Spatial factors affecting young females' disaster exposure in municipalities facing population decline.

Understanding and reducing the risk of natural disasters is crucial for maintaining the economy and society. Since Japan is a disaster-prone country and the most advanced nation in the world regarding aging and population decline, it necessitates a natural disaster risk analysis that considers both challenges. This paper represents the first study to explore the risk of natural disasters, specifically for young females exposed to four types of events: floods, tsunamis, storm surges, and sediment disasters, particularly in municipalities at risk of vanishing. We identified municipalities with a

[Emergency medicine after a catastrophic disaster: from a view of geriatrics and gerontology].

The megathrust earthquake and the towering tsunami hit the east coast of Japan on March 11th of 2011 after intervals of 1,142 years. About 90 % of nearly 20,000 victims were drowned in devastating waves, while every town and city along the coast turned out to be a ruin. Over 400,000 people were forced to move to the evacuation centers where the evacuees slept on the floor without electricity, running water or heating systems at freezing nights. Emergency medicine, therefore, was more required during the evacuation phase than during the acute phase of the tsunami disaster. Here discussed is the

[Factors that influence comorbidity from panic disorder and PTSD after earthquakes].

OBJECTIVE: After the earthquake and tsunami in Chile (F-27), we studied the effect of socio-demographic factors, exposure to the event, and state aid received on comorbidity from panic disorder (PD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHOD: Surveys that include the administration of the Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS) to 246 inhabitants. RESULTS: 19.1 % comorbidity was found (r=.583, R2=.340, p<.01). Females homeowners have a higher risk of PD and PTSD. State aid is associated with more cases of PD. CONCLUSIONS: We designed risk/resistance profilesagainst earthquakes/tsunamis and an ins

A new point cloud processing method unveiled hidden coastal boulders from deep vegetation.

Huge coastal boulders are useful to reconstruct the size of past extreme waves such as those associated with tsunamis and storms using inverse-type or forward-type boulder transport models. These models fundamentally require the precise shape of boulders. Traditionally, they have often been assumed to be rectangular or ellipsoidal with three axes measured in the field. However, if the boulder's shape is complex, this method is unable to represent the actual shape accurately. Therefore, it prevents estimation of the tsunami or storm size reasonably using models. For this reason, boulders have r

Evaluating the effect of the incidence angle of ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 on detecting aquaculture facilities for sustainable use of coastal space and resources.

BACKGROUND: Driven by the growing world population, aquaculture plays a key role in meeting the increasing demand for food. However, aquaculture facilities in Japan are widely installed in coastal waters where natural disasters, such as typhoons and tsunamis, might wash these facilities away, thereby interfering with maritime navigation safety. Therefore, it is imperative to efficiently monitor the state of aquaculture facilities daily, particularly after a disaster in real time. To this end, several new space-borne L-band synthetic aperture radars (SARs) continue to be launched now and in the

Located in the Mozambican Channel in the southwestern Indian Ocean, near Africa, the islands that form the Union of the Comoros present, despite improved health and social progress, epidemiological features still dominated by communicable diseases, primarily malaria, diarrheal diseases, respiratory diseases, and gastrointestinal parasites. The archipelago is the regional gateway to vectorborne diseases, such as malaria and arboviruses, and to cholera. The prevalence of AIDS is 0.025%. The Union is facing a major upsurge in the prevalence of non-communicable diseases. Natural hazards (cyclones,

Contrasting offshore and onshore strong ground motions from the 2025 Mw 7.6 Aomori subduction interface earthquake: Characteristics and model evaluation.

On December 8, 2025, an Mw 7.6 subduction interface earthquake occurred off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, Japan, representing the largest-magnitude event recorded to date by the Seafloor Observation Network for Earthquakes and Tsunamis (S-net). Using a dataset comprising 84 offshore and 418 onshore strong-motion records, this study systematically compares the spatial distributions and attenuation characteristics of peak ground acceleration (PGA), spectral accelerations across multiple periods, and significant duration metrics (D70 and D90). The predictive performance of existing onshore and

Simple unilateral rupture of the great Mw 8.8 2025 Kamchatka earthquake.

On 29 July 2025, a moment magnitude (Mw) 8.8 great earthquake ruptured along offshore southern Kamchatka, with the aftershock region overlapping that of a 1952 Mw 8.8 to 9.0 event. Like 1952, the 2025 event nucleated at the northeastern end of the rupture, preceded by intense foreshock activity. Joint inversion of teleseismic and InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) data for the space-time slip distribution, with validation by means of forward modeling of deep-water tsunami recordings, revealed a southwestward elongated large-slip patch on the curved plate boundary. A slip of up to

A hybrid Monte Carlo simulation risk model for oil exploration projects.

A new 3-D Hybrid Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) Risk Model is proposed in this study. The wind, wave, current, climate change, and tsunami sub-models of the Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Transport and Water Quality Model HYDROTAM-3D are interrelated with MCS, to obtain probability distributions for the simulation of environmental conditions. This is the only model that can incorporate the tsunami, storm, and sea level rise risks in oil exploration projects. The spill risk index (SRI) of 50 blue barrels spilled due to a blowout from the rig/port during fuel supply was circa 1 ton/ship as Tier I

The stigma of widowhood in war and disaster affected communities of Sri Lanka: Contextual paths between trauma exposure and mental health distress.

To add to the dialogue regarding the long-term recovery and wellbeing of war and tsunami-affected women in Sri Lanka, we utilised the Conservation of Resources Theory (COR, Hobfoll, 2009) to inform an investigation of direct and indirect effects. The study was specifically designed to assess how traumatic exposure may represent a form of loss which may associate with related losses in the form of external and internal stigma which may then associate with poor mental health outcomes. The data for this study were collected in 2016 from a sample of 379 widowed women in Eastern Sri Lanka; particip

Stability of posttraumatic stress reaction factors and their relation to general mental health problems in children: a longitudinal study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the structure of posttraumatic stress reaction factors and their relation to general mental health problems in Norwegian children exposed to the tsunami on December 26, 2004. A total of 133 children and adolescents (ages 6-17) were interviewed 10 months posttsunami using the UCLA PTSD Reaction Index, and 104 were interviewed again 2.5 years after the tsunami. Confirmatory factor analyses supported the theory of a four-factor model of intrusion, active avoidance, numbing, and arousal as a better division of symptoms than the three-factor model used in the p

Web-Based Intervention for Postpartum Depression: Formative Research and Design of the MomMoodBooster Program.

BACKGROUND: In this report we describe the development and use of a web portal in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. This large scale disaster confronted many displaced people with death, despair and need for information and support. Awareness and insight in the emotional impact of disasters can provide opportunities for surveillance and early treatment. Moreover, online support systems can contribute to community building, empowerment of victims and resilience. OBJECTIVE: We evaluate the development and use of a multilingual web portal that combined a platform for information, emotional supp

Impacts of the 1918 flu on survivors' nutritional status: A double quasi-natural experiment.

Robust empirical evidence supports the idea that embryonic and, more generally, intrauterine disruptions induced by the 1918-flu pandemic had long-term consequences on adult health status and other conditions. In this paper we assess the 1918-flu long-term effects not just of in utero exposure but also during infancy and early childhood. A unique set of events that took place in Puerto Rico during 1918-1919 generated conditions of a "double quasi-natural experiment". We exploit these conditions to empirically identify effects of exposure to the 1918 flu pandemic and those of the devastation le

Predictors of decline in IADL functioning among older survivors following the Great East Japan earthquake: A prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: We described associations between the type of disaster experience and change in instrumental activities of daily living among older adult survivors before-after a terrible disaster. METHODS: The study took advantage of a "natural experiment" afforded by the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES), a nationwide cohort study established in 2010, seven months prior to the earthquake and tsunami. A follow-up survey was conducted in 2013. This study was conducted in Iwanuma, which was directly struck by tsunami. Our sample comprised community-dwelling aged survivors in Iwanuma
