A prospective longitudinal study was conducted, looking at the changes in serum uric acid during pregnancy in women who were normotensive at initial presentation. In our sample of 78 women having a total of 88 singleton pregnancies, 13 developed pregnancy-induced hypertension during labour only, whilst a further 6 developed hypertension during pregnancy. Women who developed hypertension had significantly higher uric acid levels than women who remained normotensive throughout. However, there was an appreciable overlap between the groups. Women with essential hypertension showed similar changes.

Allopurinol (4-hydroxypyrazolo (3,4-d)-pyrimidine) is a potent xanthine oxidase inhibitor which inhibits the oxidation of naturally occurring oxypurines, thus decreasing uric acid formation. The clinical and metabolic effects of this agent were studied in 80 subjects with primary and secondary gout and other disorders of uric acid metabolism. BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases increase the mortality risk in Graves' disease (GD) patients. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases in GD. OBJECTIVE: To investigate serum uric acid (UA) levels in patients with extreme forms of eating disorders, at admission and discharge, following weeks of nutritional rehabilitation and weight restoration.
METHOD: This observational study enrolled 160 patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa restricting subtype (AN-R), AN binge-purge subtype (AN-BP), or avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). Serum UA levels were drawn on admission and discharge.

Propofol is an intravenous anesthetic agent commonly used intraoperatively as well as in the intensive care unit. Known short-term effects of propofol can include apnea, hypotension, and bradycardia. In children, the rarer adverse sequelae of intravenous anesthetics have received little attention. We present the case of a thirteen-year-old male who incidentally developed uric acid crystals in his urine following a short-duration propofol infusion.
