Induced Toxoplasma gondii, Toxocara canis, and Isospora canis infections in coyotes.

Six littermate laboratory-raised coyotes (No. 1-6) were used to study the transmission of Toxoplasma gondii from cats and mice, and Toxocara canis and Isospora canis from dogs and mice. Coyotes 1 and 2 were inoculated orally with 1,000 infective oocysts of the TC-1 strain of T gondii; coyotes 3 and 4 were fed mice infected with tissue cysts of the TC-1 strain of T gondii. Eight days after inoculation with T gondii, the same 4 coyotes were exposed to Toxocara canis: coyotes 1 and 2 were inoculated orally with 500 embryonated eggs, and coyotes 3 and 4 were fed mice infected with Toxocara canis.

Immunogenicity and protective efficacy of recombinant Toxocara canis inorganic pyrophosphatase protein.

Toxocara canis is a neglected zoonotic nematode that is widely prevalent worldwide. The parasite is of high veterinary and medical importance due to the disease it causes in dog pups and its ability to cause larval migration in humans, affecting internal organs. The most rational approach to contribute to the effective control of infection is considered to be the development of vaccines rather than the treatment of dogs with drugs. The current study identified a homolog (Tc-PYP) of inorganic pyrophosphatases (PPases) in T. canis lineages. Here, the efficacy of rTc-PYP, an adjuvanted form of th

Characteristics of Toxocara canis induced lung inflammation in C57BL/6 mice.

Toxocariasis, a neglected zoonotic disease caused by parasites of the Toxocara genus, represents a significant public health concern, with an estimated global seroprevalence of 19%. Despite the well-known respiratory symptoms associated with toxocariasis, the immune response in the lungs during toxocariasis is still poorly understood. This study analyzes both local lung and systemic immune response to T. canis infection and T. canis excretory-secretory antigens (TES) intranasal application in C57BL/6J mice. Lungs, blood, and spleens were collected at specific time points for histopathological

Distribution of Toxocara cati larvae in experimentally infected BALB/c mice.

The experimental infection of mice with Toxocara cati provides one of the best models for pathological and immunological study of the visceral larva migrans syndrome. To broaden our knowledge of T. cati larval migration, BALB/c mice were inoculated with 500 embryonated eggs of T. cati for a period of two months. In the present study, T. cati eggs, obtained from faeces of naturally infected cats, were used for infection. After oral infection of 500 embryonated eggs of T. cati, mice were euthanised at 1, 2, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 70 days post-infection (dpi) in groups of three per day. System

Successful capture of Toxocara canis larva antigens from human serum samples.

BACKGROUND: Toxocara canis is a nematode that parasitizes dogs, while humans are paratenic hosts. When humans are infected the migrating larvae damage the liver, lungs and even the nervous system. Larva migrans diagnosis is based on immunological techniques; however, the commercial immunodiagnostic kits detect anti-T. canis antibodies which may cross-react with other parasites, mainly nematodes with extra-intestinal migration. Moreover, antibodies do not necessarily reflect an active infection; so detection and quantification of circulating antigens may provide appropriate and timely informati

Adult Toxocara cati infections in U.S. children: report of four cases.

We report four cases of passage of subadult or adult Toxocara cati worms by young children ages 20 months to seven years. Worms were expelled rectally in two cases and in two cases they were vomited. A single worm was passed in two cases, three worms in one case, and 15 worms in the fourth case. All worms that were available for study were identified as T. cati by morphologic criteria, including the arrow-shaped cervical alae and the digitiform shape of the male tail. None of the four children exhibited clinical signs of ocular or visceral larva migrans, and in two cases where serum samples we

Visceral larva migrans--an immunofluorescent examination of rabbit and human sera for antibodies to the ES antigens of the second stage larvae of Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati and Toxascaris leonina (Nematoda).

Precipitates were demonstrated in vitro at the orifices of the second stage larvae of Toxocara canis and T. cati when placed in sera derived from rabbits infected with these nematodes. Cross-reactions occurred between these two species. Furthermore, these precipitates occurring at the oral, excretory pore and the anal orifices of these larvae were shown to be of a specific antibody nature by the use of the direct fluorescent antibody (Coons) staining technique. The second stage larvae of Toxascaris leonina did not react in this way when examined in the above-mentioned experimental system, or i

Toxocara in humans, dogs, and cats in Vietnam: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Toxocara spp. are zoonotic parasites that cause toxocariasis in humans. In Vietnam, information on these parasites is fragmented, and many local reports remain inaccessible to the international research community. This study conducted a comprehensive literature review to assess the distribution and prevalence, and to estimate the true prevalence of Toxocara spp. in humans, dogs, and cats in Vietnam. The true prevalence was estimated using a Bayesian approach based on diagnostic test characteristics used in each published study. Of 766 studies screened, 58 studies were included in the systemati

Epidemiological study of Toxocara canis infection in dogs in selected regions of Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Toxocariasis caused by Toxocara canis is a common parasitic disease in dogs with important zoonotic implications. Although fecal examination is traditionally used for diagnosis, it has limitations in detecting prepatent, low-intensity, or intermittent infections. Therefore, serological testing was selected in this study as a more sensitive and time-efficient approach for assessing exposure at the population level. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of T. canis infection and identify associated risk factors among dogs in four Egyptian governorates. METHODS: A total of

Role of sex hormones in the reactivation of Toxocara canis larvae in pregnant bitches.

Based on an exhaustive review, a theory was proposed with an immunoendocrine perspective on the reactivation of dormant Toxocara canis larvae in pregnant bitches and their transmission to fetuses through the placenta, or milk and colostrum to puppies. A historical review was carried out on the reactivation of dormant larvae of T. canis in pregnant bitches which suggested that larval reactivation of T. canis is not solely the effect of a single hormone (prolactin) but is the result of a series of events triggered by progesterone, prolactin, and estrogens. In the first third of gestation, proges

Toxocara canis infection in multiple types of animals: ophthalmological and pathological observations.

Human ocular toxocariasis (OT), caused by pet roundworm Toxocara canis (Nematoda Ascaridoidea), is a worldwide ocular parasitic infection that poses a severe threat to eyesight, especially in school-aged children. However, the infection process and pathological mechanism of Toxocara are difficult to study in the human body. This study was designed to explore long-term ocular manifestations in different rodents infected with Toxocara canis, uncovering the specific pathological mechanism and migration pathway of larvae after infection. The three types of experimental animals we selected were C57

Seroprevalence of Toxocara spp. in Pregnant Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Toxocariasis is an important health problem caused by the parasitic species Toxocara canis (T. canis) and Toxocara cati (T. cati). Prevalence of toxocariasis in pregnant women as a vulnerable population is doubly important, and the aim of this study is to estimate the overall prevalence of toxocariasis infection in pregnant women according to the available reports. METHODS: The present study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklists. A systematic search was carried out in international scientific databases (Google Scholar,

Evaluating the Toxocara cati extract as a therapeutic agent for allergic airway inflammation.

BACKGROUND: The hygiene hypothesis suggests that early life exposure to helminth infections can reduce hypersensitivity in the immune system. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to evaluate the effects of Toxocara cati (T. cati) somatic products on allergic airway inflammation. METHODS: Between 2018 and 2020, T. cati adult worms were collected from stray cats in Mashhad, Iran (31 out of 186 cats), and their somatic extract was collected. Thirty BALB/c mice were equally divided into three groups, including the OVA group (sensitized and challenged with ovalbumin), the somatic administered group
