Polio and measles: reasons of missed vaccination in Italy, 2015-2017.

BACKGROUND: Also in Italy, a flourishing evidence confirms the recent spread of vaccine hesitancy movements resulting in approximately 4-7% of the paediatric population not immunised every year against polio and approximately 9-15% against measles in the last few years. The aim of this paper is to describe the reasons of polio and measles missed vaccination in Italy, in the period 2015-2017, and to analyse any potential effect of the 2017 mandatory vaccination law. METHODS: Number of missed vaccinations in children younger than 24 months, stratified by reason, were collected separately for me

Free Riding on the Harm Principle.

There are two main ways in which a mandatory vaccination policy is often defended-by accusing vaccine refusers of 'free riding', or by appealing to the 'harm principle'. In their recent book, Roland Pierik and Marcel Verweij take the latter approach-an attractive option, as they note, due to the wide acceptance of the harm principle. But in arguing that vaccine refusal should indeed be thought to constitute harm, they end up endorsing a very controversial version of the harm principle, which we should not automatically expect to secure widespread support. Steven Smith suggests that this (commo

Vaccine hesitancy and other obstacles to COVID-19 control: lessons from smallpox.

The world confronts today a disease which was unknown as recently as early 2019. Now that there is a safe and effective vaccine against COVID-19, lessons can usefully be drawn from previous well documented vaccination efforts. Of these, the best documented and most successful is the Smallpox Eradication Program (SEP). A review was made of publications by major players in smallpox eradication, respecting the important differences between the disease, this review revealed several points of connection. Cultural factors loomed large both in the eradication of smallpox and progress, to date, in the

A toddler with transient synovitis and COVID-19 infection.

Transient synovitis of the hip is a common medical emergency in children. Although reactive arthritis in adults may occur 1-4 weeks after COVID-19 infection or post-vaccination, few reports of transient synovitis in children associated with acute COVID-19 infection have been made. Transient synovitis of the hip occurs most frequently in children 3-8 years of age with a recent upper respiratory infection, bacterial infection, or trauma. This case report presents a unique case of an otherwise healthy 15-month-old girl with right hip pain and the refusal to ambulate associated with COVID-19 infec

Secret shopper survey indicates that veterinarians are split on how to respond to vaccine-hesitant dog owners.

OBJECTIVE: To assess how veterinary practices respond to vaccine-hesitant dog owners. METHODS: We fielded a secret shopper survey in 6 states (California, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington) from February 4 to April 11, 2025. Callers posing as dog owners collected observational data on whether or not the practice imposed any restrictions on dog owners regarding vaccinations as well as whether they required specific vaccinations before accepting patients. We relied on descriptive analyses as well as logit models to assess outcomes. RESULTS: Of the 5,053 veterinary practices

Critical dynamics in population vaccinating behavior.

Vaccine refusal can lead to renewed outbreaks of previously eliminated diseases and even delay global eradication. Vaccinating decisions exemplify a complex, coupled system where vaccinating behavior and disease dynamics influence one another. Such systems often exhibit critical phenomena-special dynamics close to a tipping point leading to a new dynamical regime. For instance, critical slowing down (declining rate of recovery from small perturbations) may emerge as a tipping point is approached. Here, we collected and geocoded tweets about measles-mumps-rubella vaccine and classified their se

Status of COVID-19 vaccination in patients undergoing dialysis in China: a national cross-sectional study (2022).

INTRODUCTION: Due to their comorbidities and frequent exposure to healthcare settings, patients undergoing dialysis are at a high risk of developing severe COVID - 19. However, there are no customized vaccination guidelines for this group in China. This study had two aims: to systematically evaluate the current status of COVID - 19 vaccination among Chinese dialysis patients and to offer a basis for policy - making and further research. METHODS: This study was conducted across all provinces in mainland China using the stratified randomization method. Electronic questionnaires were distributed

Barriers and Facilitators of HPV Vaccination in the VFC Program.

This study determined facilitators and barriers to human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination perceived by providers of healthcare in the federally funded Pennsylvania Vaccines for Children (PA VFC) program. The cross-sectional study gathered descriptive data through a survey research design. Providers of healthcare were recruited through an email containing a link to an 18-question online survey. The survey was divided into four main sections which assessed the perceived facilitators and barriers to HPV vaccination of PA VFC program-eligibles. Survey respondents represented 65 of 66 Pennsylvania

Determinants of vaccine hesitancy among primary healthcare workers in Türkiye.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are pivotal to sustaining public confidence in vaccination. This study assessed attitudes toward vaccine hesitancy, vaccine-related knowledge, and professional factors among primary healthcare workers (PHCWs) in Türkiye. We conducted a cross-sectional study among PHCWs in Erzurum (Eastern Anatolia), Türkiye. A structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire captured sociodemographics, vaccine-related knowledge, practices and recommendations, and the 21‑item Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (higher scores=greater hesitancy). Analyses included descriptive statistics, correlat

Attitudes regarding vaccination on the example of COVID-19 prevention.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccines for public use were approved at the turn of 2020 and 2021. The level of vaccination coverage against COVID-19 in Poland is one of the lowest in Europe. Despite scientific studies there are people who are afraid of vaccinations and spread false information about them. Vaccinations against COVID-19 allowed to learn about the attitudes of people who decided to be vaccinated, which can be used to improve the effectiveness of the infectious diseases prevention in the work and public environment. The aim of the study was to analyze the main reasons determining a decisio

Admissions due to vaccine preventable diseases in a large paediatric intensive care unit in Greece over a 10-year period.

AIM: Childhood immunisation is an important preventive measure. However, care givers may delay routine immunisations or seek exemptions from state vaccine mandates. Vaccine refusal creates barriers on vaccine coverage and leads to morbidity and mortality. METHODS: Our study reviews morbidity and mortality from vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) in a large paediatric intensive care unit in Greece over a 10-year period. RESULTS: During the study period, 73 cases of VPDs were recorded, corresponding to 3.5% of total paediatric intensive care unit admissions. Influenza was the most prevalent VP

Childhood vaccination among Polish immigrants in Norway: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Confidence in childhood vaccination is high in Norway and the Norwegian Childhood Immunization Programme (NCIP) achieves high overall coverage rates. However, lower coverage has been observed for some immigrant groups, including Polish immigrants who represent the largest immigrant group in Norway. Anti-vaccine sentiments and increased refusal of mandatory childhood vaccination has been on the rise in Poland, but it is unknown whether such attitudes also apply to Polish immigrants in Norway, as they experience a different vaccination policy and perhaps also different attitudes to v

A successful mandatory influenza vaccination campaign using an innovative electronic tracking system.

BACKGROUND: Although influenza vaccination of healthcare workers reduces influenza-like illness and overall mortality among patients, national rates of vaccination for healthcare providers are unacceptably low. We report the implementation of a new mandatory vaccination policy by means of a streamlined electronic enrollment and vaccination tracking system at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcome of a new mandatory staff influenza vaccination program. METHODS: A new hospital policy endorsed by all the component NIH institutes and the Clini

Unravelling parental decision-making for adolescent HPV vaccination in China by COM-B framework: a discrete choice experiment.

BACKGROUND: The paper provides a novel perspective beyond existing theoretical frameworks by integrating the COM-B model with discrete choice experiments (DCEs) to quantify parental decision-making dynamics for adolescent HPV vaccination. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Two cross-sectional surveys were conducted in Wuxi, China, before and after the introduction of free domestic bivalent vaccines. Multinomial logistic regression identified COM-B predictors of vaccination intention, whereas DCEs quantified parental preferences. Latent class analysis (LCA) linked preference heterogeneity to COM-B d

Therapeutic Response to Treatment of a Papillomatous Ocular Surface Squamous Neoplasia With Intramuscular Human Papillomavirus Vaccine.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the response of a papillomatous ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) to the intramuscular (IM) 9-valent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine after failed medical and surgical interventions. METHODS: A 79-year-old White man with a conjunctival lesion underwent a biopsy which revealed OSSN and positivity for high-risk HPV. Initially treated with medical therapy and surgical excisions, the patient developed a recurrence and refused further surgery. He was given 4 doses of IM HPV vaccine at the 6-week interval. RESULTS: A dramatic reduction in

Same household, different choices: variation in health behaviors related to respiratory viruses in Illinois.

While SARS-CoV-2 and influenza continue to place a significant burden on population health, within-household differences in decisions towards vaccination and seeking care across these two pathogens, and across sociodemographic groups, remain largely unexplored. By conducting a household-level survey in Illinois, we found that many individuals made inconsistent decisions about vaccination: among all adults, 29% were vaccinated for only one of COVID-19 or influenza, and among those with children in the home, 39% lived with a child whose influenza or COVID-19 vaccination status differed from thei

Reactive mass vaccination campaign against cholera in the COVID-19 context in Cameroon: challenges, best practices and lessons learned.

INTRODUCTION: since 1971, Cameroon is facing a growing series of cholera epidemics despite all the efforts made by the government to address this huge public health threat. In 2020, in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cameroon recorded a high cholera case fatality rate of 4.3% following epidemics noted in the South, Littoral and South-West regions. The Cameroon Ministry of Public Health, has thus organized a reactive vaccination campaign against cholera to address the high mortality rate in the affected health districts of those regions. The objective of this study was to describe the challe

Structured Antenatal Counselling Improves Maternal Influenza and Pertussis Uptake: A Prospective Comparative Study in Greece.

AIM: Maternal immunization is essential for preventing severe influenza and pertussis in pregnant women and young infants. Despite clear recommendations, uptake in Greece remains suboptimal, and evidence on effective antenatal interventions is limited. This study evaluated the impact of a structured counselling programme on maternal influenza and pertussis vaccination coverage. METHODS: A prospective before-after study was conducted among 595 pregnant women delivering at a regional perinatal centre across two influenza seasons (2022-2023 and 2024-2025). During the pre-intervention period, rou
