This study aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance of monolithic single crowns made from zirconia (ZI), lithium disilicate (LS2), or feldspar ceramic (FC). Five groups of crowns representing a maxillary first molar were made with the appropriate dimensions according to the manufacturer's instructions. The ZI and LS2 crowns were luted adhesively or cemented conventionally on a metal abutment tooth analog. The feldspar ceramic crowns were luted adhesively. All specimens underwent axial loading until fracture. The crowns in the ZI groups possessed the highest fracture resistance independent of

PURPOSE: This study was intended to provide a report of experience and results with Frialit-2 implants used for single-tooth replacement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over a 7-year period (1994-2000), 146 single-tooth implants (84 maxilla, 62 mandible) were placed in 112 patients (67 females, 45 males; 31.2 +/- 16.4 years). The sites included maxillary anterior teeth (n = 38) as well as the mandibular premolars and molars (n = 57). Ninety-three crowns were cemented and 53 crowns were screw mounted (22 with vertical, 31 with horizontal screws) on standard abutments. The follow-up time varied between

A dilated odontoma is an extremely rare developmental anomaly represented as a dilatation of the crown and root as a consequence of a deep, enamel-lined invagination and is considered a severe variant of dens invaginatus. An oval shape of the tooth lacking morphological characteristics of a crown or root implies that the invagination happened in the initial stages of morphodifferentiation. Spontaneous eruption of an odontoma is a rare occurrence and the occurrence of a dilated odontoma in a supernumerary tooth is even rarer with only a few case reports documented in the English literature. This article reports the use of a minimally invasive technique to address a challenging clinical problem in the esthetic zone. The clinical steps taken to achieve forced eruption by 1.5-2.0 mm of a maxillary central incisor that presented minimal clinical crown because of caries are described in detail. This subsequently allowed the successful placement of a crown. The tooth was extruded by forces generated between 2 neodymium-iron-boron magnets. One was affixed to the palatal surface of the tooth, and the other was embedded in a thermoformed splint. Weekly circumferential supracrestal fiberot

The aim of this article was to evaluate 1 year after surgery a surgical protocol that included gingivectomy and an apically positioned flap plus osseous resective surgery to correct excessive gingival display (EGD) in patients with altered passive eruption (APE) of the maxillary anterior teeth. Six female patients aged 18 to 22 years were diagnosed with APE type 1B. Surgical crown lengthening with flap surgery and bone recontouring was performed to achieve the biologic width. Photographic images were analyzed to evaluate the stable improvement of crown length before the procedure (baseline), i

This case report describes a multidisciplinary approach using orthodontic forced eruption to facilitate prosthetic restoration of a subgingivally fractured maxillary permanent central incisor. A 14-year-old male patient presented at the pediatric dental clinic due to unesthetic appareance and for management of a fractured maxillary right central incisor tooth. Intraoral examination revealed that the maxillary right central incisor had sustained a crown-root fracture with pulp exposure. We treated the tooth endodontically and performed orthodontic root extrusion with a modified Hawley appliance

The situation and configuration of the occlusal plane can be modified by the process of supra-eruption, which can be split up into: active eruption (the tooth leaves its socket) and periodontal growth. In order to dissociate and better by understand them, supra eruption of the first upper molar was observed in the absence of the first lower molar. Three groups of subjects were selected, the first group, our reference group (n = 50), consisted of subjects with complete healthy dental arches for which we could determine the extent of the gingival margin and the crown height. The second group of

The tooth root is an important part of the tooth that works together with the surrounding periodontium to maintain the tooth in the alveolar socket. The root develops after crown morphogenesis. While the molecular and cellular mechanisms of early tooth development and crown morphogenesis have been extensively studied, little is known about the molecular mechanisms controlling tooth root formation. Here, we show that β-catenin is strongly expressed in odontoblast-lineage cells and is required for root formation. Tissue-specific inactivation of β-catenin in developing odontoblasts produced molar

BACKGROUND: A traumatic injury to the primary dentition can cause damage to the germ of the permanent successor. As a clinical consequence a dilaceration with root deformation, malpositioning and disturbances of eruption can occur. Surgical repositioning of such a dislocated crown of a developing tooth can be a treatment option.
CASE REPORT: A four year old patient was referred to our clinic because of a mobile upper primary central incisor and a radiographically visible displaced dental crown. Her history revealed a traumatic dental injury one year ago. Radiologic examination confirmed an in

OBJECTIVES: Rhabdomyosarcoma represents the most common paediatric soft tissue sarcoma, with 40% occurring in the head and neck region. Given that survival rates now reach 80%, minimising late adverse effects, particularly dental developmental complications, has become a priority. The aim of this paper was to identify the scope, severity and range of such late dental effects following treatment for head and neck sarcoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We systematically investigated late dental adverse events using orthopantomograms in rhabdomyosarcoma survivors treated between 1990 and 2014. Orthopan

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Dental trauma to the predecessor teeth can cause crown and root dilacerations to the successor teeth, which can interfere with the normal development of permanent teeth. The aims of this study were to verify the types of trauma more frequent to the predecessor teeth that cause dilaceration to their successor teeth, to determine the frequency of crown and root dilacerations in permanent incisors, taking into account the child's age at the time of trauma, and to describe the types of treatment performed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Details of 815 anterior primary teeth with dental i

"Black stain" is a black or black-brown, exogenous tooth discolouration. It is characterised by dark lines or groups of black dots in the cervical third of the tooth crown and runs parallel to the gingival margin. It is a special form of strongly adhering deposits (plaque) on the tooth surface with an increased tendency to calcification.

Forced eruption offers a method of treatment of teeth fractured close to the alveolar crest. We introduce a modification of this common technique. The fractured fragment of a patient's crown is bonded to the adjacent teeth and used as anchorage, permitting the root extrusion while offering acceptable aesthetics. The bonded crown does not impede the eruption of the root so that the frequent occlusal adjustment of other methods is not required. The final result is acceptable and a low cost alternative to common techniques.

INTRODUCTION: Recreational and sport activities, traffic accidents and human behaviour represent the main causes of trauma in young people.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes a case of a 15.2-year-old male who suffered uncomplicated crown fracture and avulsion of tooth 11 and uncomplicated crown fracture of tooth 21 due to a bicycle accident. Tooth 11 was dry stored and it was replanted 18 h after the trauma. The root was planed to remove the necrotic periodontal tissue, the pulp was extirpated before replantation and a flexible splint was applied to tooth 13 to tooth 23 for 3 weeks. A

Surgical crown lengthening has been proposed as a means of facilitating restorative procedures and preventing injuries in teeth with structurally inadequate clinical crown or exposing tooth structure in the presence of deep, subgingival pathologies which may hamper the access for proper restorative measures. Histological studies utilizing animal models have shown that postoperative crestal resorption allowed reestablishment of the biologic width. However, very little has been done in humans. Aims. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the potential changes in the periodontal tissues, partic

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate bone and soft tissue levels in immediately restored single implants positioned in the esthetic anterior region.
METHODS: Forty-five patients requiring single-implant crowns in the anterior region received 52 implants, which were restored immediately. Periapical radiographs and digital images of 368 interproximal sites were taken during regular follow-ups from 24 to 72 months after surgery. The interproximal papilla was assessed and compared to the distances between the bone crest and the contact point between the natural teeth

Periimplantitis in a malpositioned maxillary anterior implant is one of the most challenging situations in implant dentistry. Since the regenerative treatment can often be unpredictable and have esthetic consequences such as soft tissue recession due to flap raising, extraction is sometimes recommended. In order to place a new implant after extraction, a bone regeneration procedure must be carried out. This implies raising a flap and therefore the risk of further interproximal gingival recession. In the case presented in this article, a hopeless implant at position 11 presented severe periimpl

PURPOSE: To compare the stresses generated after the use of low elastic modulus polyetheretherketone (PEEK) as dental post and crown material with glass fiber post and metal supported ceramic crowns using finite element analysis.
METHODS: First an image of a maxillary central incisor taken on micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) was uploaded to a computer program. Modeling was made of all the materials in the computer environment and 3-dimensional (3D) virtual models were obtained. Using two different post materials (glass fiber and PEEK post) and two different crown materials (metal supporte
