High seroprevalence to Bartonella quintana in homeless patients with cutaneous parasitic infestations in downtown Paris.

Bartonella quintana infections have recently been reported in homeless patients. We prospectively studied the prevalence of and the factors associated with a positive serology to B quintana in the homeless population of downtown Paris. The following data were recorded: ongoing cutaneous parasitic infestation, years of homelessness, living status, previous episodes of body pediculosis and scabies, alcoholism, intravenous drug use, known immunodepression (including undernutrition and known HIV infection), and contacts with animals. B quintana serology was performed in 57 patients and in 53 age-

Bartonella quintana invades and multiplies within endothelial cells in vitro and in vivo and forms intracellular blebs.

Bartonella quintana, the aetiologic agent of trench fever, has recently been implicated in culture-negative endocarditis and bacteraemia amongst homeless people. B. quintana is a fastidious slow-growing organism. A tissue culture system of human endothelial cells was developed in which B. quintana grew intracellularly. Observation of the different steps during infection of these cells demonstrated that the bacteria adhered to and penetrated the cells by phagocytosis. During the preadherence stage, most bacteria exhibited surface appendages that resembled those described for Salmonella typhimur

Ornithine metabolism in the genus Rochalimaea.

Ornithine metabolism was studied in two strains of the trench fever rickettsia Rochalimaea quintana, Fuller and Guadalupe, and in the vole agent, a strain of Rochalimaea but not necessarily of Rochalimaea quintana. The metabolic activity of intact cells and cell-free extracts was measured by monitoring the evolution of 14CO2 from [1-14C]ornithine. Low levels of activity were obtained with all three strains, but requirements for the demonstration of this activity differed. With the cells of the Fuller and Guadalupe strains, the decarboxylation of ornithine was almost completely dependent on add

[Recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage in a 24-year-old female patient].

A 24-year-old female patient from Sierra Leone was referred to the authors' hospital after several unclear intracerebral bleeding events and an echogenic structure on the aortic valve. The patient was receiving oral anticoagulation therapy due to paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and left ventricular noncompaction. Fluorescence in situ hybridization in combination with polymerase chain reaction and sequencing revealed infective endocarditis of the mitral and aortic valve caused by Bartonella quintana. In retrospect, the intracerebral bleeding events could be identified as septic emboli with secon

Bartonella quintana endocarditis of the tricuspid and mitral valves.

Bartonella quintana is a gram-negative microorganism that can lead to culture-negative infective endocarditis (IE) in immunocompromised patients. Here, we present an exceptionally rare case of a 70-year-old male with Bartonella quintana-associated IE primarily limited to the tricuspid valve that spread to the mitral valve after tricuspid valve replacement. This was then complicated by infective spondylodiscitis of the thoracic vertebrae, ultimately resulting in death due to cardiac arrest.

Chlamydia pneumoniae, but not Bartonella quintana, is associated with coronary heart disease: results of a French case-control study.

Serologic cross-reactivity has been demonstrated between Bartonella quintana and Chlamydia pneumoniae. Therefore, the association between antibodies to C. pneumoniae and coronary heart disease (CHD) as described in the literature may be due to antibodies cross-reacting with B. quintana. To investigate this hypothesis, we evaluated, in a case-control study, the prevalence of C. pneumoniae and B. quintana antibodies among 296 cases with angiographically significant artery lesions and 170 controls without angiographically demonstrable coronary artery disease. The prevalence of C. pneumoniae antib

Human pathogens in body and head lice.

Using polymerase chain reaction and sequencing, we investigated the prevalence of Rickettsia prowazekii, Bartonella quintana, and Borrelia recurrentis in 841 body lice collected from various countries. We detected R. prowazekii in body lice from Burundi in 1997 and in lice from Burundi and Rwanda in 2001; B. quintana infections of body lice were widespread. We did not detect B. recurrentis in any lice.

Mapping the tRNA modification landscape of Bartonella henselae Houston I and Bartonella quintana Toulouse.

Transfer RNA (tRNA) modifications play a crucial role in maintaining translational fidelity and efficiency, and they may function as regulatory elements in stress response and virulence. Despite their pivotal roles, a comprehensive mapping of tRNA modifications and their associated synthesis genes is still limited, with a predominant focus on free-living bacteria. In this study, we employed a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating comparative genomics, mass spectrometry, and next-generation sequencing, to predict the set of tRNA modification genes responsible for tRNA maturation in two intr

Multi-locus sequence typing of a geographically and temporally diverse sample of the highly clonal human pathogen Bartonella quintana.

Bartonella quintana is a re-emerging pathogen and the causative agent of a variety of disease manifestations in humans including trench fever. Various typing methods have been developed for B. quintana, but these tend to be limited by poor resolution and, in the case of gel-based methods, a lack of portability. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) has been used to study the molecular epidemiology of a large number of pathogens, including B. henselae, a close relative of B. quintana. We developed a MLST scheme for B. quintana based on the 7 MLST loci employed for B. henselae with two additional lo

[Bartonella spp. as a zoonotic pathogens transmitting by blood-feeding arthropods].

Prior to 1993, Bartonella bacilliformis was the only member of the Bartonella genus. Now, the genus Bartonella currently contains over 30 species of Gram-negative bacteria that parasitize mammalian erythrocytes and endothelial cells. Bartonella spp. have been isolated from a variety of mammal species, most often from rodents, ruminants and carnivores, and these animals are implicated as reservoirs for the genus Bartonella. The persistent bacteriemia is more readily documented in the primary reservoir species and may occur less frequently or to a much lower lever in accidental hosts. In the nat

Bartonella quintana Endocarditis in Persons Experiencing Homelessness, New York, New York, USA, 2020-2023.

Bartonella quintana infection can lead to bacillary angiomatosis, peliosis hepatis, chronic bacteremia, and culture-negative endocarditis. Transmitted by the human body louse (Pediculus humanus humanus), B. quintana infection has become an emerging disease in recent decades among persons experiencing homelessness. By using retrospective laboratory surveillance, we identified 5 cases of left-sided, culture-negative B. quintana endocarditis among persons in New York, New York, USA, during January 1, 2020-November 23, 2023. Identifications were made by using molecular assays. All patients experie
