Prospective assessment of the etiology of acute febrile illness after a tick bite in Slovenia.

A prospective study established the etiology of febrile illnesses in residents of Slovenia that occurred within 6 weeks after a tick bite. A combination of laboratory and clinical criteria identified 64 (49.2%) of 130 patients as having confirmed, probable, or possible cases of tickborne disease during 1995 and 1996. Of the 130 patients, 36 (27.7%) had laboratory evidence of tickborne encephalitis, all of whom had clinically confirmed disease. Evidence of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato was identified in 26 patients; 10 (7.7%) had confirmed Lyme borreliosis. Of 22 patients with

Determining the duration of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) attachment to tick-bite victims.

The duration of tick attachment is one factor associated with risk for human infection caused by several tick-borne pathogens. We measured tick engorgement indices at known time intervals after tick attachment and used these indices to determine the length of time that ticks were attached to tick-bite victims in selected Rhode Island and Pennsylvania communities where the agents of Lyme disease and human babesiosis occur. The total body length and width as well as the length and width of the scutum were measured on nymphal and adult female Ixodes scapularis Say removed from laboratory animals

[Chronic lymphocytic meningitis with polytopic involvement of the nervous system (after tick bite?)].

After an introductory description of the terminology, the individual experiences of 65 patients with chronic lymphocytic radicular myelo-meningitis after tick bite are reported with reference to the literature. The finding of the cerebrospinal fluid in the lymphoplasmocytic meningitis together with radicular and regional pains, and a one-or two-sided peripheral facial nerve paresis represents the nucleus syndrome of the illness, which usually progresses as meningopolyneuritis. The pathogen, probably a virus, could not yet be isolated. The treatment is purely symptomatical with corticosteroids

[Results of a prospective standardized study of 30 patients with chronic neurological and cognitive disorders after tick bites].

OBJECTIVE: Patients with chronic neurological disorders and cognitive impairment after tick bites are difficult to manage despite standard antibiotic therapy for Lyme disease. We wanted to correctly assess the disorders. METHODS: Thirty patients were hospitalized for a standardized evaluation of their disorders: clinical examination, biological and serological studies, cerebral MRI, CSF study, neurophysiological exams, and neuropsychological evaluation of cognitive functions. RESULTS: Clinical and biological results were non informative. We observed significant CSF abnormalities (64%), MRI F

Tick bites and Lyme disease in an endemic setting: problematic use of serologic testing and prophylactic antibiotic therapy.

CONTEXT: The use of serologic testing to diagnose Lyme disease (LD) is a source of controversy. Expert recommendations also discourage the routine use of antibiotic therapy for prophylaxis of LD following tick bites, but the extent to which physicians in endemic areas have adopted these recommendations is not known. OBJECTIVE: To assess the pattern of use of serologic testing and antibiotic therapy for tick bites and LD and associated charges for management in an endemic area. DESIGN: Active surveillance of patient-physician encounters for tick bites and LD. SETTING: Primary care practices

Epidemiology of tick bites and borreliosis in children attending kindergarten or so-called "forest kindergarten" in southwest Germany.

The so-called "forest kindergartens" have been increasingly popular in Germany since the beginning of the 1990s. These are nurseries located in forested areas where children spend all-season full-time outdoors. Fifty-three kindergartens in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany participated in this study. In a prospective clinical cohort study, the child's personal data, history, protective parental habits concerning tick bites, number of tick bites, and cases of borreliosis were recorded monthly (March-October 2004) using a questionnaire. Altogether, 1,707 children of 25 "forest kindergarten

Entomologic and demographic correlates of anti-tick saliva antibody in a prospective study of tick bite subjects in Westchester County, New York.

We measured anti-tick saliva antibody (ATSA) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using whole sonicated Ixodes dammini salivary glands as antigen in subjects with 1) a recent and confirmed I. dammini (n = 100) or Dermacentor variabilis bite (n = 3), 2) erythema migrans (n = 15), 3) late-stage Lyme disease (n = 4), and 4) normal controls without a history of tick bites (n = 5). Tick bite subjects had three ATSA determinations over approximately six weeks. On the first ATSA measurement at a mean +/- SD of 18.5 +/- 19.8 hr after removal of the tick, the subjects bitten by I. dammini had a mean AT

Behavioural and environmental factors associated with the risk of human tick bites in the Grippenet/Covidnet cohort in France.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are one of the most important vectors of infectious disease pathogens in Europe, posing threats to human health. However, human exposure to tick bites and associated factors remains poorly documented, despite its importance to better mitigate the risk of tick-borne diseases. Current participatory datasets report information from individuals being bitten by ticks, while information on exposed but non-bitten individuals is scarce. Here, by collecting data on exposed individuals from a nationwide participatory surveillance cohort in France, we assessed the risk of self-reporting

Clinical Management Strategies for Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Induced by Tick Bites: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) has a high mortality rate, and diagnosis and treatment options for SFTS-associated encephalopathy/encephalitis(SFTSAE) are limited. CASE REPORT A 79-year-old male farmer developed progressive dyspnea and productive cough 72 hours after tick exposure, accompanied by persistent high-grade fever (38.9°C). Following failed empirical antimicrobial interventions, he was transferred to our institution. At the same time, the local disease control center diagnosed him with fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). Initial evaluations at p

The relevance of tick bites to the production of IgE antibodies to the mammalian oligosaccharide galactose-α-1,3-galactose.

BACKGROUND: In 2009, we reported a novel form of delayed anaphylaxis to red meat that is related to serum IgE antibodies to the oligosaccharide galactose-α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal). Most of these patients had tolerated meat for many years previously. The implication is that some exposure in adult life had stimulated the production of these IgE antibodies. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate possible causes of this IgE antibody response, focusing on evidence related to tick bites, which are common in the region where these reactions occur. METHODS: Serum assays were carried out with biotiny

Risk factors for α-Gal syndrome: A case-control study exploring the role of tick bites in French Guiana.

α-Gal Syndrome (AGS) is an IgE-mediated allergy to galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-Gal), a carbohydrate found in non-primate mammalian tissues. AGS manifests as delayed anaphylactic reactions following the consumption of mammalian meat or exposure to products containing α-Gal. Recent studies confirm tick bites may be a key sensitizing factor. This study aimed to investigate tick bites and other potential risk factors for AGS in French Guiana. A retrospective case-control study was conducted at the Cayenne Hospital Center between January 2021 and October 2022. Cases were defined as adults with cli

Association between lone star tick bites and increased alpha-gal sensitization: evidence from a prospective cohort of outdoor workers.

BACKGROUND: Alpha-gal is an oligosaccharide implicated in delayed anaphylaxis following red meat consumption. Exposure to tick bites has been correlated with development of an allergic response to alpha-gal. However, evidence prospectively linking exposure to a single tick species and an immune response to alpha-gal is lacking. METHODS: We used serum samples from a prior study cohort of outdoor workers in North Carolina, USA, with high exposure to the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, to prospectively evaluate the relationship between tick bites and anti-alpha-gal IgE antibodies. RESULTS

Relationship between tick bites and the seroprevalence of Babesia microti and Anaplasma phagocytophila (previously Ehrlichia sp.) in blood donors.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases, particularly babesiosis and ehrlichiosis, represent recently emerging infections. Despite an increased recognition of the threat tick-borne agents pose to blood safety, our understanding of the prevalence and transmissibility of these agents in blood donors is limited. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Babesia microti and Anaplasma phagocytophila (previously Ehrlichia sp.) seroprevalence was determined in random Connecticut and Wisconsin donors, and subsequently in Connecticut donors reporting tick bites. In the interim, a postcard survey regarding tick bites during t

One Health tick bite exposure biomarkers against Ixodes ricinus salivary peptides.

The changing distributions and activity patterns of tick populations underscore the urgent need for enhanced surveillance and risk assessment strategies for ticks and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) affecting humans and animals. Biomarkers of exposure to tick salivary peptides can be used to identify tick bite history and to monitor tick species distributions. Here, we derived peptides from previously identified immunogenic proteins, namely IrCalreticulin, IrLip1, and IrSPI. Bioinformatic predictive analysis of 3D structure and computed docking strength were used to identify candidate peptides base

Consultations in general practice related to a tick bite episode in mainland France in 2023-2024.

BACKGROUND: The emergence and spread of TBDs present major challenges. Exposure to tick bites in mainland France is mainly documented through local studies or citizen science projects. According to the 2024 French national survey, about 15% bitten individuals consult a healthcare professional. National-level data from general practice are needed to better describe tick bite epidemiology. MAIN OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of patients consulting general practitioners (GPs) for a tick bite and to describe their characteristics, their management and the context of the bite. METHOD: We co

From Tick Bite to Broken Heart: A Case of Stress Cardiomyopathy Induced by Severe Babesiosis.

Babesiosis can present with a wide range of clinical manifestations, from asymptomatic infection to severe, life-threatening illness. We report the case of a 74-year-old woman with severe babesiosis complicated by Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. She presented with fever, chills, fatigue, and shortness of breath two weeks after a tick bite of unknown attachment duration. Initial testing for tick-borne illnesses, including Borrelia, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and Babesia, was negative. As her condition progressed, she developed hemolytic anemia, and a repeat peripheral blood smear revealed 4.5% parasitemia
