The role of misinformation in COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in low- & middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, timely vaccination was crucial in acquiring herd immunity. While high-income countries typically had better access to vaccines, interventions were implemented to improve accessibility for low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Vaccine uptake presented major barriers to achieving herd immunity globally and was more significant in LMICs. Vaccine hesitancy was amplified by misinformation, including but not limited to social media misinformation. This scoping review aims to: (1) explore the role of misinformation in COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in LMICs an

Development and Validation of an Extended Adult Vaccine Hesitancy Scale in Greek-Speaking Populations.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is a complex global public health threat requiring validated tools for its assessment globally. This study aimed to evaluate an extended adult Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (aVHS) among Greek-speaking adults. METHODS: This study evaluated a newly developed extended version of a widely used aVHS, incorporating five additional items on long-term safety, risk-benefit evaluation, vaccine-related harm, scientific credibility, and perceived alternatives, on a cross-sectional sample of 491 adults in Greece and Cyprus. Cross-cultural adaptation of the extended aVHS involv

Vaccine hesitancy and uptake during pregnancy: investigating the role of emotional mental imagery.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy and suboptimal vaccine uptake pose significant threats to public health, but modifiable psychological factors underpinning them are under-investigated. We examined the prevalence of spontaneous emotional mental imagery relating to infectious diseases and perinatal vaccines and its unique associations with vaccine hesitancy and uptake behaviour. METHODS: In a two-part longitudinal study, a sample of 411 English-speaking pregnant women attending a large public maternity hospital in Western Australia completed a baseline survey assessing levels of vaccine hesitancy

COVID-19 and Influenza Vaccine Acceptance and Hesitancy Among Caregivers of Children With Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Children with cancer are immunocompromised and at increased risk for severe outcomes from infections such as COVID-19 and influenza. Vaccination is recommended, but caregiver perceptions in this high-risk group are not well characterized. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of English- and Spanish-speaking caregivers of pediatric oncology patients at a large urban pediatric hospital between March and June 2022, during evolving COVID-19 vaccine authorization and recommendations for children. The survey assessed vaccine-related knowledge, attitudes, and hesitancy regard

COVID-19 pediatric vaccine Hesitancy: Themes and interactions with verified twitter accounts.

BACKGROUND: Though vaccine hesitancy and misinformation has been pervasive online, via platforms such as Twitter, little is known about the characteristics of pediatric-specific vaccine hesitancy and how online users interact with verified user accounts that may hold larger influence. Identifying specific COVID-19 pediatric vaccine hesitancy themes and online user interaction and sentiment may help inform health promotion that addresses vaccine hesitancy more effectively among parents and caregivers of pediatric populations. METHODS: Keywords were used to query the public streaming twitter ap

Hesitancy towards COVID-19 booster vaccine among healthcare workers in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Despite completing the COVID-19 vaccination series, healthcare workers (HCWs) remain at an elevated risk of re-infection. Booster uptake, though essential for this group, remains poorly characterized among Bangladeshi HCWs. This study identified the prevalence and driving factors behind booster hesitancy among Bangladeshi HCWs, providing valuable insights for targeted interventions. METHOD: From December 2022 to June 2023, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among 1772 HCWs enrolled from 20 healthcare facilities of all tiers purposively selected across four administrative divisi

A systematic review on the psychological factors behind vaccine hesitancy in the COVID-19 era.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy may represent a global threat because of its inherent consequences for health, social and economic systems. Understanding the factors associated with vaccine hesitancy is fundamental to developing effective healthcare policies. While previous studies have mainly focused on sociological and cultural variables and transient illness-specific fears and beliefs, the present systematic review focuses on the psychological factors (such as emotional dispositions, cognitive functioning and expectations, and stable personality traits) associated with vaccine hesitancy durin

Specialist physician perspectives on clinical decision support to address secondary vaccine hesitancy.

BACKGROUND: Vaccines are an evidence-based intervention that mitigates the impact of infections, yet many Americans indicate hesitancy toward receiving vaccines. One of the most common reasons for this is the potential for experiencing adverse reactions when receiving vaccines. The current literature shows that clinical decision support (CDS) tools have been utilized to improve vaccine coverage. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess specialist physician experiences, practices, and levels of comfort with evaluating adverse and allergic reactions to vaccines, as well as with addressing secondary vac

"It was tidak cocok (incompatible)": Incompatibility, Decoloniality, and Vaccine Hesitancy in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

In 2018, vaccine hesitancy marked the nationwide measles-rubella vaccination campaign in the Indonesian province of Aceh. The hesitancy, which was supported by the provincial government, stemmed from concerns over porcine contamination in the vaccine product. "Tidak cocok" (incompatible) became a pervasive statement used to rationalize the refusal to participate in the vaccination program, permeated personal narratives, public responses to a vaccine allergy case, and an official meeting to determine the vaccination campaign's future. In this article, I theorize incompatibility as a lexical ite

Understanding COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in Malaysia: Public perception, knowledge, and acceptance.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy has been around since the introduction of smallpox vaccine. Vaccine hesitancy has become more intense due to the rise of vaccine information in social media and mass adult vaccination during COVID-19 pandemic. This study investigated knowledge, perception, and reasons for rejection of the COVID-19 vaccine among Malaysian adults who refused to get free COVID-19 vaccination. METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey using an embedded mixed-method study [QUAN(quali)] was conducted among Malaysian adults. The quantitative section consisted of a 49-item questionnaire,

Historical Lessons on Vaccine Hesitancy: Smallpox, Polio, and Measles, and Implications for COVID-19.

Vaccine hesitancy continues to pose a formidable obstacle to increasing national COVID-19 vaccination rates in the US, but this is not the first time that American vaccination efforts have confronted resistance and apathy. This study examines the history of US vaccination efforts against smallpox, polio, and measles, highlighting persistent drivers of vaccine hesitancy as well as factors that helped overcome it. The research reveals that logistical barriers, negative portrayals in the media, and fears about safety stymied inoculation efforts as early as the 18th century and continue to do so.

Emergence of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases: The Perfect Storm of Hesitancy, Refusal, a Pandemic, and War.

The landscape of pediatric vaccination has changed dramatically due to changing attitudes toward immunizations and recent world events. The rise of vaccine hesitancy and refusal related to the concurrent rise of social media and anti-vaccination messages with misinformation campaigns have led to populations of children being unimmunized or under-immunized. These populations have been left vulnerable to the rapid spread of vaccine-preventable infection. Additionally, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the clinical syndrome known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COV

Prior trauma exposure, posttraumatic stress symptoms, and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy.

Understanding correlates of COVID-19 vaccine intentions is critical for increasing vaccine uptake. Given associations of trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with alterations in threat sensitivity and health behaviors, we hypothesized they could influence COVID-19 vaccine acceptance and hesitancy and be important variables to consider in the design of vaccination campaigns. Data came from a longitudinal online study of 544 US adults with high levels of pre-pandemic trauma and PTSD, assessed in August/September 2020 and March/April 2021. Individuals reported socio-demographi

Parental coronavirus disease vaccine hesitancy for children in Bangladesh: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) requires mass immunization to control the severity of symptoms and global spread. Data from developed countries have shown a high prevalence of parental COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. However, parental vaccine hesitancy data in low- and middle-income countries are scarce. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of parental vaccine hesitancy and identify subgroups with higher odds of vaccine hesitancy in parents in Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the parents of children aged <18 years from October 10, 2021 to October 3
