Diagnosis and classification of autoimmune uveitis.

Uveitis is the most common ophthalmological finding in the practice of rheumatology and clinical immunology. The condition is frequently idiopathic and defined by the inflammatory status of the uvea, the part of the middle eye that includes the iris, ciliary body and choroid. Anterior uveitis involves the iris and ciliary body, while the posterior form is limited to the retina and choroid. Both forms represent indications for an urgent evaluation by an ophthalmologist as untreated cases may cause blindness. Anterior uveitis is associated with the HLA-B27 allele and is a classification criterio

Magnetic resonance imaging of uveitis.

INTRODUCTION: Uveitis is a term used to describe inflammation of the choroid, iris, or ciliary body, which make up the uveal tract. It can be idiopathic or associated with a systemic disease which may be infectious or noninfectious. With the exception of B-scan ultrasonography, current imaging methods for diagnosing and monitoring uveitis are predominately non-radiologic. Although MRI has been anecdotally shown to detect various inflammatory conditions of the globe, such as posterior scleritis, endophthalmitis, and posterior uveitis secondary to Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease, a more comprehensi

Eye involvement in the spondyloarthropathies.

Eye inflammation, especially uveitis, is a prominent feature of spondyloarthropathies. Uveitis associated with ankylosing spondylitis and Reiter's syndrome usually is a unilateral acute anterior uveitis with a high tendency to recur sometimes in the contralateral eye. Uveitis associated with undifferentiated spondyloarthropathy, inflammatory bowel disease, and psoriasis may be less characteristic in its presentation, with a higher tendency to posterior pole involvement, bilaterality, and chronicity. Although acute anterior uveitis is grouped into the spectrum of human leukocyte antigen B27-rel

Uveitis in Adults: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Uveitis is characterized by inflammation of the uvea-the middle portion of the eye composed of the iris, ciliary body, and choroid-causing eye redness, pain, photophobia, floaters, and blurred vision. Untreated uveitis may cause cataracts, glaucoma, macular edema, retinal detachment, optic nerve damage, and vision loss. OBSERVATIONS: Uveitis predominantly affects individuals aged 20 to 50 years. Anterior uveitis affects the iris and ciliary body (41%-60% of cases); intermediate uveitis affects the pars plana (attachment point of vitreous humor) and peripheral retina (9%-15%); post
