undergo routine thyroid function screening to rule out thyroid disease as a cause of atrial fibrillation.
METHODS: Patients with recent (< 3 months) onset of documented atrial fibrillation or flutter were enrolled in the Canadian Registry of Atrial Fibrillation from outpatient clinics, emergency departments, and hospital wards across Canada. Seven hundred twenty-six patients underwent baseline thyroid function screening and were assessed for presence of clinical thyroid disease. Serum thyrotropin level (TSH) was measured in 707

INTRODUCTION: Congenital hypothyroidism is the most preventable and treatable cause of mental retardation in newborns and infants. Screening for congenital hypothyroidism in newborns and infants is not a routine practice in our part of the world. This study aimed to find out the prevalence of congenital hypothyroidism among infants undergoing thyroid function test in a tertiary care centre.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was done in the Department of Biochemistry, from laboratory records starting 14th April, 2013 to 13th April, 2020 after obtaining ethical clearance from the Ins

AIM: The etiology of telogen effluvium (TE) includes situations that may cause physiological stress, surgical trauma, inflammatory, infectious, iatrogenic causes, medications and nutritional deficiencies. TE has been associated with iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency and thyroid diseases. In recent years, the use of over-the-counter food supplements containing vitamins and minerals such as biotin, vitamin D, zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and selenium (Se) has been increasing in TE patients. The aim of this study is to investigate whether there are differences in nutritional status, vitamin and m

INTRODUCTION: Over 10 million thyroid function tests (TFTs) are carried out in England each year, most requests coming from primary care. Our previous work showed that only 25% of results for patients being treated with Levothyroxine fell within the TSH/FT4 boundary circumscribing 75% of untreated individuals. This study aimed to investigate further the differences in thyroid hormone levels, taking into account both diagnostic code and amounts prescribed.
METHODS: Using a city-wide population record, we analysed TSH/FT4 simultaneous results from 47,869 consecutive diagnosed hypothyroid indivi

BACKGROUND: Thyroid dysfunction (TD) is commonly found in people living with HIV infection (PLHIV) and is exacerbated by ART. While TD is documented in PLHIV, its prevalence in Rwanda remains underexplored. This study investigated thyroid dysfunction in HIV-positive patients on ART at Matyazo Health Centre, Butare, Rwanda. The study aimed to assess the prevalence and distribution of thyroid function test (TFT) abnormalities among HIV-positive individuals receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) at Matyazo Health Centre, Rwanda.

A prospective longitudinal study of thyroid function was conducted in 180 consecutive admissions to an acute geriatric unit. The rest strategy included assay of TSH and TRH testing when appropriate. On admission TSH was suppressed (less than 0.1 mU/l) in 17 patients (9.4%) and elevated (greater than 4.0 mU/l) in 8 (4.4%). Follow-up of these initial abnormalities showed resolution in almost all cases. Our findings suggest that acute illness may interfere with the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, causing either temporary suppression or stimulation of TSH release. Although no new cases of thy

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormones play a pivotal role in regulating metabolic processes, including liver metabolism. The interplay between thyroid function and liver enzymes is complex, with thyroid dysfunction potentially impacting liver function. The relationship between thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and liver function parameters is particularly noteworthy, especially in areas like North Karnataka, India, where dietary and environmental factors may impact thyroid disorders.
AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The principal objective of this research is to explore the association between TSH levels an

OBJECTIVES: The thyroid gland produces hormones that have significant influence on carbohydrate metabolism; its disorders may affect carbohydrate metabolism in type 2 diabetic patients (T2DM) more than the non-diabetic (NDM) patients as reported in various studies. We determined the spectrum of thyroid function tests (TFTs) profile among T2DM in our rural health facility.
METHODS: T2DM patients and NDM patients were recruited for the study. The age, educational level, occupation, marital status, and duration of diabetes were extracted from interviewer's administered questionnaire. The weight,

Background: International guidelines recommend that the indication to perform thyroid function testing during pregnancy is based on the presence of risk factors for thyroid function test abnormalities. However, the discriminative ability of currently recommended risk factors is questionable. To inform on an update of the American Thyroid Association Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Thyroid Disease in Preconception, Pregnancy, and the Postpartum, we aimed to systematically review the literature to evaluate evidence for current risk factors and potential novel ones for thyroid func

Several studies have suggested that some endocrine disruptors such as synthetic phenols, parabens and phthalates may disrupt thyroid hormone signaling and associated negative feed-backs with the central hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis. Therefore, we investigated urinary paraben and blood thyroid hormone levels in the Taiwanese population. Our sample comprised 264 adults (aged 18-97 years) and 75 minors (aged 7-17 years) from Taiwan Environmental Survey for Toxicants 2013. Urinary levels of methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), and butylparaben (BuP) were asses

The United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued multiple statements and guidelines since 2015 on the topic of thyroid function testing in babies and children through 3 years old after receiving iodinated contrast media for medical imaging exams. In April 2023, the FDA adjusted this recommendation to target babies and young children younger than 4 years of age who have a history of prematurity, very low birth weight, or underlying conditions which affect thyroid gland function, largely in response to solid arguments from expert statements from the American College of Radiol

Background The relationship between growth hormone (GH)-replacement therapy and the thyroid axis in GH-deficient (GHD) children remains controversial. Furthermore, there have been few reports regarding non-GHD children. We aimed to determine the effect of GH therapy on thyroid function in GHD and non-GHD children and to assess whether thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation test is helpful for the identification of central hypothyroidism before GH therapy. Methods We retrospectively analyzed data from patients that started GH therapy between 2005 and 2015. The free thyroxine (FT4) and

OBJECTIVE: To present the rare case of a patient who developed destructive thyroiditis accompanied by transient thyrotoxicosis resulting from infliximab therapy for the treatment of psoriasis.
METHODS: The clinical presentation and management of a case with infliximab-associated thyroiditis is described with a brief review of the literature.
RESULTS: A 57-year-old male who suffered from psoriasis was treated with infliximab therapy for 4 years. Thyroid function tests were normal before infliximab therapy. When the patient presented in our clinic, he had thyrotoxicosis and was using propylthi

Results of routine thyroid function tests in heavy cocaine abusers at the time of treatment admission were not statistically different from normal values for our laboratory or from a similar group of other substance abuse patients in treatment. This suggests that heavy cocaine use per se does not affect thyroid function. Therefore, if the thyroid function tests are abnormal in a cocaine abuser, then a true thyroid dysfunction should be considered and completely evaluated. In addition, nonspecific alterations in thyroid function tests in nonthyroidal illnesses should be kept in mind.

BACKGROUND: A limited number of epidemiological studies have attempted to assess thyroid function in the general population of iodine-sufficient countries. The aim of the present study was to determine the underlying thyroid diseases responsible for abnormal thyroid function detected by a general health checkup system in Japan, and to characterize the lipid metabolism in subjects found to have thyroid dysfunction.
METHODS: Serum thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine, anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb), anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb), and TSH-binding inhibitor immunoglobulins (TBII)

BACKGROUND: Amiodarone can cause liver and thyroid toxicity, but little is known about compliance with laboratory tests to evaluate liver and thyroid function among ambulatory patients who are dispensed amiodarone.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to identify the proportion of ambulatory patients who had liver aminotransferase and thyroid function tests during amiodarone therapy. Secondary objectives were to (1) describe factors associated with receipt of laboratory tests and (2) determine the accuracy of administrative data for assessing aminotransferase and thyroid functi

There are clinical and laboratory associations between thyroid and liver disease. Patients with chronic liver disease may have thyroiditis, hyperthyroidism, or hypothyroidism. Occasionally, alcoholics with active cirrhosis will show eye signs or laboratory evidence of hyperthyroidism, and yet be euthyroid on further testing. Patients with subacute thyroiditis or hyperthyroidism may have abnormalities in liver function tests which return to normal as the thyroid condition improves. In similar fashion, patients with acute or chronic liver disease may have changes in thyroid function tests which

Inherited or acquired variations in the serum concentrations of TBG, TTR or albumin are rather common. Clinical studies have shown that most patients with transport protein variations were referred for thyroid testing because of incidentally detected "unusual" thyroid function tests. Although, usually no palpable thyroid abnormalities were found, the interpretation of these unexpected thyroid function tests resulted very often in inappropriate treatment with surgery, 131-iodine, antithyroid drugs as well as T4-replacement therapy. The clinical impact in the interpretation and diagnosis of thyr
