Measurement of cellular traction forces during confined migration.

To migrate efficiently through tissues, cells must transit through small constrictions within the extracellular matrix. However, in vivo environments are geometrically, mechanically, and chemically complex, and it has been difficult to understand how each of these parameters contribute to the propulsive strategy utilized by cells in different confining environments. To address this, we employed a sacrificial micromolding approach to generate polymer substrates with tunable stiffness, controlled adhesivity, and user-defined microscale geometries. We combined this together with live-cell imaging

Conservative Treatment of Bilateral Impacted Mandibular Canines Traction.

The objectives of the treatment of impacted canines differ according to the characteristics of dental malocclusion. Traction of the tooth is a conservative and viable alternative, which allows for maintaining stability and occlusal function. The following case report describes the treatment of an 11.6-year-old female patient, who presented bilateral impaction of mandibular canines in contact with the midline, mixed dentition in the inter-transitional period, class I angle malocclusion, with light crowding teeth. The treatment comprised three phases. The first phase, verticalization of the mand

International Validation of Myopic Traction Maculopathy Staging System.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the interobserver agreement of the myopic traction maculopathy (MTM) staging system (MSS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Each observer was asked to look at the MSS Table and then identify, in each optical coherence tomography scan, one among four stages of MTM in the retina, one among three stages in the fovea, and, as secondary findings, the presence or absence of an outer lamellar macular hole and the presence or absence of epiretinal abnormalities. The interobserver agreement value was calculated using the Gwet's AC1 unweighted and AC

Traction mechanical characterization of porcine mitral valve annulus.

The Mitral Annulus (MA) is an anisotropic, fibrous, flexible and dynamical structure. While MA dynamics are well documented, its passive mechanical properties remain poorly investigated to complete the design of adequate prostheses. Mechanical properties in traction on four sections of the MA (aortic, left, posterior and right segments) were assessed using a traction test system with a 30 N load cell and pulling jaws for sample fixation. Samples were submitted to a 1.5 N pre-load, 10 pre-conditioning cycles. Three strain rates were tested (5 %/min, 7 %/min and 13 %/min), the first two up to 10

Vertical traction for lumbar radiculopathy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Only low-quality evidence is currently available to support the effectiveness of different traction modalities in the treatment of lumbar radiculopathy (LR). Yet, traction is still very commonly used in clinical practice. Some authors have suggested that the subgroup of patients presenting signs and symptoms of nerve root compression and unresponsive to movements centralizing symptoms may benefit from lumbar traction. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effects of vertical traction (VT) on pain and activity limitatio

Traction Injury of Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve During Thyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Loss of the neuromonitoring signal (LOS) during thyroidectomy signifies recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury, which is one of the common complications, especially by traction injury. Transient intraoperative LOS means spontaneous recovery of nerve function during surgery or within 6-month post-surgery. Few articles discuss intraoperative recovery time and transient LOS, and there is no consensus on the risk factors for RLN traction injury and its recovery course; thus, we wanted to determine the maximum intraoperative recovery time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective stud

Wire or Hook Traction for Reducing Zygomatic Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Variable methods have been introduced for reduction of the zygomatic fractures. The Dingman elevator is used widely to reduce these fractures but is inappropriate in certain types of fractures which require atypical traction vectors. We introduce and examine an alternate method of reducing zygomatic fractures using wire and hook traction. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed for all zygomatic fracture patients admitted between 2008 and 2014. Medially rotated fractures were reduced by using a wire looped through an intermaxillary screw secured on the medial side of the zygo

Inverted nipple correction with dermal flaps and traction.

BACKGROUND: Inverted nipple occurs when part of or the entire nipple is abnormally located below the areola. Surgical repair of severe cases involves suture or flap techniques. Complications include recurrence, lactation problems, hypopigmented scar formation in the areola, and loss of sensation. We describe an alternative repair technique using a dermal flap and traction, which leads to less apparent scarring and preserves lactation function and sensation. METHODS: Between January 2010 and January 2013, we treated 28 inverted nipples in 16 patients using two areola-based triangular dermal fl

Calcaneal traction pin placement simplified: a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: The tibial neurovascular bundle and sural nerve are at risk with errant pin placement during transcalcaneal pin placement. The purpose of this study was to determine a relative safe zone using a single osseous landmark to establish a technique applicable in the presence of trauma. We describe the neural anatomy anatomically and radiographically, giving surgeons a reliable and relatively safe technique for transcalcaneal pin placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four cadavers were dissected for the major medial neurovascular structures and the sural nerve. The closest distance f

Vitreomacular traction and exudative age-related macular degeneration.

Vitreomacular traction resulting from lacking, incomplete or anomalous posterior vitreous detachment is suspected to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of different forms of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) along with the known mechanisms. It is probable that the fundamental pathomechanisms of AMD formation have already begun by the time tractional forces lead to a change for the worse. Vitreomacular traction alone is perhaps not able to induce AMD. It would seem sensible to consider vitreous changes when diagnosing and treating AMD patients because of the high coincidence of vitreo

Branch retinal vein occlusion associated with vitreoretinal traction.

CASE REPORT: Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) is believed to arise at arteriovenous crossing sites. Surgical dissection of the arteriovenous sheath has been proposed as a treatment option, yet induction of a posterior vitreous detachment may be as important in obtaining a successful surgical outcome, suggesting that vitreoretinal traction may play a role in the development of BRVO. A retrospective review of 3 patients presenting with clinical features of BRVO and evidence of vitreoretinal traction at the occlusion site was conducted. COMMENTS: All patients presented with mild vitreous hem

Validation of traction force indicator in ventouse devices.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the traction force indicator in a ventouse device gave an accurate estimation of the force applied. METHODS: The study was carried out at the Derby City Hospital. An estimate of measurement errors was made by analyzing the standard deviation of the residuals for 30 Kiwi OmniCup devices (Clinical Innovations, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England) and a standard industrial spring balance. RESULTS: The measurement errors for the traction forces were very small and acceptable for the OmniCup. The overall estimate of measurement errors was 0.45 kg (1.35 lb). CONCLUSION:

Lower extremity traction pins: indications, technique, and complications.

The placement of pins in the lower extremity for the purpose of skeletal traction is a basic skill required by an orthopedic surgeon. These pins are primarily used for the management of fractures and dislocations. Although simple, the insertion and care of these pins can be accompanied by severe complications including damage to neurovascular structures, physeal injury, ligamentous insult, fracture, and infection. We review the techniques of pin insertion at the distal femur, proximal tibia, and calcaneus to provide a foundation for residents and attendings alike so that unnecessary complicati
