Chapter 3: Pathological Features of Coronal Caries.

Pathology is the science of how a tissue changes during the process of the disease. The pathology is of important knowledge for understanding subsequent treatment concepts of a disease. In the cariology field, pathological features of caries are often presented using tooth sections, whereby the sequence and spread can be monitored. It is optimal to describe such changes using thin undecalcified tooth sections as an overview can be given of both enamel demineralization and pulp-dentine reactions. Also, an optimal understanding is achieved if the clinical status of carious lesion activity is kno

Genetic structure and domestication footprints of the tusk, coat color, and ear morphology in East Chinese pigs.

The domestication and artificial selection of wild boars have led to dramatic morphological and behavioral changes, especially in East Chinese (ECN) pigs. Here, we provide insights into the population structure and current genetic diversity of representative ECN pig breeds. We identify a 500-kb region containing six tooth development-relevant genes with almost completely different haplotypes between ECN pigs and Chinese wild boars or European domestic pigs. Notably, the c.195A>G missense mutation in exon 2 of AMBN may cause alterations in its protein structure associated with tusk degradation

Proteoliposomes as matrix vesicles' biomimetics to study the initiation of skeletal mineralization.

During the process of endochondral bone formation, chondrocytes and osteoblasts mineralize their extracellular matrix by promoting the formation of hydroxyapatite (HA) seed crystals in the sheltered interior of membrane-limited matrix vesicles (MVs). Ion transporters control the availability of phosphate and calcium needed for HA deposition. The lipidic microenvironment in which MV-associated enzymes and transporters function plays a crucial physiological role and must be taken into account when attempting to elucidate their interplay during the initiation of biomineralization. In this short m

Studies of dental root surface caries. 2: The role of cementum in root surface caries.

Artificial caries lesions were produced in roots of teeth using an acetate buffer system, when the layer of cementum was either normal in thickness, excessively thickened by hypercementosis, or had been removed completely. The rates of lesion progression were measured in each case using polarized light microscopy to measure lesion depth. Analysis of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) loss during the demineralizing process was carried out. The removal of cementum was found to significantly increase the initial rate of penetration of the lesion into the root, although this rate progressively reduce

Evaluation of Deep Learning for Caries Detection With Fine-Grained Classification and Postprocessing Improvements.

OBJECTIVES: Deep learning methods have been proven to be effective in detecting dental caries in visible light images. However, existing research involves inadequate categories and mainly focuses on local lesion areas. This study aims to use advanced deep learning models to achieve caries detection based on tooth instances (where all teeth in images are detected) and fine-grained classification according to the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). To address the potential instability under complex scenarios, we propose 2 correction methods that incorporate background k

Evidence-Based Evaluation of Malocclusion Management in the Mixed Dentition: From Prevention to Clinical Controversy.

The management of malocclusion during the mixed dentition is a crucial time for preventive and interceptive orthodontic intervention, given the complex interactions among craniofacial growth, tooth eruption, and orofacial function. Despite widespread use of early orthodontic treatment, uncertainty still remains about the optimal timing, choice of appliance, and long-term stability. This review collates recent evidence and proposes a functional-preventive approach to managing malocclusion in the mixed dentition, emphasizing risk assessment, etiologic control, and individualized treatment planni

Inhibition of hydroxyapatite growth by casein, a potential salivary phosphoprotein homologue.

Salivary phosphoproteins are essential in tooth mineral regulation but are often overlooked in vitro. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of casein, as a salivary phosphoprotein homologue, on the deposition and growth of hydroxyapatite (HA) on tooth surfaces. Hydroxyapatite growth was quantified using seeded crystal systems. Artificial saliva (AS) containing HA powder and 0, 10, 20, 50, or 100 μg ml(-1) of casein, or 100 μg ml(-1) of dephosphorylated casein (Dcasein), was incubated for 0-8 h at 37°C, pH 7.2. Calcium concentrations were measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). S
