PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Female dysfunctional voiding (FDV) is an intermittent and/or fluctuating flow rate due to involuntary intermittent contractions of the periurethral striated or levator muscles during voiding in neurologically normal women. Despite its codified definition, because of variable causes, there is a lack of established diagnostic criteria and management. The aim of this study is to give a comprehensive, brief review of the most recent progress in the diagnosis and management of FDV.
RECENT FINDINGS: Currently, there is the need to shed light on several issues in FDV, such as the

Natural resources are under worldwide pressure, water and sustainable energy being the paramount issues. Haemodialysis, a water-voracious and energy-hungry healthcare procedure, thoughtlessly wastes water and leaves a heavy carbon footprint. In our service, 100 000 L/week of previously discarded reverse osmosis reject water--water which satisfies all World Health Organisation criteria for potable (drinking) water--no longer drains to waste but is captured for reuse. Reject water from the hospital-based dialysis unit provides autoclave steam for instrument sterilization, ward toilet flushing, j

PURPOSE: There is a scarcity of literature, and prevalent misconceptions about constipation in India.
METHODS: A literature search in PubMed was conducted with regard to epidemiology, clinical features, and management of constipation. Special emphasis was paid to functional constipation and refractory constipation. English language studies available full text over the last 25 years were considered and relevant information was extracted.
CONCLUSIONS: Estimated prevalence of constipation is 3% among toddlers and pre-school children worldwide and 95%, of them are considered functional. A carefu

UNLABELLED: Constipation, faecal incontinence, soiling and difficult toilet training remain significant problems in children with Hirschsprung's disease after corrective surgery. Chronic defecation problems can have various negative implications. At the University Medical Centre Nijmegen, a multidisciplinary behavioural treatment was developed to treat defecation problems. In this paper, a prospective controlled study is presented concerning the effect of this treatment upon children suffering from chronic defecation problems following corrective surgery for Hirschsprung's disease. The effect

Although most patients with operated Hirschsprung's disease (HD) have good continence in adulthood, a majority have postoperative defection problems during school age. Persistence of chronic constipation and/or incontinence may have considerable consequences for psychosocial development, parent-child interactions, quality of life, and the child's general condition. Considering these consequences, it is important to treat these problems as early as possible. From a biopsychosocial view, we developed a multidisciplinary treatment aimed at resolving defecation problems by teaching the child bowel

Clinical experiences with some fourteen young children (under 3 1/2 years) suffering from pervasive developmental disorder led to the design of an outpatient treatment program. The conceptual basis for the program was facilitated by two important changes in theory. The first was a shift in our understanding of infancy, based on observations rather than reconstruction from adult and child analysis; the second was the gradual evolvement in our understanding of this disorder. The treatment program has three components: (1) a prolonged period of parent-child or adult-child interactions aimed at at

Rectal prolapse is not uncommon in the pediatric age group. Occurring more frequently in boys than girls and most often during the period of toilet training, the condition is usually self-limited. Treatment typically consists of nonoperative measures. There are patients, however, in whom operative intervention becomes necessary. Operative procedures described are based largely on adult experience and the most common repairs involve the use of a foreign body (Ripstein procedure) or colonic resection. These procedures are of considerable magnitude and may be attended by significant morbidity. As

Constipation affects around 30% of children and in 95% of cases is functional (FC), a consequence of alterations in digestive tract peristalsis, modulated by the immune and nervous systems, bile acid metabolism, and the gut microbiota. The aim of this review was to assess the role of gut microbiota and the use of probiotics in children with constipation. The current treatment involves education, toilet training, and oral laxatives, effective in only 50% of patients. In chronic FC, the composition of the microbiota is altered, with increased abundance of Bacteroidetes, Enterobacteriaceae, and F

Functional constipation is a common problem in childhood and has a great impact on social, physical, and emotional functioning of affected children and their caregivers. No organic cause of the constipation can be found in approximately 95% of children, defining the "so-called" chronic functional constipation. Its prevalence has been reported to range from 0.7 to 29.6%, with a median of 12%. The diagnosis of functional constipation is exclusively clinical based on the pediatric diagnostic Rome criteria for functional gastrointestinal disorders and does not routinely require laboratory and/or r

Constipation in children is a common health problem affecting 0.7% to 29.6% children across the world. Exact etiology for developing symptoms is not clear in children and the majority is considered to have functional constipation. Alteration of rectal and pelvic floor function through the brain-gut axis seems to play a crucial role in the etiology. The diagnosis is often a symptom-based clinical process. Recently developed Rome III diagnostic criteria looks promising, both in clinical and research fields. Laboratory investigations such as barium enema, colonoscopy, anorectal manometry and colo

Little is known about the levels of continence in children with cerebral palsy and what factors affect this. This study was conducted to determine levels of urine and stool continence in children with cerebral palsy in relation to their learning disability (LD) and mobility. The aim was to enable us to predict level of continence that can be achieved for these children with a given level of learning disability and mobility. Data were obtained from medical notes and by telephone interview on mobility, degree of learning disability and urine and stool continence of 55 children in Southern Derbys

Functional disorders of the distal part of the colon in neonates and infants should be diagnosed by X-ray investigations (defecograms), double-suction biopsies (Erlanger children suction biopsy apparatus), anorectal and sigmoidal manometry and coloscopic functional investigations. 90% of all disorders of the distal colon can be diagnosed by manometric studies, in 40% X-ray investigations will lead to an exact diagnosis, in 12% double suction biopsies and in 10% coloscopic investigations establish the right diagnosis. The double suction biopsy is important for the exclusion of aganglionosis. Ei

INTRODUCTION: Meatal stenosis almost always develops following neonatal circumcision, and it usually does not become apparent until the child is toilet trained. The present study was conducted to determine the value of diagnostic ultrasonography in patients with meatal stenosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive study was performed on 120 patients with meatal stenosis, referred to Naghavi Hospital, Kashan, Iran, from July 2000 to March 2002. Symptoms and findings on physical examination were recorded for every patient, ultrasonography of the urinary tract, and urinalysis and urine culture

Two infants, 7 children and 1 young woman have been surgically treated for ureteral ectopy in the Departments of Paediatrics and of Urology of the Medical University of Pécs over the last 15 years (1974-1989). The girl/boy ratio was 8/2. In girls, who were otherwise toilet-trained with a normal voiding pattern, constant wetting and urinary infection were the leading clinical findings. The site of ureteral drainage was the vestibule in 4 patients, the urethra in 3, the vagina in 1, the prostatic utricle in 1, and it could not be determined in 1 girl. Diagnosis was based on intravenous urography

It is unknown if abnormal anal sphincter function as assessed by anorectal manometry is still present years after resolution of chronic constipation and encopresis. Twenty healthy controls, 12 children with constipation but no encopresis, and 20 children with chronic constipation and encopresis underwent anorectal manometric testing, using intraluminal pressure transducers and a balloon for rectal distention. Anorectal measurements were repeated in the 20 constipated and encopretic children 2.5-4 yr after treatment began; 11 children had recovered for at least 1 yr. The mean values of anal res

Robert, a nearly 12-year-old boy, traveled an hour to see a new pediatrician. Robert's mom told the pediatrician that Robert had not been seen by a doctor for several years because "no one seems to be able to help him with his problem." Robert had been wetting the bed "ever since he was toilet-trained" at age 2 years. Robert wets the bed about 5 out of 7 nights. He never has daytime accidents. He did not have a history of urinary tract infection, dysuria, urgency, or increased frequency of urination. He has daily bowel movements and denied soiling or accidents. Robert's mom said he had "toilet
