Dentinal dysplasia type I: review of the literature and report of a family.

A family is reported with dentinal dysplasia type I affecting both dentitions. Presenting features included unusual mobility of the teeth, followed by early exfoliation; normal clinical shape of the crowns of the teeth, but with an amber color without any sign of attrition or abnormal loss of enamel. Radiographic findings showed pulp-chamber and root-canal obliteration, poor root formation, radiolucent linear appearance of the pulp chamber parallel to the cementoenamel junction and frequent periapical radiolucencies. Histological studies have reported large masses of calcified tubular dentin,

Specific oral and maxillofacial identifiers in panoramic radiographs used for human identification.

Radiographically assisted dental identification is an important means for individual identification. Specific identifiers help to quickly filter some of the possible corresponding AM and PM images at the beginning. The study seeks specific oral and maxillofacial identifiers in panoramic radiographs. A total of 920 panoramic radiographs from 460 live patients were used. The most recent radiograph served as the surrogate post-mortem (PM) record of an unidentified person, and the earliest radiograph served as the ante-mortem (AM) record of the same person. We evaluated the following four groups o

Discrete pulp canal calcification in a case of full pulpotomy: A 2-year follow-up case report.

Pulpotomy is recognized as a promising treatment option, especially for immature permanent teeth, as it prevents the unnecessary removal of radicular pulp tissue. The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcome of full pulpotomy using Biodentine in the young permanent tooth with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis. Full pulpotomy with Biodentine was performed on a 15-year-old male patient diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis in tooth #47. Follow-up was done at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years postoperatively. The patient was asymptomatic throughout the follow-ups. 12-mont

Deficiency of G protein-coupled receptor Gpr111/Adgrf2 causes enamel hypomineralization in mice by alteration of the expression of kallikrein-related peptidase 4 (Klk4) during pH cycling process.

Enamel is formed by the repetitive secretion of a tooth-specific extracellular matrix and its decomposition. Calcification of the enamel matrix via hydroxyapatite (HAP) maturation requires pH cycling to be tightly regulated through the neutralization of protons released during HAP synthesis. We found that Gpr115, which responds to changes in extracellular pH, plays an important role in enamel formation. Gpr115-deficient mice show partial enamel hypomineralization, suggesting that other pH-responsive molecules may be involved. In this study, we focused on the role of Gpr111/Adgrf2, a duplicate

Scleroderma and multiple teeth with invasive cervical resorption: is there a connection?

Scleroderma is a chronic connective tissue disease generally classified as an autoimmune rheumatic disease. Symptoms may include thickening of the skin, calcifications, Raynaud syndrome, and esophageal problems. Invasive cervical resorption is an aggressive form of external resorption localized in the cervical part of the tooth. Its etiology remains uncertain. This case report describes invasive cervical resorption affecting 4 teeth in a 44-year-old woman with scleroderma and speculates on the possible relationships between these disease entities.

A review of clinical research on the use of prenatal fluoride administration for prevention of dental caries.

From a theoretical standpoint, primary teeth could benefit from prenatal exposure to dietary fluoride supplements. Permanent teeth are unlikely to benefit from the procedure. Additional research on placental transfer of fluoride, and mechanisms of action of fluoride is indicated. Despite encouraging trends in existing data, administration of dietary fluoride supplements to pregnant women cannot be recommended at this time, because conclusive clinical evidence that the procedure reduces dental caries in the teeth of offspring is lacking. Well-controlled clinical trials should be carried out to

Enzyme replacement therapy prevents dental defects in a model of hypophosphatasia.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) occurs from loss-of-function mutation in the tissue-non-specific alkaline phosphatase (TNALP) gene, resulting in extracellular pyrophosphate accumulation that inhibits skeletal and dental mineralization. TNALP-null mice (Akp2(-/-)) phenocopy human infantile hypophosphatasia; they develop rickets at 1 week of age, and die before being weaned, having severe skeletal and dental hypomineralization and episodes of apnea and vitamin B(6)-responsive seizures. Delay and defects in dentin mineralization, together with a deficiency in acellular cementum, are characteristic. We rep

Nothing new under the heavens: MIH in the past?

AIM: This was to study an archaeological population of subadult teeth in 17th and 18th century skeletal material from a London (England) cemetery for enamel defects including molar-incisor-hypomineralisation (MIH). METHODS: Dentitions of 45 sub-adults were examined using standard macroscopic methods and systematically recorded. A total of 557 teeth were examined with a *5 lens and photographed. Ages of the individuals were estimated from their dental crown and root development stages and not from charts that combine tooth eruption with development stages. The dental age of the individual and

[A histological observation of the primary teeth with enamel hypoplasia resulting from perinatal disturbance].

Two primary teeth with enamel hypoplasia from two cerebralpalsied children were subjected to histological examination. One primary tooth was B and the other was C. The location of enamel hypoplasia in these teeth was considered to coincide with the neonatal line reaching the enamel surface. The purpose of this study was to examine the location of the enamel hypoplasia in these teeth in relation to the neonatal line, and to detail the histological structure of the teeth. They were examined morphologically as well as histologically, by using a stereoscopic microscope, SEM, a light microscope and

Complicated crown fracture of an unerupted permanent tooth--a case report.

Trauma to primary teeth may result in direct damage to underlying developing permanent teeth because of the close relationship that exists between the apices of the primary teeth and their permanent successors. Injuries to developing teeth have been classified into ten different categories, using a classification that is largely based on developmental alterations to the permanent teeth. However, this classification does not include other types of trauma that may occur to developing teeth, such as crown fractures. Although apparently rare, such injuries can occur by direct contact of the impact

Dental Diseases Increase Risk of Aortic Arch Calcification Independent of Renal Dysfunction in Older Adults: Shenzhen Community Cohort Study.

Many studies have documented that dental diseases were associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Aortic arch calcification (AoAC) is a powerful predictor of cardiovascular diseases. However, whether the status of dental health is associated with AoAC is still unknown. 9463 participants over the age of 60 from Shenzhen community centers were included in the cross-sectional analysis. Physical examination data, blood biochemical tests, and AoAC scores calculated by chest radiography were collected and analyzed. Among them, 2630 participants were followed up for AoAC progressio

Conservative management of a horizontal root fracture in a primary maxillary central incisor: Case report.

Dental trauma occurs frequently in toddlers and the treatment protocols vary depending on each case. Thus, clinicians must not only plan the treatment but also consider any possible sequelae and characteristics related to the child and the family. The aim of this paper was to report a case of a three-year-old boy who had a horizontal root fracture in the middle third of the primary maxillary right incisor root (tooth 51) and crown discoloration of the primary maxillary left incisor (tooth 61) which were successfully treated with conservative management. The management was established in agreem

Age estimation in the living: A scoping review of population data for skeletal and dental methods.

Age estimation of living individuals has become a crucial part of the forensic practice, especially due to the global increase in cross-border migration. The low rate of birth registration in many countries, hence of identification documents of migrants, especially in Africa and Asia, highlights the importance of reliable methods for age estimation of living individuals. Despite the fact that a number of skeletal and dental methods for age estimation have been developed, their main limitation is that they are based on specific reference samples and there is still no consensus among researchers

Regulation of enamel and dentin mineralization by vitamin D receptor.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D plays an important role in bone mineralization. Enamel and dentin are two mineralized tissues of different origins that are part of the tooth structure, but the mechanism by which vitamin D regulates the mineralization of these tissues remains unclear. We examined the mineral deposition pattern of enamel and dentin in continuously erupting incisors in a vitamin D receptor (VDR) deficient mouse model to determine the effect of vitamin D receptor pathway on enamel and dentin mineralization. METHODS: VDR wild-type mice (VDR+/+) and VDR-deficient (VDR--/--) littermates were

Disturbed enamel mineralization in a rat incisor model.

Possession of full-thickness hard enamel appears to be one of the indispensable life-saving characteristics of rats. Previous studies by Suga and his colleagues and by others demonstrated that various types of malformation are evoked in continuously erupting rat incisors. In the current report, we directed our effort to oversee various types of enamel malformation caused experimentally in rat incisors. We surveyed the specimens collected by Suga and his colleagues, as well as specimens we obtained. From the results, it is conceivable that perturbation of the programmed sequential events during
