OBJECTIVES: Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) and urethral obstruction (UO) are commonly linked to increased stress. The influence of human movement restrictions on their incidence remains undetermined. FIC with or without UO is associated with environmental stress factors. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (COVID-19) pandemic restricted human movement and working behaviours. It is unknown if these restrictions increased the risk of FIC or UO in cats.
METHODS: Total cat emergency accessions and transfers between 8 February 2019 and 8 February 2021 at two private hospitals wer

Identifying potential risk factors for urethral obstruction in male cats may help in disease prevention. The aims of this study were to assess whether breed, pedigree status, age, bodyweight and body condition score (BCS) are risk factors for urethral obstruction in castrated male cats using a primary care population. Within this, a specific question was whether any increase in rate of urethral obstruction in male cats due to excess body condition is because of higher bodyweight. A retrospective hospital-based matched case-control study was performed using 195 cases of urethral obstruction in

OBJECTIVE: To describe the technique for performing a coccygeal epidural injection of local anesthetic to facilitate catheterization in male cats with urethral obstructions using low-dose sedation.
SIGNIFICANCE: Prompt diagnosis and relief of urethral obstructions is important as many cats may have developed marked metabolic abnormalities at the time of presentation. General anesthesia in these patients may be associated with significant risk for complications. Pain management is also an essential treatment goal, and this technique relieves urethral and penile pain during the unblocking proce

A novel, non-invasive method to diagnose bladder outlet obstruction involves the recording of noise with a contact microphone pressed against the perineum (between anus and scrotum). This noise results from flow-generated vortices caused by prostatic obstruction. We developed a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) urethral model including urethral geometry to study the relation between generated noise and the degree of obstruction. This model comprised a bladder, bladder neck, prostate and urethra. Calculations were carried out at four bladder pressures, five degrees of obstruction and three obst

The "fetal urinoma" is a clinical and diagnostic entity due to urinary extravasation, early diagnosed in fetal and/or neonatal period. Both urinoma and urinary ascites, whose pathogenesis is not clear, are recognized associations of uterero-pelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) and neonatal posterior urethral valves (PUV) related with a protected fetal and neonatal renal function. Clinical and experimental studies have demonstrated that fetal urinary tract obstruction results in severe renal parenchymal injury. The so called "pop-off" valve mechanism has been advocated to justify the upper tract

OBJECTIVE: Based on 4 cases of infravesical obstruction due to extreme caliber disproportion between the posterior urethra and the penile urethra, a pathophysiological mechanism for this dynamic obstruction is given and endoscopic treatment is described.
SUBJECTS: Four cases of membrano-bulbo-urethral junction (MBUJ) stenosis, seen between September 1995 and April 1996, are described. Two boys had previous successful valve resection but still showed extreme ballooning of the posterior urethra. The other 2 boys showed bladder instability on urodynamics and the male variant of the spinning top

Computer technology has made it possible significantly to improve the technique and interpretation of the micturitional urethral pressure profile (MUPP). Thirty-nine patients with lower urinary tract symptoms have been investigated by this technique and the results compared with those of standard pressure/flow studies. A good correlation was found between the two methods of diagnosing outflow obstruction, but micturitional urethral pressure profiles offered practical advantages in patients who were elderly, immobile or who had severe involuntary voiding, and diagnostic advantages in patients w

BACKGROUND: Atypical Congenital Obstructive Urethral Lesions (ACOUL) are uncommon causes of urethral obstruction in children. They include Cobb's collar or Moorman's ring, Type III posterior urethral valve (PUV), congenital urethral narrowing and anterior urethral valves. This study is aimed to evaluate the knowledge and current practice amongst clinicians attending to ACOUL. An international online case based questionnaire was performed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey was administered to members of international urological societies. It included 22 clinical questions on cases with ACOUL (14

INTRODUCTION: Midurethral sling (MUS) remains a widely used and effective treatment for stress urinary incontinence, although complications such as voiding dysfunction and urinary tract infections (UTIs) may occur. Prior research has shown that up to 60% of women with chronic lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) after MUS surgery meet objective criteria for bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). This exploratory study aimed to assess whether UTI burden is associated with the presence of BOO in women with chronic LUTS following MUS. Secondarily, UTI patterns before and after urethral sling excision w

BACKGROUND: A urethral obstruction (UO) is an emergency commonly observed in male cats, which can result in significant clinical and laboratory alterations, leading to complications and death.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to correlate symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) with the urea, creatinine, potassium, and bicarbonate levels in cats with UO. In addition, the correlation between clinical score and time of obstruction was evaluated.
METHODS: Thirty male cats were selected and allocated into a control group (CG, n = 13) and an obstruction group (OG, n = 17). The laboratory analyses were cond

In the first part the authors report a nosological review of the obstructions of the bladder neck and urethra in childhood and present the most typical radiological aspects of the most important obstructive uropathies. In the second part they illustrate their cases, that include 11 patients between 0 and 10 years, of which 4 males, with urethral valves; 2 females, with external urethral meatus stenosis; 1 male, with non valvular stenosis of urethra: 2 one male and one female, with extrinsic obstruction by ectopic ureterocele; and 2 females, with neurologic bladder. The authors point out the ca

We report the successful use of fetoscopy to treat a case of severe low urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) secondary to a congenital megalourethra. A second trimester male fetus presented at 21 weeks of gestation with massive dilatation of the penile urethra. In addition, bilateral hydronephrosis, an enlarged and hypertrophic bladder, with progressive oligohydramnios were found, suggesting poor prognosis. Extensive counselling was performed and, after the approval from the local ethics committee and informed consent, patients accepted fetal therapy by fetoscopy. The procedure consisted in fetosc

Urethral stones are an uncommon cause of urinary blockage in children, particularly in those with congenital anomalies such as hypospadias. We present a 5-year-old boy with distal hypospadias who experienced repeated episodes of urinary retention and intermittent painful urination. During surgical repair, small urethral stones were identified at the stenotic meatus. The patient underwent a successful tubularized-incised plate hypospadias repair, resulting in normal voiding and resolution of obstruction. This case highlights the importance of considering urethral calculi in children with congen

BACKGROUND: Despite a high technical success rate and satisfaction, complications of an artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) can occasionally occur and vary in severity from transient urinary retention to unrecognized urethral injury or urethral erosion. Infection usually occurs when urine comes into contact with the device and necessitates explant of the cuff followed by delayed device replacement. In rare cases, however, the device can remain in contact with urine for long periods of time without the sequelae normally associated with acute infection.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Here we present a case r

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Iatrogenic female urethral obstruction resulting from sling operations may be related to surgical inexperience and must be better understood. Although there are no widely recognized parameters for this type of study, a single-surgeon consecutive series offers an opportunity to study the role of expertise in sling operations over time.
METHODS: This study consecutively examined 176 women who underwent an autologous fascial sling procedure. Postoperative urethral obstruction was identified by the occurrence of voiding dysfunctions. Clinically obstructed patients wer
