BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is an inherited sequence variant in TP53 characterized by the early onset of various core malignancies including adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC), sarcomas, breast cancer, leukemias, and central nervous system tumors. We present a case of a patient with LFS who developed endocrine neoplasms not classically seen in LFS in addition to developing ACC.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old nonbinary individual assigned female at birth with a history of LFS complicated by osteosarcoma of the jaw was incidentally found to have thyroid and sellar masses on surveil

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To guide the clinician in the diagnostic evaluation of endocrine neoplasms, to distinguish between benign and malignant and determine when surgical referral is indicated.
RECENT FINDINGS: Thyroid nodules are uncommon but malignant in as many as 27% of patients. Fine needle aspiration should be considered in adolescents, in which accuracy is as high as 90%; surgical resection should be undertaken in all preadolescents (<13 years) with a thyroid nodule. Prognosis for most primary thyroid malignancies is favorable. Primary hyperparathyroidism is rare and due to an adenoma in u

We describe the case of a 93-year-old woman with a giant thyroid neoplasm related to dyspnea and dysphagia. The patient visited our hospital for loss of appetite and dyspnea after bronchitis. Computed tomography revealed a massively enlarged thyroid gland compressing the trachea and esophagus. Cytological examination of the thyroid gland revealed features suggestive of hyalinizing trabecular tumor, a low-grade neoplasm. Videofluoroscopic swallowing examination demonstrated significant food retention and reflux in the esophagus, likely caused by upper esophageal compression. Despite recommendin

A patient with thyrotoxicosis due to a triiodothyronine (T3)-secreting autonomous adenoma is described. The histmorphology of the neoplasms was similar to other neoplasms previously reported. Ultrastructural features of the adenoma are compatible with a very actively secreting follicular cell and are best compared with the ultrastructure of a diffuse toxic goiter. Distinctive features that separate toxic adenomas from various thyroid carcinomas and normal thyroid parenchyma are discussed.

Tumor-to-tumor metastasis in thyroid neoplasms is exceedingly uncommon. Two unusual cases of breast carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma metastatic to follicular variant papillary carcinoma are reported. On histologic sections, the donor tumor cells infiltrated the substance of the recipient tumor and the angiolymphatic channels, but the bulk of metastatic tumor was confined within the thyroid carcinoma. Immunohistochemical stains as well as molecular studies confirmed the origin of both donor tumors, as well as the diagnosis of follicular variant of papillary carcinoma in the recipient tumors.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) stimulates DNA synthesis and proliferation of thyroid cells in culture and may have an important role in the regulation of normal and neoplastic thyroid cell growth. We therefore studied paired normal and neoplastic thyroid tissue from eight patients for the presence of EGF receptors using a radioreceptor assay. 125I EGF binds to a particulate membrane fraction from both normal and neoplastic thyroid tissue with high affinity (dissociation constant ranged from 0.5 to 16.7 nmol/L). The binding is saturable, and maximal binding is achieved within 40 minutes at 37 de

Long-term adverse health conditions, including secondary malignant neoplasms, are common in childhood cancer survivors. Although mortality attributable to secondary malignancies declined over the past decades, the risk for developing a solid secondary malignant neoplasm did not. Endocrine-related malignancies are among the most common secondary malignant neoplasms observed in childhood cancer survivors. In this systematic review, we describe risk factors for secondary malignant neoplasms of the breast and thyroid, since these are the most common secondary endocrine-related malignancies in chil

A clear cell neoplasm of the thyroid with indistinguishable light microscopic features and similar tinctorial reactions for lipid and glycogen to those of clear cell renal carcinoma is described. However, electron microscopic examination disclosed cytoplasmic tonofibrils and keratohyaline granules as well as suggestive transitions between the tumor cells and acinar epithelium. The former appear to represent helpful "markers" for the distinction of this type of thyroid cancer from parathyroid or metastatic renal clear cell tumors. There is some evidence that not all clear cell thyroid neoplasms

The X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) is the most potent of the inhibitors of apoptosis, a group of related caspase inhibitors. X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis expression correlates with radio- and chemoresistance and clinical aggressiveness in certain tumors. XIAP expression was examined in 106 specimens from neoplastic and other thyroid disorders, which underwent citrate-based antigen retrieval and staining with monoclonal anti-XIAP. Normal thyroid was XIAP-negative. Of 35 papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs), 29 (83%) stained variably in intensity and/or extent. An insular carcinoma was

BACKGROUND: Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is a rare event. Rectal cancer to primary thyroid neoplasm metastasis is extremely rare. Herein, we reported a case of metastatic rectal adenocarcinoma to a papillary thyroid carcinoma. The incidence and clinicopathological characteristics of metastatic colorectal cancer to a thyroid gland neoplasm were described, and the pertinent literature was reviewed.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old female patient had curative treatment of initial rectal adenocarcinoma in 2012, and was found to have lung metastases by follow-up CT scan 3 years later. In 2018, she wa

Hyalinizing trabecular tumour (HTT) is a rare thyroid neoplasm of follicular cell origin characterised by a trabecular growth pattern and prominent intratrabecular and intertrabecular hyalinisation. These peculiar histological features allow the prompt recognition of this neoplasm in surgical specimens. However, cytological diagnosis of HTT remains elusive and misleading because of overlapping characteristics with other thyroid tumours, particularly papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) and the newly described non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papilla

Thyroid carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is a rare tumor of the thyroid gland or adjacent soft tissues of the neck. Given the comparatively good prognosis of CASTLE, it is crucial to distinguish this neoplasm from other more aggressive thyroid neoplasms that can have similar or overlapping cytomorphological features. However, there is little information about the cytomorphology of CASTLE available in the literature. Here we report the cytomorphology and histology of thyroid CASTLE in a 52-year-old woman and present a review of the literature.

One hundred consecutive patients were studied at the Auckland Hospital thyroid clinic over a two year period 1974 to 1976, who subsequently had surgical excision of a solitary cold nodule. Thyroid carcinoma was present in 17 percent, adenoma in 44 percent, colloid nodules in 25 percent and a thyroid cyst in 14 percent. Although thyroid neoplasms were significantly more frequent in patients under 40, other clinical or scan features analysed were not predictive of carcinoma or neoplasm.

The anterior neck is an unusual location for lipomas. Cervical lipomas can be mistaken for non-functioning thyroid nodules. We report eight cases from our files diagnosed by fine needle aspiration (FNA). Our purpose is to call attention to this simple technique in establishing an accurate diagnosis and how it can contribute to better patient management by avoiding unnecessary thyroid suppressive therapy and/or surgery. We advocate using FNA as the initial diagnostic test on palpable masses in the neck. The differential diagnosis must include thyroid lipomatosis, thyrolipoma or adenolipoma, amy

Primary thyroid angiosarcoma is a very rare and extremely aggressive mesenchymal malignant neoplasm showing morphological and immunophenotypic evidence of endothelial cell differentiation. Early diagnosis of this tumor along with radical thyroidectomy followed by postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy are essential for adequate management of the patient. Currently available data on diagnosis and treatment options of this neoplasm are limited because it is a rare disease in endocrine organs. Raising awareness regarding its diagnosis can help to optimize the treatment and to improve the sur

The carcinogenic potential of nelfinavir mesylate (nelfinavir) was evaluated in a 2-year oral (gavage) study on Sprague-Dawley rats at dose levels of 0 (control), 0 (vehicle control), 100, 300 and 1000 mg/kg per day. At the end of the treatment, increased incidences of thyroid follicular cell hyperplasia and neoplasms were observed at 300 (males) and 1000 mg/kg per day (both sexes). There were no other treatment-related effects and no tumors at other sites. Results from previous studies indicated a number of effects in the liver and thyroid, as well as metabolic profiles that suggested nelfina

Preoperative cytologic diagnosis of solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma (SEP) presents a challenge to cytopathologists because this tumor rarely occurs as a primary thyroid malignant neoplasm. In this report, we provide the first description of liquid-based cytomorphologic findings of SEP observed on fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the thyroid. A 56-year-old woman with a history of Hashimoto thyroiditis presented with a growing nodule in the thyroid. The liquid-based preparation obtained from FNAB showed numerous dispersed plasmacytoid cells with occasional loosely cohesive aggregates

Primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a rare, aggressive neoplasm of the thyroid gland that occurs most frequently in older women. We describe a 60-year-old woman who presented to our hospital with a primarily painless, progressively enlarging neck swelling over the previous four months. Imaging showed an enlarged thyroid gland and mass effect in the surrounding neck soft tissue. Fine needle aspiration revealed a predominance of lymphoid cells to suggest that this hypothesized mass was a thyroid neoplasm. Biopsy of the thyroid gland confirmed non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the thyroid. She was treated wi

Struma ovarii has elicited considerable interest because of its many unique features since Ludwig Pick first elucidated its relationship to teratoma in the early part of the 20th century. In this article, we report 3 cases of papillary and 1 of follicular thyroid carcinoma; 2 of these cases were associated with mature cystic teratoma. Metastases occurred in 2 patients, and 1 died of neoplasm. In regard to the occurrence of thyroid-type carcinoma in struma ovarii, precise terminology should be used, and the expression malignant struma ovarii was avoided as a diagnostic term. Upon review of the

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most differentiated malignant thyroid neoplasm. Local metastases of PTC commonly occur in the regional lymph nodes, while distant metastases are mainly to the lung and bone. The case of a patient with PTC who presented with swelling of the parotid gland and neck, mimicking a primary parotid neoplasm, is presented herein. This case is unique due to the unexpected initial presentation of PTC with no signs of disease in the thyroid gland.
