A Rare Pure Calcite Urolithiasis Confirmed by Infrared Spectroscopy.

This case report describes a 41-year-old woman with no significant medical history and a normal body mass index (BMI), who presented with ureterohydronephrosis due to a 5.5mm x 9mm calculus composed primarily of calcite (CaCO3) at the ureterovesical junction. The kidney stone, associated with cystitis and perirenal fat infiltration, was spontaneously expelled and subsequently analyzed. Optical microscopy revealed a grey homogeneous stone with a rough surface and white crystals upon examination. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) confirmed the stone's composition as pure calcite

Recurrent Urolithiasis Revealing Primary Hyperparathyroidism in a Nephrology Department.

BACKGROUND: Urinary lithiasis constitutes a recurrent pathology affecting a relatively young population. The risk of progression to chronic renal failure and the cost of treatment are the most important issues. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is responsible for urolithiasis and nephrocalcinosis in 7% of patients, and it represents the 7th cause of urolithiasis in Tunisia. Unfortunately, it remains an underdiagnosed pathology although it is curable. We aim to determine the clinical, biological, therapeutic, and evolutionary particularities of urinary lithiasis associated with PHPT in a nephr

Laparoscopic Pyelolithotomy for treating urolithiasis in ectopic pelvic kidneys.

INTRODUCTION: The management of urolithiasis ectopic pelvic kidneys (EPK) can be challenging because of the aberrant anatomy (1-4). We demonstrate the step-by-step technique of the laparoscopic approach for treating urolithiasis in EPK. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three men with EPK (2 left, 1 right) underwent laparoscopic pyelolithotomy through a transperitoneal approach. After establishing the pneumoperitoneum, the parietal peritoneum was opened at the parietal colic sulcus and the bowel displaced medially. The kidney was identified in the retroperitoneum and the renal pelvis exposed after remova

Primary costal hydatid cyst resembling urolithiasis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hydatid disease (HD) is a zoonotic infection caused by echinococcus granulosus tapeworms. HD accounts for approximately one million cases worldwide. HD is more prevalent in endemic areas, such as the Mediterranean region. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A middle-aged male patient presented with right flank pain for years. His vital signs and physical examination were unremarkable. The whole-body bone scan revealed an area along the sixth rib's posterior arch with increased metabolic activity and CT and MRI were compatible with a hydatid cyst. The cyst was surgically resected and irrigatio

Urethral Urolithiasis in Male Cattle Treated Using Pneumatic Lithotripsy.

One of the most important problems encountered in cattle breeding is urethral urolithiasis. Urolithiasis can be treated using various methods, but they all carry risks. Thus, a continuous search is being carried out for alternatives in this field. This study aimed to treat urethral urolithiasis in male cattle using pneumatic lithotripsy, a minimally invasive method. The urethra and penile tissues of 20 male cattle of different ages and breeds were obtained from slaughterhouse materials and measured before determining the probe diameters and lengths. The study included 9 male cattle (2 Simmenta

High Rate of Occult Urolithiasis in Normocalcemic Primary Hyperparathyroidism.

INTRODUCTION: Normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism (NPHPT) is characterized by elevations in serum parathyroid hormone levels in the presence of normal serum calcium concentrations after exclusion of secondary hyperparathyroidism. We have previously demonstrated no differences in the prevalence of clinically active urolithiasis between NPHPT and hypercalcemic asymptomatic PHPT, and that it is significantly higher in postmenopausal osteoporotic women with NPHPT in comparison to women with normal serum PTH and calcium concentrations. Few studies have addressed the occurrence of silent or oc

A novel method of imaging calcium urolithiasis using fluorescence.

PURPOSE: In the surgical management of urolithiasis the goal of treatment is not only to remove calculi, but also prevent future stone formation by rendering the patient stone-free/fragment-free. Achieving this goal is often difficult with endoscopic procedures due to the inability to visualize small calculi well even with x-ray or ultrasound. We evaluated fluorescence probes as a novel method of identifying calculi in the urinary tract. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In vitro calcium stones were incubated with each of the Osteosense 680 and Osteosense 750 calcium binding fluorescence probes, and ima

Urolithiasis associated with bilateral pelvic diverticula: a case report.

We present a case of renal stone associated with bilateral pelvic diverticula. The initial diagnosis by ultrasonography and plain abdomen radiography (KUB) was urolithiasis with a 15-mm calculus in the right renal pelvis. The patient was referred for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, but no stone fragments were yielded. So, further evaluations were performed by using repeated ultrasonography, intravenous urography, and computerized tomography, which revealed the presence of diverticula in both right and left renal pelvises with stone fragments within the right sided diverticulum. We concl

Ureteroscopy for pediatric urolithiasis: an evolving first-line therapy.

OBJECTIVES: To present in a retrospective report a contemporary series of patients aged 14 years and younger who were treated for stones with ureteroscopy at our institution from 1991 to 2002. With the improvement and miniaturization of ureteroscopes and ancillary instruments, the endoscopic treatment of renal and ureteral calculi in children has become more feasible. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of 23 patients aged 14 years and younger who had undergone ureteroscopy for the treatment of ureteral or renal calculi at our institution. RESULTS: A total of 27 stones were t

[Unenhanced spiral CT in urolithiasis: indication, performance and interpretation].

Unenhanced spiral computed tomography is now applied in the investigation of patients with acute flank pain to search for suspected urinary tract calculi. Spiral CT can depict urinary calculi more accurately than plain radiographs, sonography or excretory urography, and can be performed using a low dose protocol. Almost all urinary calculi, including calculi composed of uric acid, xanthine and cystine, can be detected. In addition to determining size and location of the stone, unenhanced helical CT can predict its composition. Furthermore, it reveals secondary signs of obstruction, such as dil

[Sarcoidosis with hypercalcemia, urolithiasis, renal insufficiency, and heart failure].

A 65-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of thirstyness and left lower abdominal pain. On admission, he was found to have urolithiasis, renal insufficiency (BUN: 73 mg/dl, Crt: 4.4 mg/dl), and hypercalcemia (13.2 mg/dl). Chest X-ray films and computed tomograms showed enlargement and calcification of the hilar lymph nodes, and thickened interlobar fissures in both lungs. Levels of angiotensin converting enzyme (30.2 IU/l) and 1.25 (OH)2VitD3 (66.4 pg/ml) were elevated. Histologic examination of the specimen obtained from transbronchial lung biopsy showed non-caseous epithelioid c

Nephrocalcinosis and urolithiasis in carbonic anhydrase II deficiency syndrome.

We report three new Kuwaiti patients with carbonic anhydrase II deficiency (CA II) from two unrelated families. Each patient had osteopetrosis, distal renal tubular acidosis, and cerebral calcification. Patients from family 1 (a brother and a sister) had some facial anomalies and delayed development. At the age of 14 months, ultrasound studies in the girl showed medullary nephrocalcinosis which has not been previously described in association with CA II, while cerebral CT scan revealed dilated ventricles. The patient from family 2, who had two previously reported affected siblings, developed b

[Anesthesia-free extracorporeal piezoelectric shock wave lithotripsy for urolithiasis].

In November 1991, a third generation extracorporeal shock wave lithotriptor (Piezolith 2500) was installed in our clinic. We examined the effective and safe aspect of this machine for urolithiasis. From November 1991 to October 1993, we experienced 530 sessions of ESWL treatment on 235 patients (270 cases). All patients except two underwent ESWL treatment without anesthesia, and in situ ESWL treatment was possible on 247 cases. The mean number of shock waves and sessions per patient of renal stone were 3369 and 2.1, respectively. Those of ureteral stone were 3970 and 1.9, respectively. The com

Xanthine urolithiasis: ultrastructure analysis of renal and bladder calculi.

The surface structure of a xanthine stone from a patient with hereditary xanthinuria was examined using scanning electron microscopy. This revealed that the xanthine stone was composed of at least two very different structures. One was a spherical protrusion with craters and a fine granular surface and the other consisted of a granular growth of plate-like crystals.

Treatment of paediatric urolithiasis by extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy.

Non-surgical removal of renal and ureteral stones has proven successful in adults. In this study, 21 paediatric patients have been treated with the first generation extracorporeal shock-wave lithotriptor and an additional 13 children with a second generation local shock-wave lithotriptor. A total of 47 stones was treated. Treatment-related complications such as colics (17%/18.8%) or fever (8.3%/6.2%) were minimal. Stone passage occurred in 93% and 100%, respectively of each group. Open surgery is still the treatment of choice for large staghorn calculi. Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy ca
