Fusion of central incisors with supernumerary teeth: a 10-year follow-up of multidisciplinary treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Macrodontia of anterior teeth may occur as an isolated condition or as a result of fusion or gemination and may cause clinical problems such as tooth crowding and esthetic problems. Preliminary planning and careful management are often required by a dental team comprising an orthodontist, an endodontist, a prosthodontist, and an oral surgeon. A multidisciplinary treatment approach in a case with fused teeth is presented. METHODS: A 9-year-old girl presented with macrodontia of a left maxillary central incisor. The patient was referred to the orthodontic department because of a l

Characteristics of premaxillary supernumerary teeth: a survey of 112 cases.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of premaxillary supernumerary teeth among children in Taiwan. The study population consisted of 112 children, ranging in age from four years to fourteen years. The characteristics of supernumerary teeth were obtained from radiographs and clinical examination, and were confirmed by surgical intervention. The results showed that males were affected approximately three times as frequently as female. About 36 percent of the patients had more than one supernumerary tooth and more than 96 percent of supernumerary teeth occurred in the

Impacted incisors associated with supernumerary teeth treated with a modified Haas appliance.

Tooth impaction involves factors such as lack of space in the alveolar process, trauma, ankylosis, and mechanical barriers such as abnormal frenum, supernumerary teeth, tumors, and local cysts. When impaction occurs in the anterior region, esthetics are compromised. This report describes the successful approach to treatment for a young boy who had 2 supernumerary teeth associated with impaction of the left central and lateral permanent incisors. Treatment consisted of extracting the supernumerary teeth and performing maxillary expansion with a modified Haas appliance to guide the left central

Multidisciplinary evaluation and clinical management of mesiodens.

Supernumerary teeth are a disorder of odontogenesis relatively common in the oral cavity and characterized by an excess number of teeth. The term mesiodens is used to refer to an unerupted supernumerary tooth in the central region of the premaxilla between the two central incisors. The complications associated with mesiodens include: lack of eruption of permanent teeth, the deviation of the eruption path, rotations, retention, root re-absorption and pulp necrosis with loss of vitality, and diastema. Early detection of mesiodens is most important if such complications are to be avoided. This re

Bilateral molariform supernumerary teeth in the anterior maxilla: a report of two cases.

Supernumerary teeth are additional teeth besides the normal series and can be found in any region of the dental arch. Supernumerary teeth can be classified according to their form and locations. Early diagnosis and treatment of patients with supernumerary teeth may prevent or minimize complications. The treatment options depend on the type and position of the supernumerary tooth and its effect on the adjacent structures. Two male patients were referred to our clinic due to swelling in their maxillae and interrupted eruption of teeth. Upon radiological examination of the patients, impacted supe

Aetiology of supernumerary teeth: a literature review.

BACKGROUND: Supernumerary teeth are teeth, or tooth-like structures that have either erupted or remain unerupted in addition to the 20 primary and 32 permanent teeth. AIMS: This paper attempts to (a) provide an overview of the proposed hypotheses and the current understanding of the aetiology of supernumerary teeth, and (b) review the published cases of supernumerary teeth occurring in families. REVIEW: No studies have been able to distinguish between different aetiologies for the different locations of supernumerary teeth, while, from a developmental or molecular perspective, the proposed h

Fused double supernumerary premolars of the mandible: a rare case.

The incidence of nonsyndromic supernumerary premolars is rare. Supernumerary premolars are likely to undergo pathological changes. The most commonly encountered complications with these teeth are dentigerous cyst and root resorption of the adjacent tooth. This paper is about impacted double fused supernumerary premolars in the right mandiblular body associated with an impacted first premolar in a 17-year-old male. Under local anesthesia, the supernumerary premolars and the impacted permanent first premolar were surgically removed. Early diagnosis followed by an appropriate treatment at the rig

A non-syndrome case with bilateral supernumerary canines: report of a rare case.

Supernumerary teeth are described as the teeth formed in excess of the normal dental formula. Prevalence of supernumerary teeth varies between 0.1% and 3.8% in general Caucasian population. They have been reported in both the primary and the permanent dentition. Supernumerary teeth may occur in any region of the dental arch. However, a supernumerary tooth in the canine region is a rare condition and to our knowledge, a non-syndrome case with bilateral supplemental maxillary canines did not exist in the literature. It was the aim of this report to evaluate this rare case in view of both oral ra

Treatment of supernumerary teeth.

AIM: The finding of supernumerary teeth in the oral cavity is a common occurrence, and they are interesting because of their potential to lead to aesthetic and functional alterations. When they are present in the anterior area of the maxilla, they may cause complications, such as late tooth eruption or impaction of the central incisors. They affect from 0.5 to 3.8% of the population, with men being more affected. CASE REPORTS: This article describes two cases of impaction of the permanent maxillary left central incisor, due to the presence of a supernumerary tooth in the parasagittal area of

Fused teeth: a review of the treatment options.

Fused/geminated teeth may cause esthetic, spacing, periodontal, eruption and caries problems. The present study describes two clinical cases of similar dental fusion and compromises different and individualized treatment methods based on the proper treatment needs of a patient. In the first case the fused tooth was separated and the supernumerary tooth was extracted intraorally. In the second case, due to the union structure of a fused tooth up to the apex, extraction and extraoral separation was considered a better alternative than the separation of the fused tooth intraorally. Tooth abnormalities and soft tissue changes in patients with velocardiofacial syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of tooth abnormalities and soft tissue changes in patients with velocardiofacial syndrome. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty-six patients with velocardiofacial syndrome were examined to investigate the presence of tooth abnormalities and soft tissue alterations. The occurrence of tooth agenesis and supernumerary teeth was compared to patients without morphofunctional alterations, matched for gender and age. RESULTS: Of all patients, 76.92% exhibited at least one tooth abnormality, with predominance of hypoplastic alterations, especi

Mesiodens.

The presence of an extra supernumerary tooth in the central position of the upper or lower jaw is called mesiodens. These teeth can be present as part of a syndrome or can be found as an isolated finding. Mesiodens is the most frequently found extra tooth, with a prevalence in the general population of 0.15-1.9%, and with a higher frequency in males than females. Usually the shape is conical and mesiodens is smaller than the neighbour incisor. Several hypotheses have been suggested for the formation of supernumerary teeth. Early diagnosis and treatment are needed to support right dental occlus

A palatal dentigerous cyst arising from a mesiodente.

Dentigerous cysts can develop from unerupted primary, permanent, or rarely supernumerary teeth. When a supernumerary tooth is in the maxilla, near the midline, it is called a mesiodente. Such a mesiodente lies in the palate and a cyst developing about this tooth can extend directly up into the nasal fossae. More commonly a dentigerous cyst arising from unerupted maxillary teeth occurs about the molar, premolar, or canine teeth and the cyst extends up into the maxillary sinus. The CT and MR findings in a rare case of a dentigerous cyst of a mesiodente are presented.

An Erupted Dilated Odontoma: A Rare Presentation.

A dilated odontoma is an extremely rare developmental anomaly represented as a dilatation of the crown and root as a consequence of a deep, enamel-lined invagination and is considered a severe variant of dens invaginatus. An oval shape of the tooth lacking morphological characteristics of a crown or root implies that the invagination happened in the initial stages of morphodifferentiation. Spontaneous eruption of an odontoma is a rare occurrence and the occurrence of a dilated odontoma in a supernumerary tooth is even rarer with only a few case reports documented in the English literature. Management of Delayed Eruption of Permanent Maxillary Incisor associated with the Presence of Supernumerary Teeth: A Case Report.

A supernumerary tooth is one that is additional to the normal series and can be found in almost any region of the dental arch. Clinically, supernumerary teeth are able to cause different local disorders. It is important for the dentist to be aware of the clinical complications of supernumerary teeth, the most common being the delayed eruption of permanent teeth. Early diagnosis and management of supernumerary teeth is important to prevent the need for more complex surgical and orthodontic treatment. This case report highlights the problem of delayed eruption of permanent maxillary left central

Bilateral maxillary and mandibular fourth molars: a case report and literature review.

Supernumerary teeth are those present in addition to the normal set of teeth. These teeth are found in both the primary and the permanent dentitions, and are most frequently seen in the maxillary anterior and molar regions. Supernumerary molars are divided into two types, depending on their location: distomolars and paramolars. Distomolars usually occur in the form of a fourth molar distal to the third molar, while paramolars are rudimentary supernumerary teeth that might develop buccally or lingually to the molar series. The management of a supernumerary tooth should be part of a comprehensiv

[Case report of three impacted supernumerary teeth in the premaxillary region].

A case is presented of a six-year-six-month-old boy with three impacted supernumerary teeth in the premaxillary region. The radiographic examination showed one mesiodens resorbing the root of the left primary central incisor and two inverted supernumerary teeth, also displacement of the unerupted permanent central incisors. Surgical treatment was performed to remove these supernumerary teeth. The forms of the mesiodens exhibited tubercularly shaped crown with four-conical cusp and two inverted supernumerary teeth showed a conicalshaped crown with incomplete root.
