A Novel DSPP Mutation in Dentinogenesis Imperfecta Shields Type II: Clinical, Genetic and Stem Cell Perspectives.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: To identify the genetic cause of dentinogenesis imperfecta type II (DGI-II) in a family, analyse tooth microstructure and evaluate functional defects in patient-derived stem cells (SHED) to explore genotype-phenotype links. METHODS: A 13-member family with DGI-II underwent clinical evaluation. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) and Sanger sequencing identified pathogenic variants. Exfoliated tooth was assessed via micro-CT, microhardness testing and SEM. SHEDs from patients and controls were isolated, validated for stemness (flow cytometry, adipogenic induction) and tested fo

Thecodont tooth attachment and replacement in bolosaurid parareptiles.

Permian bolosaurid parareptiles are well-known for having complex tooth crowns and complete tooth rows in the jaws, in contrast to the comparatively simple teeth and frequent replacement gaps in all other Paleozoic amniotes. Analysis of the specialized dentition of the bolosaurid parareptiles Bolosaurus from North America and Belebey from Russia, utilizing a combination of histological and tomographic data, reveals unusual patterns of tooth development and replacement. The data confirm that bolosaurid teeth have thecodont implantation with deep roots, the oldest known such example among amniot

Structure, attachment, replacement and growth of teeth in bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus, 1776), a teleost with deeply socketed teeth.

Tooth replacement poses many questions about development, pattern formation, tooth attachment mechanisms, functional morphology and the evolution of vertebrate dentitions. Although most vertebrate species have polyphyodont dentitions, detailed knowledge of tooth structure and replacement is poor for most groups, particularly actinopterygians. We examined the oral dentition of the bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix, a pelagic and coastal marine predator, using a sample of 50 individuals. The oral teeth are located on the dentary and premaxillary bones, and we scored each tooth locus in the dentary a

Intraosseous migration of second premolar below the inferior alveolar nerve canal: Case report.

Migration is a kind of eruption abnormality where a tooth grows far from its original site of development. Anomalies in dental eruptions are referred to as ectopia, which might be encountered in several regions around the oral cavity. The incidence of mandibular second premolar impaction has been estimated to be 2.1-2.7%. The frequency of its intraosseous distal migration is 0.25%. We report a case of extremely distally intraosseous migration of mandibular second premolar, which was found in a routine radiography. A 28-year-old woman who attended a dental clinic to treat teeth caries was notic

Combined Perio-Ortho Treatment of Infrabony Defects in Stage IV, Type 2 Periodontitis Patients: A Case Series.

Periodontitis stage IV may be characterized by pathologic tooth migration (PTM), which, when orthodontic correction is needed, represents the conditions that define the type 2 phenotype, according to the European Federation of Periodontology Clinical Practice Guidelines. Here, four clinical cases of patients with stage IV, type 2 periodontitis and deep intrabony defects adjacent to the migrated teeth are presented. After successfully completing steps 1 and 2 of periodontal treatment, the intrabony defects were subjected to regenerative periodontal surgery, and active orthodontic movement began

Natural frequency analysis of tooth stability under various simulated types and degrees of alveolar vertical bone loss.

The aim of this study was to test natural teeth stability under various simulated types and degrees of alveolar vertical bone loss, as well as to assess the role that the surrounding bone played for maintaining tooth stability. A three-dimensional finite element model of the human maxillary central incisor with surrounding tissue, including periodontal ligament, enamel, dentin, pulp, and alveolar bone, was established. One side and multiple vertical bone loss were simulated by means of decreasing the surrounding bone level apically from the cemento-enamel junction in 1 mm steps incrementally d

Transmigration of mandibular canines: a report of six cases and a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The transmigration of a mandibular canine is a rare phenomenon, the etiology of which is not clear. The literature on this rare condition is reviewed, and six cases of transmigrated mandibular canines are presented. REPORT: Panoramic radiographic examination of six patients revealed each patient had one impacted transmigrated mandibular canine. Of the six impacted teeth, the left mandibular canine was involved in four instances and the right in two. In one case the transmigrated canine was associated with a dentigerous cyst. SUMMARY: Transmigration of the mandibular canine is a r

Reliability and sensitivity of radiographic measures of hip dysplasia in childhood Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.

BACKGROUND: Hip dysplasia is a lack of femoral head coverage and disruption of hip and acetabular alignment and congruency, with severity ranging from mild subluxation in nascent at-risk hips to complete dislocation. Presentation of hip dysplasia in neuromuscular conditions can be sub-clinical or associated with a limp with or without hip pain, abductor and flexor weakness and reduced hip range of motion. Untreated hip dysplasia leads to early onset osteoarthritis requiring hip arthroplasty in early adulthood. Hip dysplasia occurs in 6-20% of children with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, however

Compressive force-induced succinate production via metabolic reprogramming in periodontal ligament cells promotes orthodontic tooth movement.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to elucidate metabolic alterations in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and investigate the role of the succinate-SUCNR1 axis in bone resorption and tooth movement. RESULTS: OTM was accompanied by the change of TCA cycle and increase of succinate in the human GCF. Succinate accumulation was observed in periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs) under compressive force, accompanied by increase of glycolysis and decrease of succinic dehydrogenase activity. Suppression of the succinate-SUCNR1 axis reduced osteoclastogenesis in BMDMs. OTM

Analysis of different type of transmigrant mandibular teeth.

OBJECTIVE: Until recently, most reports about transmigration have documented that the canine is the only tooth which can migrate to the opposite side of the arch. The goal of the study was to define the transmigration of different types of teeth in people in various regions of Turkey. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 112,873 panoramic radiographic files from seven different Turkish cities were inspected. The following data were evaluated according to age, gender, number of transmigrant teeth, localization, eruption status, side, unilaterally or bilaterally and associated pathology or dental abnormali

[Posterior bite collapse. 1. Etiology and diagnosis].

The posterior Bite Collapse is a sequelae of advanced break down. The presence of periodontal inflammation and loss of osseous support can induce teeth migration in a direction partially imposed by occlusal forces. Posterior Bite Collapse often causes mesial drifting of the posterior teeth and flaring of the anterior segments. It may be aggravated by early loss of teeth that are not replaced, by malocclusion or by a neuro muscular disorder.

The residual edentulous arches--foundation for implants and for removable dentures; some clinical considerations. A review of the literature 1954-2012.

The maxillary and mandibular arches are present before tooth eruption and will develop and mature with tooth activities. Following tooth extraction, the healing wound fills in, partly, the space occupied formerly by the natural tooth. The blood coagulum that occupies the healing wound will be replaced by the residual ridge, a scar tissue, which becomes part of the edentulous arch. After tooth loss, the resulting edentulous arches undergo extensive remodeling changes, but remain indispensable, vital oral structures. The resorptive process of the edentulous jaws is limited. The maxillary and man

The basic and applied biology of tooth eruption.

The dentition and the alveolar process of each jaw develop simultaneously so that, by the time the crown is completed and eruption begins, the crown is enclosed in a crypt within alveolar bone. Thus, the eruption of a tooth to its functional position involves discretely localized, bilaterally symmetrical bone resorption to produce an eruption pathway and bone formation to fill in the space previously occupied by the crown and growing roots. Studies of crypt surfaces during eruption confirm this polarization of alveolar bone metabolism around a tooth with respect to both bone cells and minerali

Dental Implants: Adjacent Tooth Proximity and Contact.

During the osteotomy and placement of dental implants, anatomical positions of adjacent natural teeth to a dental implant site may be very close or in actual contact. This can be due to anatomy, the size of the implant site, a misguided osteotomy, drifting, or migration of the adjacent tooth. The implant surgeon needs to be aware of the position of adjacent teeth to avoid root damage from the implant drill or the implant itself. The dimension of 1.5-mm space has been discussed, but it is an arbitrary speculative dimension. There is no agreed-upon "safe" proximity to adjacent tooth roots. Theor

Scanning electron microscope study of the healing molar tooth extraction socket in the rat.

Healing molar tooth extraction wounds in rats were examined by scanning electron microscopy from 15 minutes to 40 days following tooth removal. The wound epithelium, which was derived mainly from the gingiva but also from the cheek and hard palate, migrated beneath the superficial socket contents. The contents were lost between 5 to 11 days, thus leaving a central epithelial-lined depression. This decreased in width with time as the level of the wound epithelium approached that of the hard palate but was still present at 40 days. Between 5 and 7 days, the wound epithelium became more regular.

Occlusal changes following posterior tooth loss in adults. Part 2. Clinical parameters associated with movement of teeth adjacent to the site of posterior tooth loss.

PURPOSE: Much anecdotal evidence is available on tooth positional changes following loss of an adjacent tooth, but only a few studies are available. In Part 1 of this series, supraeruption was assessed and Generalized Linear Models were made to determine the clinical parameters associated with the supraeruptive process. The models demonstrated that clinical parameters were not only associated with the extent of supraeruption, but also with the type of eruption present. This investigation of tooth positional changes adjacent to sites of posterior tooth loss attempts to provide increased underst
