Plastic and reconstructive surgery in Uganda--10 years experience.

We describe our experience of working in plastic and reconstructive surgery in Uganda over the last 10 years. There is a high burden of disease, a health system that is under resourced, and few qualified physicians to provide healthcare for a principally rural population. Training the physicians of the future is essential. Prevention and early wound management needs to be emphasized for traumatic injuries including burns. Subsidized up-country visits by trained specialists with the appropriate equipment are required to provide a service for the rural poor. There appears to be a high mortality

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Uganda: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Lymphomas are a relatively common complication of AIDS in western countries, but little is known of the impact of the AIDS epidemic in Africa on the risk of these tumours. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) occurring in Kampala, Uganda, their association with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and how their risk is modified by HIV and other variables. METHODS: A case-control study comparing NHL cases with age/sex-matched controls. Lymphoma cases included 50 histologically diagnosed adults (31 with validation and phenotyping) and 132 histologically diagnosed

Ivermectin distribution using community volunteers in Kabarole district, Uganda.

Ivermectin mass distribution for the control of onchocerciasis in Uganda began in 1991. This report describes a community based ivermectin distribution programme covering two foci in the Kabarole district which have an estimated 32,000 persons infected and another 110,000 at risk. Through nodule palpation in adult males, 143 villages were identified where nodule prevalence exceeded 20%. Skin snips were also taken from a sample of the population to measure changes in community microfilarial load (CMFL) with treatment. The delivery programme was integrated into the district health management str

Schistosoma mansoni along Lake Albert, Kibale District, Western Uganda.

Four hundred and fifty one human strata living in the three fishing villages of Ndiaga, Kabukanga and Rwabikongoro along Lake Albert shore in Kibale District were examined for S. mansoni infection using Kato/Katz method. Of the 451 people, 409 (90.7%) were found infected with S. mansoni with geometric mean egg count of 561.3 eggs per gram (epg) faeces. Males had significantly higher mean egg counts than females, 608.3 epg and 415.6 epg respectively. All S. mansoni infected individuals were treated with praziquantel at 40 mg/kg body weight. Other common parasites observed were Asaris lumbricoid

Birth trauma among liveborn infants in Mulago Hospital, Uganda.

In this retrospective review, data is presented of birth trauma seen among 4288 live born infants admitted to the special care unit of a large hospital over a three year period. Hypoxaemic brain injury resulting from birth asphyxia was by far the commonest form of birth trauma in this sample and it was the main cause of death, in many infants. All infants diagnosed as having sustained intracranial haemorrhage died while none of the other types of birth injuries were associated with any deaths. The need is emphasised to handle "high risk" deliveries with extra care while at the same time seekin

Relationship between ticks and Zebu cattle in southern Uganda.

Tick populations were observed on zebu (Bos indicus) cattle over a period of 2 years at Entebbe, Uganda where the climate was thought to be highly favourable for the free-living stages of ticks. collections of all instars of ticks were made from the body surfaces of the cattle at intervals of between 1 and 5 weeks. The species recorded in order of decreasing abundance were Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Amblyomma variegatum, Boophilus decoloratus, Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi, Rhipicephalus simus, Rhipicephalus compositus and Hyalomma marginatum rufipes. The rankings of the cattle based on bur

Childhood Hodgkin's disease in Uganda: a ten year experience.

Between 1967 and 1977, 48 patients with Hodgkin's disease under 16-years-old were treated with MOPP chemotherapy alone at the Uganda Cancer Institute because radiotherapy facilities are not available. Thirty-eight percent had early stage disease (stages I-IIIA). Prolonged first remissions were achieved in 74% of 42 complete responders. Of 11 patients who relapsed, 5 had prolonged second remissions induced by MOPP. Three patients were lost to follow-up and 15 of the remaining 45 died: 12 of these from progressive Hodgkin's disease, 2 from unrelated causes and 1 from Burkitt's lymphoma after 4 m

LLIN Evaluation in Uganda Project (LLINEUP) - Plasmodium infection prevalence and genotypic markers of insecticide resistance in Anopheles vectors from 48 districts of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: In 2017-2019, we conducted a large-scale, cluster-randomised trial (LLINEUP) to evaluate long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) treated with a pyrethroid insecticide plus the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO LLINs), as compared to conventional, pyrethroid-only LLINs across 104 health sub-districts (HSDs) in Uganda. In LLINEUP, and similar trials in Tanzania, PBO LLINs were found to provide greater protection against malaria than conventional LLINs, reducing parasitaemia and vector density. In the LLINEUP trial, cross-sectional entomological surveys were carried out at baseline and

Gut microbial profiles of COVID-19 patients in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The role of the microbiome in COVID-19 outcomes remains an area of exploration. We comprehensively explored the gut microbiome of Ugandan COVID-19 patients and inferred potential implications. METHODS: Stool and demographic data were collected from 100 COVID-19 confirmed cases at the covid isolation and treatment centers in Kampala during the first and second waves of the pandemic in Uganda (2020 and 2021, respectively). 16S rRNA sequencing was performed on the DNA extracted from stool, followed by bioinformatics analysis. Machine-learning techniques were used to determine microbe

Comorbidities among women presenting for obstetric care in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality rates are high in low- and middle-income countries, with Uganda’s ratio at 189 deaths per 100,000 live births. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for 15% of indirect maternal deaths worldwide. We examined medical comorbidities during pregnancy at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH) in south-western Uganda. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study at MRRH from January to December 2022. Each month, we randomly selected 200 women admitted to the obstetrics department and extracted data on sociodemographic characteristics and diagnoses. We summarised

Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus seroprevalence among blood donors in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV) causes a life-long infection that can progress to several types of KSHV-associated diseases. There is evidence for transfusion transmission of KSHV. In endemic regions, such as sub-Saharan African, KSHV seroprevalence is >40%. However, previous studies of blood donors utilized immunoassays that detect KSHV-associated disease-specific antigens, which may underestimate the true burden of KSHV in a healthy population. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We utilized samples from an on-going transfusion transmitted infection clinical trial to estimate the sero

Persistent unmet need for surgical care in Western Uganda.

Treatable surgical diseases account for a significant proportion of the global burden of disease, particularly in low- and middle-income communities. The number of deaths owing to poor surgical care or its non-availability has been reported to exceed those from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. The Ugandan government and its development partners aim to put in place measures to achieve universal health coverage for all communities. These include construction and equipping health facilities, training of health workers, opening up road networks, and poverty alleviation programmes. Howe
