Dental and Temporomandibular Joint Pathology of the Eastern Pacific Harbour Seal (Phoca vitulina richardii).

Skulls from 214 Eastern Pacific harbour seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) were examined macroscopically according to predefined criteria. The museum specimens were acquired from strandings along the west coast of the USA between 1909 and 2014. Ninety-eight skulls (45.8%) were from male animals, 108 (50.5%) from female animals and eight (3.7%) from animals of unknown sex. Their age varied from neonate to adult, with 101 adult animals (47.2%), 93 juvenile animals (43.5%) and 20 neonatal animals (9.3%). The majority of teeth were available for examination (90.0%); 7.5% of teeth were absent artefac

[Frequency and localization of facets in adults with correct dental arches and malocclusion in anterior teeth region regarding periodontal reaction and occlusal guidance].

We investigated 322 patients, 20 and 40 old to find connections between the occurrence and localisation of facets, malocclusion and dynamic occlusion and estimated special aspects of periodontal reactions. The symptoms "anterior crowding", "increased overbite and overjet" didn't effect an increasing of frequency of facets in comparison with eugnathic denture. We found, that the facets decreased in lateral segments if the overbite became deeper and on the other hand number of facets increased with advancing years. The localisation of facets and occlusal guidance of dynamic occlusion coincided o

The erosive effect of various drinks, foods, stimulants, medications and mouthwashes on human tooth enamel.

Two forms of non-carious dental disorder - erosive tooth hard tissue loss and dental erosion - have been increasingly observed in recent years. Dental erosion is the chemical loss of dental hard substances caused by exposure to acids not derived from oral bacteria. Mechanical forces from, for example, the tongue, the cheeks or toothbrushing, increase loss of partly-demineralized tooth surfaces and the cumulative loss of dental hard tissue is defined as erosive tooth wear (ETW). Dental hard tissue losses which occur because of very frequent acid exposure, such as through increased vomiting, but

Stain removal, abrasion and anticaries properties of a novel low abrasion dentifrice containing micro-fibrillated cellulose: in vitro assessments.

OBJECTIVES: This laboratory study assessed the performance of a novel fluoride dentifrice containing micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) and entrapped silica. METHODS: Removal of extrinsic stains was assessed using the pellicle cleaning ratio (PCR) method, and radioactive dentin abrasivity (RDA) was measured, to calculate a cleaning efficiency index (CEI). Fluoride efficacy was evaluated using widely used remineralization and fluoride uptake methods. The test product (Protegera™) was compared to common dentifrices (Crest - Cavity Protection™ and ProHealth™, Sensodyne Pronamel™, Arm & Hammer™ Ad

Dental attrition of Mayan Tzutujil children--a study based on longitudinal materials.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate dental attrition by measuring attrition volume on all types of teeth during facial growth, tooth shedding and eruption. Dental casts and cephalograms of 7 male and 7 female Mayan Tzutujil Indian children were used. Relationships were found between increase in vertical and horizontal facial growth and increase in attrition on the deciduous canines, first and second molars, permanent incisors and first molars in both arches and in both sexes. Significant increases in attrition were found on the deciduous second molars during eruption of the permanent fir

Evaluation of dentolabial parameters as part of a comprehensive esthetic analysis.

Analysis of the facial features and lip movements in relation to teeth, achieved by evaluating the facial, dentolabial, and phonetic parameters, should be the first step in prosthetic rehabilitation. This article focuses on dentolabial analysis, presenting a systematic approach to evaluating the relationship between the teeth and the lips and lower third of the face. The parameters evaluated include tooth exposure, incisal edge position, smile width, labial corridor, interincisal line vs. midline, and occlusal plane vs commissural line. Here two parameters of dentolabial analysis are explored

[Mouth diseases in a prehistoric agricultural population of northeastern North America].

There is no longer any question that the consumption of refined sugar is a factor in the development of dental caries. In fact, researchers now believe that the production of refined sugar and, particularly, its great availability and use in post-industrial populations has led to a virtual revolution in both the food industry and buccopathology. Clinical and epidemiological studies on the relationship between caries and sugar consumption have been conducted for more than 40 years, and the harmful effects of sugar consumption on the development of dental caries are now well known. Some authors

Limiting factors of functional adaptation to orthodontic space closure.

The closure of spaces, especially in the incisor region, has been criticized as causing functional alterations in the masticatory system. The study comprised 80 patients, 30 with space closure and 50 as a control. The results showed that closure of incisor spaces caused marked occlusal alterations, but apparently no damage to the temporo-mandibular joint nor to muscle action, provided that treatment was completed before the age of 12 years.

The prophylactic reduction of cusps--is it desirable?

In the opinion of some authors cusps are functionally efficient when worn down: others view cusps as efficient structures in themselves which should be retained. Such opinions are reviewed, and some conclusions drawn as to whether cusps should be retained or imitated when restoring an occlusion.

An anatomical, histochemical, and autoradiographic study of the ever-growing molar dentition of Microtus with comments on the role of structure in growth and eruption.

An analysis of the microanatomy of the molar dentition of Microtus utilizing histological, histochemical and autoradiographic techniques reveals a complex architecture with distinctive morphogenic mechanisms which respond to the functional requirements of the organism. These mechanisms include; the maintenance of continued growth and eruption of the molars to compensate for continued hard tissue loss from wear at the occlusal surface of the crown throughout the entire lifespan of the orgainism and a positive feedback repair mechanism to protect the growth systems from the potential destruction

Relationships between age and dental attrition in Australian aboriginals.

Tooth wear scores (ratios of exposed dentin to total crown area) were calculated from dental casts of Australian Aboriginal subjects of known age from three populations. Linear regression equations relating attrition scores to age were derived. The slope of the regression line reflects the rate of tooth wear, and the intercept is related to the timing of first exposure of dentin. Differences in morphology between anterior and posterior teeth are reflected in a linear relationship between attrition scores and age for anterior teeth but a logarithmic relationship for posterior teeth. Correlation

Microscopy of the dentine of enamel-free areas of rat molar teeth.

Dentine of the enamel-free areas (EFA) of first mandibular molar teeth of rats aged between 20-150 days was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Demineralized sections were stained with Gram-Twort's stain and examined for dental caries. In newly erupted teeth, a few dentinal tubules opened on the EFA surface. As teeth became worn down, extensive areas of EFA showed numerous patent tubules. In primary dentine, no occlusion or partial occlusion of tubules was apparent at any age except at the occlusal surface. It is postulated that this surface narrowing was caused either by dentine debris

Ill effects of improper oral hygeine procedure.

Improper use of the tools that prevent tooth decay and gingival disease can also produce harmful effects. For example, dental floss can cause inflammation; toothbrushes could cause abscesses; and water-irrigation devices might drive foreign material into soft tissue. This report discusses the effects of incorrect oral hygiene, the signs the practioner should notice, and the proper corrective steps. Although effective oral hygiene is essential for the maintenance of healthy teeth and supporting tissues, analysis of the literature and clinical observation suggested that six problem areas may be

A tall rostral hook in a medieval horse premolar tooth.

Development of dental abnormalities due to improper occlusal wear is common among modern domestic horses. This phenomenon often is attributed to jaw conformation. Rostral mandibular hooks may develop in horses with underjet or mandibular prognathism, a condition where the lower jaw protrudes forward, beyond the upper jaw. Less abrasive diet, free of phytoliths and matrix-like plant fibers, also may promote enamel and focal overgrowths of equine dentition. Here we report a rostral mandibular hook in a lower premolar tooth of a medieval horse, found in a spring deposit in Levänluhta, Osthrobothn

Copper deficit as a potential pathogenic factor of reduced bone mineral density and severe tooth wear.

UNLABELLED: The study evaluated if men and women with severe tooth wear were at increased risk of general bone loss. Enamel biopsies obtained from 50 subjects aged 47.5 ± 5 years showed decreased copper content, which was associated with reduced spine bone mineral density, suggesting deficits of this trace element contributing to bone demineralization, enamel attrition, and deteriorated quality of mineralized tissues. INTRODUCTION: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to assess associations between enamel trace minerals and bone mineral density (BMD) in severe tooth wear. We hypoth

Assessment of Nanoscale Configuration of Dentin in Non-carious Cervical Lesions.

Introduction Non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are structural deformities or tissue loss in the cervical region of teeth, which are closer to the gum line that do not result from caries (tooth decay). On the tooth enamel at the gingival margin, these lesions are frequently seen as V- or U-shaped notches. The causes of NCCLs are multifaceted and involve intricate relationships between chemical, mechanical, and biological elements. The slow loss of enamel and dentin in the cervical area occurs due to mechanical causes like abrasive toothbrushing and occlusal tension, as well as chemical varia
