The dorsal column nuclei encode and transmit the network signatures of mechanical allodynia.

The neural circuits that transmit the sense of pain and how pain is encoded by these circuits are still poorly understood.Mechanical allodynia is a prominent form of chronic pain characterized by painful responses to innocuous touch that develops as a consequence of nerve damage and inflammation. Here, we show that alterations to the normal log-normal distribution of neuronal activity and structure of neural correlations between neurons in the dorsal column nuclei (DCN) constitute a signature feature of mechanical allodynia, with the transmission of "allodynic" light touch information to the t

A Large-Area Broadband Multimodal Dual-Resonant Haptic Device for Bidirectional Telerobotic and Augmented Interactions.

Bidirectional haptic systems demand interfaces that combine sensing and actuation, enabling concurrent detection of tactile inputs and delivery of perceptually rich feedback across a broad frequency spectrum. However, most existing haptic technologies remain limited to simple tactile sensing or narrowband feedback, struggling to resolve continuous motions and simultaneous sensory cues required for naturalistic human-machine interaction (HMI). These limitations fundamentally constrain the fidelity and expressiveness of tactile communication, preventing current human-machine interfaces from repr

Sex differences in the strategies of haptic object memory in early adulthood.

Everyday life inevitably involves touch. Encoding, recalling, and recognizing objects by touch requires haptic object memory, which is thought to rely on both verbal and visual capabilities. This raises the question of whether performance or strategies used to solve haptic memory tasks are sex-dependent. We assessed 45 healthy young adults (27 females, 18 males; aged 18-36 years) with repeated measurements. Participants were asked to encode ten everyday objects while blindfolded and allowed to explore them by touch. After a five-minute delay, participants were asked to recall as many objects a

Decoding Cross-Modal Haptic Neural Coupling Through EEG-LSTM Spatiotemporal Modeling for Vibration-Roughness Interaction.

Haptic feedback is crucial for enhancing virtual immersion, but a neural coding mechanism that correlates the vibration frequency with surface roughness in haptic substitution remains unknown, which hinders the development of tribologically driven haptic interfaces. To address this limitation, this study models cross-modal neural coupling between mechanical vibrations and roughness systematically through double-blind experiments, event-related potential analysis, and electroencephalography (EEG) space-time modeling based on the long short-term memory (LSTM) method. By dynamically extracting th

Pseudo-Dribbling Experience Using Single Overlapped Vibrotactile Stimulation Simultaneously to the Hand and the Feet.

When designing a haptic interface, simplicity is crucial to avoid negative effects caused by excessive weight and complexity. Using multimodal information, haptic illusions, and providing context are known to create simpler interfaces. We have previously proposed the use of single overlapped vibrotactile stimulation (SOVS) for presenting spatiotemporal tactile perception, a method that simultaneously presents overlapped waveforms to multiple body parts. There, the acceleration measured from a person dribbling a basketball with an accelerometer positioned on the index finger and the floor was o

Haptic Relocation Away From the Fingertip: Where, Why, and How.

Tactile haptic devices are often designed to render meaningful, complex, and realistic touch-based information on users' skin. While fingertips and hands are the most preferred body locations to render haptic feedback, recent trends allow such feedback to be extended to alternative body locations (e.g., wrist, arm, torso, foot) for various scenarios due to reasons such as wearability and needs of the application. In this paper, I address the new concept of haptic relocation. It refers to scenarios in which the expected feedback is related to the fingertips but rendered on a different body loca

Dynamic changes in somatosensory and cerebellar activity mediate temporal recalibration of self-touch.

An organism's ability to accurately anticipate the sensations caused by its own actions is crucial for a wide range of behavioral, perceptual, and cognitive functions. Notably, the sensorimotor expectations produced when touching one's own body attenuate such sensations, making them feel weaker and less ticklish and rendering them easily distinguishable from potentially harmful touches of external origin. How the brain learns and keeps these action-related sensory expectations updated is unclear. Here we employ psychophysics and functional magnetic resonance imaging to pinpoint the behavioral

Affective touch topography and body image.

Recent evidence suggests that altered responses to affective touch-a pleasant interoceptive stimulus associated with activation of the C-Tactile (CT) system-may contribute to the aetiology and maintenance of mental conditions characterised by body image disturbances (e.g., Anorexia Nervosa). Here, we investigated whether tactile pleasantness and intensity differ across body sites, and if individual differences in dysmorphic appearance concerns and body and emotional awareness might be associated with touch perceptions across body sites. To this end, we measured perceived pleasantness and inten

Information about contact force and surface texture is mixed in the firing rates of cutaneous afferent neurons.

Cutaneous mechanoreceptors in our hands gather information about the objects we handle. Tactile fibers encode mixed information about contact events and object properties. Neural coding in tactile afferents is typically studied by varying a single aspect of tactile stimuli, avoiding the confounds of real-world haptic interactions. We instead record responses of small populations of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons to variable tactile stimuli and find that neurons primarily respond to force, though some texture information can be detected. Tactile nerve fibers convey information about many fea

Relationship Between Spatial Variations in Static Skin Deformation and Perceived Roughness of Macroscopic Surfaces.

The perceived roughness of macroscopic surface features is related to finger skin deformation. For example, skin indentation into surface grooves and the spatial variation in slowly adapting type 1 (SAI) mechanoreceptor activities are linked to the magnitude of subjective roughness. However, the perception of macroscopic roughness has not been directly linked to the spatial variations in skin deformation; therefore, this article investigated the relationship between the subjective roughness magnitude and the spatial spectrum of skin deformation through contact with roughened macroscopic surfac

Brief Myofascial Intervention Modulates Visual Event-Related Potential Response to Emotional Photographic Contents: A Pilot Study.

The use of touch for the treatment of psychiatric disorders is increasingly investigated, as it is shown that cognitive symptoms can be improved by various forms of massage. To investigate if the effect of massage is measurable using classical visual event-related potential components (P1, P2, late positive potential (LPP)), we performed a preliminary study on six participants using myofascial induction massage. Participants were shown emotionally valenced or neutral images before and after a 20 min myofascial massage. We found general increases in P2 amplitude following the intervention acros

Evaluation of Lingual Tactile Sensitivity Using a Pneumatic Multi-Point Stimulation Device.

BACKGROUND: The sensory function of the tongue is critical for mastication and swallowing. However, its assessment methods remain insufficiently established. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we developed a pneumatic multi-point stimulation system capable of controlling the location, timing, and pressure of small balloon inflations to simulate the movement and elasticity of food within the oral cavity. Using this system, we established a new method to quantify lingual tactile sensitivity, specifically the ability to detect stimulus point movement under passive touch and pressure differences under ac

Anhedonia to Gentle Touch in Fibromyalgia: Normal Sensory Processing but Abnormal Evaluation.

Social touch is important for interpersonal interaction. Gentle touch and slow brushing are typically perceived as pleasant, the degree of pleasantness is linked to the activity of the C-tactile (CT) fibers, a class of unmyelinated nerves in the skin. The inability to experience pleasure in general is called anhedonia, a common phenomenon in the chronic pain condition fibromyalgia. Here, we studied the perception and cortical processing of gentle touch in a well-characterized cohort of fibromyalgia. Patients and controls participated in functional brain imaging while receiving tactile stimuli

FingerWrap: A High-Density Finger-Enveloping Tactile Display.

Touch enables humans to recognize the location, motion, shape, and properties of contacted objects in the real world through mechanoreceptors distributed widely across the skin. However, existing tactile displays typically stimulate only the ventral surfaces of the fingers and hands, limiting the range and richness of touch-based interactions in interactive systems. Here, we present FingerWrap, a high-density pneumatic pin-array display that wraps around the finger and activates the widely distributed mechanoreceptors. FingerWrap uses 337 pins arranged at 13 pins/cm$^{2}$, which cover the vent

A Direction-Dependent Mechanotransduction Model to Convert Fingertip Forces Into Neural Spike Trains for Tactile Feedback.

Microneurography studies have shown that human mechanoreceptor (MR) activity is directionally sensitive to shear forces, enabling fine tactile perception and object manipulation. However, existing computational mechanotransduction models largely neglect this directional tuning, limiting their biological realism and effectiveness for tactile feedback systems such as prosthetic hands. This paper presents a Direction-Dependent Mechanotransduction Model (DDMM) that replicates the direction-specific encoding behavior observed in human tactile afferents. The model integrates multidirectional pressur

Effects of Distributed Friction During Sliding Touch.

Friction modulation allows for a range of different tactile sensations and textures to be simulated on flat touchscreens, yet is largely unable to render fundamental interactions such as tracing the edge of a line or shape; an edge consists of straddling two different states, yet friction modulating screens traditionally apply only one friction force at a time to the whole finger. In order to expand the range of sensations rendered via friction modulation, in this paper we explore the possibility of applying spatial feedback on the fingerpad via differing friction forces on flat touchscreens.

Paradigms for restoration of somatosensory feedback via stimulation of the peripheral nervous system.

The somatosensory system contributes substantially to the integration of multiple sensor modalities into perception. Tactile sensations, proprioception and even temperature perception are integrated to perceive embodiment of our limbs. Damage of somatosensory networks can severely affect the execution of daily life activities. Peripheral injuries are optimally corrected via direct interfacing of the peripheral nerves. Recent advances in implantable devices, stimulation paradigms, and biomimetic sensors enabled the restoration of natural sensations after amputation of the limb. The refinement o

Encoding/decoding of first and second order tactile afferents in a neurorobotic application.

We present a neurorobotic framework to investigate tactile information processing at the early stages of the somatosensory pathway. We focus on spatiotemporal coding of first and second order responses to Braille stimulation, which offers a suitable protocol to investigate the neural bases of fine touch discrimination. First, we model Slow Adaptive type I fingertip mechanoreceptor responses to Braille characters sensed both statically and dynamically. We employ a network of spiking neurones to transduce analogue skin deformations into primary spike trains. Then, we model second order neurones

Analysis of motor behavior in piano performance from the mixed methods approach.

INTRODUCTION: The focus of this study centers on the extraction, analysis, and interpretation of the motor behavior of advanced-level pianists using observational methodology, itself framed within the field of mixed methods, paying particular attention to those aspects that characterize the pressed and struck touch. The aim of this research was to analyze the motor interactions of activation or inhibition associated with the production of a type of touch in the movements of the right upper limb of the participating pianists. METHODS: An ad hoc observational instrument was built that was incor
