We report a case of 17-year-old girl who presented with gradual destruction of the nose along with endopthalmitis and loss of vision of the left eye. On nasal examination, left alae nasi and nasal cartilage was destroyed. Left eye showed signs of endopthalmitis with pthisis bulbi with complete loss of vision. Skin biopsy, FNAC of the lymph nodes were suggestive of tubercular etiology. However, patient did not have any evidence of pulmonary TB. We report this case due to the rare clinical features. The importance of a high index of suspicion and prompt treatment in such atypical forms to preven

In our study we evaluated the Quantiferon-TB Gold (QFT-G) test and compared it with tuberculin skin test (TST) positivity in 44 pulmonary and 21 extrapulmonary tuberculosis cases in whom active tuberculosis infection was suspected on clinical, microbiologic and radiologic grounds. QFT-G positivity was 75% in pulmonary tuberculosis and 76.2% in extrapulmonary tuberculosis. TST positivity was 68.2 and 62%, respectively. Although QFT-G positivity was higher than TST positivity, the difference was statistically insignificant (P=0.77). Similar to TST, QFT-G is one of the supplementary diagnostic te

Extrapulmonary organ involvement in human immunodefiaency virus (HIV)-infected patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is reported to be 26%, however, the clinical predictors of extrapulmonary involvement in pulmonary TB patients has not been reported yet. We tried to determine the clinical predictors of presence of extrapulmonary involvement in patients with pulmonary TB. Cross-sectional study was performed including all adult patients with culture-proven pulmonary TB diagnosed between January 1, 2004 and July 30, 2006, at a tertiary referral hospital in South Korea. The presence of extra-p

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The majority of cases of tuberculosis occur among males, but the majority of cases with extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) occur among females. The aim of this study was to identify independent risk factors associated with EPTB.
METHODS: A multivariable logistic regression model was used. Eighteen thousand, six hundred seventeen cases of tuberculosis, notified through the French national mandatory network between 1 January 1997 through 31 December 2001, were included in the analysis. Because of multiple interactions, different multivariable models were built for eac

Ninety-six pregnant women and purperas with extrapulmonary tuberculosis were examined. A control comprised 120 apparently healthy females. The course of pregnancy, labor, and neonatality in women with genital tuberculosis was complicated: OPG gestosis, anemia, toxicosis of the first half of pregnancy, threatening miscarriage, premature and prompt labor, premature and early discharge of amniotic fluid, neonatal asphyxia. The frequency of complications of pregnancy, labor, and perinatal outcomes in females with extrapulmonary tuberculosis at other sites and in healthy pregnant women was pratical

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Tuberculosis (TB) pericarditis, while uncommon, should be considered in patients with pericardial masses and effusion. Timely recognition and treatment with anti-TB medications are crucial for a successful outcome.
ABSTRACT: TB pericarditis presenting as a pericardial mass is an unusual and rare manifestation of this disease. We report a 59-year-old South Asian male who presented with a 1-week history of dyspnea and cough. He was found to have a hemorrhagic pericardial mass with a massive pericardial effusion. Pleural fluid analysis was positive for TB. The patient was s

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is a multisystem disease that may affect any organ or tissue. Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most severe form of tuberculosis and commonly affects the brain. We aimed to study the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary features of TBM among adults and to compare them with other forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study including all patients hospitalized for extrapulmonary tuberculosis in the infectious disease department in Sfax, Tunisia between 1993 and 2018. We specified the particularities of TBM case

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is the world's leading infectious cause of death. Extrapulmonary TB accounts for 15% of TB cases, but the proportion is increasing, and over half a million people were newly diagnosed with rifampicin-resistant TB in 2016. Xpert® MTB/RIF (Xpert) is a World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended, rapid, automated, nucleic acid amplification assay that is used widely for simultaneous detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and rifampicin resistance in sputum specimens. This Cochrane Review assessed the accuracy of Xpert in extrapulmonary specimens.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of (18)F-FDG PET/CT in the diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (ET).
METHODS: The imaging data from 88 cases of ET undergoing (18)F-FDG PET/CT examinations between August, 2005 and May, 2011 were analyzed retrospectively.
RESULTS: All the 88 cases showed high (18)F-FDG uptake on PET imaging with a SUVmax ranging from 1.3 to 23.2. In 19 of the 88 cases, the extrapulmonary lesions were misdiagnosed as malignant neoplasms. Twenty-two patients were found to have phthisis. According to locations, the lesions were classified into 4 basic types, namely membranou

Disseminated extrapulmonary tuberculosis is uncommon, particularly among immunocompentent individuals. We report the case of a 38-year-old woman from the Ivory Coast who had osteomyelitis in the right humerus, a cold abscess in the pectoralis major muscle, T11 spondylitis, deep lymphadenopathies, peritoneal nodules, and hepatitis. She had no evidence of immune deficiency, and her only risk factor for tuberculosis was her origin from an endemic area. The outcome was favorable after treatment with antitubercular drugs. This case illustrates the recent changes in the epidemiology of tuberculosis

The immigration of people from countries with high incidence of tuberculosis has led to an increased number of cases of tuberculosis in Austria. The number of cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis has increased too. The variability of the clinical presentation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis which can affect almost every organ system makes it essential to include it in the differential diagnosis of any infectious disease. Early identification and rapid onset of therapy are most important for recovering without complications and avoidance of longterm sequelae. 9 cases of extrapulmonary tuberculos

From 1985 to 1987, 343 cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) were identified, representing about 20% of all the newly diagnosed TB cases at Veterans General Hospital-Taipei. Bacteriological and histopathological examinations were of equal importance in making a diagnosis of extrapulmonary TB. However, 79% of the cases of TB meningitis were diagnosed only by positive cerebrospinal fluid cultures for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The pleura, lymph nodes, urinary and osteoarticular systems were the most commonly affected locations. Male patients predominated except for TB lymphadenitis. However

Lytic bone lesions pose significant diagnostic challenges due to their varied causes, ranging from malignancies to infections and benign conditions. Tuberculous osteomyelitis, though rare in non-endemic regions, remains an important consideration, particularly in patients from high-burden areas. A 35-year-old Sudanese male with a family history of tuberculosis (TB) presented with chronic left iliac pain that did not respond to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Imaging revealed an expansile lytic lesion with cortical breaching, initially raising suspicion for malignancy. However, a

Diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is challenging. During the last two decades, several nucleic acid amplification tests have been deliberated to diagnose TB (including EPTB) and drug resistance (DR), i.e. in-house PCR/multiplex-PCR, commercial real-time PCR (e.g. Cobas TaqMan/LightCycler), line probe assay (e.g. GenoType MTBDRplus), GeneXpert®/GeneXpert® Ultra and Truenat®MTB/MTB Plus (TruPlus). However, we still need a simple and reliable diagnostic test especially for remote areas. Markedly, both GeneXpert/Xpert Ultra require a constant power supply and their high cost is a maj

Our understanding of the immune response in tuberculosis (TB) remains incomplete. This applies in particular to extrapulmonary TB (EPTB), a highly heterogeneous disease affecting up to 30% of patients in certain regions. Based on data-driven clustering of blood transcriptomes in an EPTB patient cohort, we define three highly distinct immunotypes. Combining bulk with single-cell RNA-sequencing delineates immunological trajectories characterized by dynamic IFN- and IL-1-mediated signalling in monocytes, alongside hyperactivation of T and NK cells, ultimately resulting in extensive immune dysregu

INTRODUCTION: despite major strides in the prevention, diagnosis and management of tuberculosis, the disease continues to be one of the most pressing global health problems, particularly in developing countries. The purpose of the present study was to describe the epidemiological profile among tuberculosis patients in Laayoune, Morocco.
METHODS: a retrospective study was conducted among tuberculosis patients (having extrapulmonary tuberculosis and pulmonary tuberculosis), registered in the diagnosis of tuberculosis and respiratory diseases reference center of Laayoune, between January 2017 an

Two cases of unusual extrapulmonary tuberculosis are presented. One patient was suffering of a pulmonary tuberculosis involving the brain, liver, spleen and peritoneum, with headaches, ascites, weight loss and night sweats. The other patient had lymph nodes and nodular liver tuberculosis and complained of fever, right upper quadrant pain, anorexia and weight loss. This tuberculosis form is extremely rare; only 23 cases were reported between 1950 and 1990. Furthermore, a drug-induced hepatitis developed in a liver already damaged by the tuberculosis and a chronic active C hepatitis. These two c
