Sterile nodular panniculitis with lung and lymph node involvement in a Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altica).

A 2- to 4-year-old uncastrated male Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altica) bred in a local wild animal park presented with generalized clinical signs including abdominal pain, fever, lethargy, and anorexia, along with subcutaneous nodules along the trunk. The patient subsequently died of chronic, progressive dyspnea despite 45 days of antibiotic treatment. At necropsy, mesenteric fat inflammation and multiple subcutaneous, peritoneal, and intraabdominal nodules were observed. The lungs demonstrated congestion and heavy coagulation, and necrotic foci were observed on the cut surface. Histopath

Fatal presumed tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) envenomation in a cat with measurement of venom and antivenom concentration.

A fatal outcome of a presumed tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) envenomation in a cat is described. Detectable venom components and antivenom concentrations in serum from clotted and centrifuged whole blood and urine were measured using a sensitive and specific ELISA. The cat presented in a paralysed state with a markedly elevated serum CK but with normal clotting times. The cat was treated with intravenous fluids and received two vials of equine whole IgG bivalent (tiger and brown snake) antivenom. Despite treatment the cat's condition did not improve and it died 36 h post-presentation. Serum c

Dynamic visual cues induce jaw opening and closing by tiger beetles during pursuit of prey.

In dynamic locomotory contexts, visual cues often trigger adaptive behaviour by the viewer, yet studies investigating how animals determine impending collisions typically employ either stationary viewers or objects. Here, we describe a dynamic situation of visually guided prey pursuit in which both impending prey contact and escape elicit observable adaptive behaviours in the pursuer, a predatory beetle. We investigated which visual cues may independently control opening and closing of the beetle's jaws during chases of prey dummies. Jaw opening and closing typically occur when prey is within

Tetralogy of Fallot and atrial septal defect in a white Bengal Tiger cub (Panthera tigris tigris).

A 3-week-old female white Bengal Tiger cub (Panthera tigris tigris) presented with acute onset tachypnoea, cyanosis and hypothermia. The cub was severely hypoxaemic with a mixed acid-base disturbance. Echocardiography revealed severe pulmonic stenosis, right ventricular hypertrophy, high membranous ventricular septal defect and an overriding aorta. Additionally, an atrial septal defect was found on necropsy, resulting in the final diagnosis of Tetralogy of Fallot with an atrial septal defect (a subclass of Pentalogy of Fallot). This report is the first to encompass arterial blood gas analysis,

Laboratory evaluation of alternative control methods against the false tiger, Monosteira unicostata (Hemiptera: Tingidae).

BACKGROUND: Monosteira unicostata is an important pest of almond tree in the Mediterranean region requiring control methods alternative to synthetic pesticides. The efficacy of kaolin, azadirachtin and potassium salts of fatty acids combined with thyme essential oil against adults and fourth instar nymphs of this tingid was evaluated in laboratory assays. RESULTS: In no choice assays with adults, kaolin significantly increased mortality compared to control (42.7% versus 23.8%) and reduced the oviposition of females (11.8 versus 35.3 eggs), the feeding activity (169.6 versus 471.2 excrements)

First isolation and identification of Elizabethkingia meningoseptica from cultured tiger frog, Rana tigerina rugulosa.

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica has been recognised as an occasional but serious opportunistic bacterial pathogen to human beings. Recently, it was frequently isolated from tiger frog, Rana tigerina rugulosa, with cataract disease, which is the most common disease of unknown aetiology of frogs in Hainan, China. The purpose of this study was to identify and characterise the bacterial strains isolated from the recent outbreaks of cataract disease in farmed tiger frog in Hainan, China, and to evaluate their pathogenicity to the frog and their sensitivity to 20 chemotherapeutic agents. The 16S rRNA

Neurofilaments are prominent in bullfrog olfactory axons but are rarely seen in those of the tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum.

Bullfrog olfactory axons show variable numbers (0-29) of structurally typical neurofilaments (NFs) about 10 nm in diameter. In studies tracking these NFs through serial sections of axons in cross section, they were found to be discontinuous, with a calculated average length of about 118 microns. In contrast to olfactory axons in bullfrogs, those of the tiger salamander Ambystoma trigrinum rarely show NFs. To be certain that the absence of NFs is a specific characteristic of olfactory axons, pieces of salamander spinal cord, optic nerve, and sciatic nerve were examined and found to contain typi

Changes in the electrical properties of olfactory epithelial cells in the tiger salamander after olfactory nerve transection.

Transection of olfactory nerves causes degeneration of receptor neurons in the olfactory epithelium, followed by generation of new receptor neurons. We have carried out intracellular recordings to document changes in epithelial cell populations during receptor neuron degeneration and regrowth at 1, 2, and 4 weeks following olfactory nerve transection in the salamander. Receptor neurons were greatly reduced in numbers at 1 week, and gradually returned to the normal percentage of intracellular penetrations by 4 weeks. They had a resting membrane potential between -30 and -50 mV and high input re

Temporary and selective anosmia in tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) caused by chemical treatment of the olfactory epithelium.

Tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) were trained to respond to two dissimilar odorants (i.e., cyclohexanone, dimethyl disulfide) but not to a third odorant (n-butanol). When the training criterion was met, the animals were anesthetized and given nasal lavages of saline or odorants in saline. Lavage with cyclohexanone decreased responding to cyclohexanone but not dimethyl disulfide, and vice-versa, in later behavioral tests. Likewise, ethyl acetoacetate lavage produced selective response decrements to cyclohexanone. Lavage with n-butanol had no effect on responding to presentations of either

Effect of Adult Male Diet on Mating Propensity and Competitiveness of the Asian Tiger Mosquito (Aedes albopictus).

The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is a major vector of arboviruses such as dengue, Zika and chikungunya, posing significant public health risks worldwide. Understanding male mating performance is crucial for optimizing control methods such as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). The aim of the current study was to investigate the influence of adult male diet on male Ae. albopictus mating success and competitiveness. Three adult diets were tested: 10% sugar solution, 10% molasses solution and 8% sugar solution enriched with 2% hydrolyzed yeast. Results revealed that males fed a molasse

Glaucoma in a Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) Maintained Under Human Care: A Case Report.

Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is rarely recognized in large felids, yet it may cause severe vision loss and chronic pain. This case report presents the ophthalmological evaluation of a four-year-old Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) maintained under human care that exhibited signs of visual impairment and altered sensorium. Under neuroleptic analgesia, clinical findings included bilateral convergent strabismus, persistent mydriasis, pathologically elevated intraocular pressure (48-52 mmHg), extensive map-like retinopathy, and focal retinal degeneration, supporting a diagnosis of ad

[Expansion of the Asian tiger mosquito and associated arboviral diseases in Europe: effects of climate change and surveillance].

The summer of 2025 and its historic chikungunya outbreak marked a turning point in the way we approach mosquito-borne viral diseases in Europe, and in particular those which depends on Aedes albopictus, the Asian tiger mosquito, for their transmission. These arboviral infections show a pronounced dependence on global change, owing to complex interactions between very different organisms. Mosquitoes, in particular, are highly sensitive to the effects of climate change. In this context, Aedes albopictus, an invasive species showing substantial adaptability and robustness, continues to expand acr

Molecular characterisation and histopathological analysis of canine distemper virus in a Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni).

IMPORTANCE: Canine distemper virus (CDV) has a broad host range, spanning mammals of the order Carnivora and other orders, often proving fatal. The detection of CDV in a Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) in Malaysia in 2019 marks the first such case diagnosed in Malayan tigers, suggesting possible exposure from domestic animals or wildlife reservoirs. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe histological manifestations and characterise the CDV strain in the tiger to determine its molecular epidemiology and postulate viral pathogenicity. METHODS: Histopathology characterisation of the in

Oral administration of GnRH via a cricket vehicle stimulates spermiation in tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum).

More than 50% of caudates are threatened with extinction and are in need of ex-situ breeding programs to support conservation efforts and species recovery. Unfortunately, many salamander populations under human care can experience reproductive failure, primarily due to missing environmental cues necessary for breeding. Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) are a useful suite of techniques for overcoming or bypassing these missing environmental cues to promote breeding. Exogenous hormones are used to stimulate natural breeding behaviors or gamete expression for in-vitro fertilization or bio

Effects of Intermittent and Chronic Hypoxia on Fish Size and Nutrient Metabolism in Tiger Puffer (Takifugu rubripes).

Intermittent and chronic hypoxia are common stresses to marine fish, but the different responses of fish to intermittent and chronic hypoxia have not been well-known. In this study, tiger puffers were farmed in normoxia conditions (NO, 6.5 ± 0.5 mg/L), intermittent hypoxia (IH, 6.5 ± 0.5 mg/L in the day and 3.5 ± 0.5 mg/L in the night), or choric hypoxia (CH, 3.5 ± 0.5 mg/L) conditions for 4 weeks, after which the growth, nutrient metabolism and three hifα isoforms expression were measured. Both intermittent and chronic hypoxia decreased the fish growth and visceral weight but increased the fe

A nearly complete database on the records and ecology of the rarest boreal tiger moth from 1840s to 2020.

Global environmental changes may cause dramatic insect declines but over century-long time series of certain species' records are rarely available for scientific research. The Menetries' Tiger Moth (Arctia menetriesii) appears to be the most enigmatic example among boreal insects. Although it occurs throughout the entire Eurasian taiga biome, it is so rare that less than 100 specimens were recorded since its original description in 1846. Here, we present the database, which contains nearly all available information on the species' records collected from 1840s to 2020. The data on A. menetriesi

Detection and molecular characterisation of intestinal parasites in the South China tiger Panthera tigris amoyensis (Hilzheimer).

Parasitic infections of the South China tigers in the Meihua Mountains have not been explored previously. Faeces of 22 South China tigers from the China Tiger Park in the Meihua Mountains were examined. Eggs of ascaridoid nematodes and oocysts of coccidia were detected by Mini-FLOTAC assay. Morphological observation and molecular characterisation of the oocysts were carried out. The prevalence of Toxascaris leonina (von Linstow, 1902) was 18% (4/22), and the highest egg per gram (EPG) count in the faeces was 27,150. The prevalence of Cystoisospora sp. was 45% (1 0/22) and the highest oocysts p
