Association between pro-vegetarian dietary pattern and the risk of protein-energy wasting and sarcopenia in patients with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by structural abnormalities in nephrons, loss of functional nephrons, and impaired renal excretory function. A pro-vegetarian dietary pattern (PDP) is a gradual and progressive approach to vegetarianism. The current study aimed to assess the association between PDP and the odds of protein-energy wasting (PEW) and sarcopenia in patients with CKD. METHODS: The present cross-sectional study was conducted on kidney disease patients (n = 109) referred to two clinics in Shiraz, Iran. The diagnosis of sarcopenia and PEW was made according to

Plant-based drinks for vegetarian or vegan toddlers: Nutritional evaluation of commercial products, and review of health benefits and potential concerns.

There is an increasing trend today towards plant-based diets in western society, often resulting in milk restriction. In the case of very young children, the direct substitution of milk by other foods, without proper nutritional advice, may lead to a lack of nutrients and hence to growth and development alterations. This study focuses on the nutritional assessment of various commercially available plant-based drinks, to determine their adequacy as alternatives to ruminant milk, in relation to the nutritional requirements of toddlers (1-3 years old), and to establish whether other sources of nu

Association between vegetarian diets and cardiovascular risk factors in non-Hispanic white participants of the Adventist Health Study-2.

The association between dietary patterns and CVD risk factors among non-Hispanic whites has not been fully studied. Data from 650 non-Hispanic white adults who participated in one of two clinical sub-studies (about 2 years after the baseline) of the Adventist Health Study-2 (AHS-2) were analysed. Four dietary patters were identified using a validated 204-item semi-quantitative FFQ completed at enrolment into AHS-2: vegans (8·3 %), lacto-ovo-vegetarians (44·3 %), pesco-vegetarians (10·6 %) and non-vegetarians (NV) (37·3 %). Dietary pattern-specific prevalence ratios (PR) of CVD risk factors wer

[Effects of lacto-vegetarian diet and stabilization core exercises on body composition and pain in women with fibromyalgia: randomized controlled trial].

BACKGROUND: fibromyalgia is a disease of unknown origin characterized by chronic muscular pain. The lack of knowledge about this disease is one of the main causes that makes complex to make a diagnosis and an appropriate treatment. OBJECTIVE: the main objective of this study was to know the efficacy of a physiotherapy treatment combined with a lacto-vegetarian dietary-nutritional intervention, on low back pain and body composition in women with fibromyalgia. METHODS: twenty-one women were randomly divided into three groups: A (core stabilization exercises + lacto-vegetarian diet), B (placebo

The association between high plasma homocysteine levels and lower bone mineral density in Slovak women: the impact of vegetarian diet.

BACKGROUND: A long-term vegetarian diet is generally poor in vitamin B group. The lack of vitamin B(12) together with vitamin B(6) and folate deficiency is closely related to homocysteine metabolism. Hyperhomocysteinemia was found to be associated with increased bone turnover markers and increased fracture risk. Thus, hyperhomocysteinemia, vitamin B(12) and folate deficiency may be regarded as novel risk factors for micronutrient deficiency-related osteoporosis. AIM OF THE STUDY: To assess the possible impact of a vegetarian diet on bone mineral density in cohort of Slovak vegetarian women.

Cause-specific and all-cause mortalities in vegetarian compared with those in nonvegetarian participants from the Adventist Health Study-2 cohort.

BACKGROUND: There have been mixed results reported internationally when associating vegetarian dietary patterns with all-cause and cause-specific mortalities. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to extend our previous results by evaluating, with a larger number of deaths (N = 12,515), cause-specific mortalities comparing different vegetarian types with nonvegetarians. METHODS: This prospective study used data from the Adventist Health Study-2 cohort. Mortality was ascertained between study baseline, 2002-2007, and follow-up through 2015. Dietary data were collected at baseline using a validated qua

Adherence to Pro-Vegetarian Food Patterns and Risk of Oesophagus, Stomach, and Pancreas Cancers: A Multi Case-Control Study (The PANESOES Study).

We aimed to evaluate the association between three previously defined pro-vegetarian (PVG) food patterns and the cancers of the oesophagus, stomach, and pancreas in a multi case-control study. We analyzed data from a multi-case hospital-based study carried out in two Mediterranean provinces in Spain. A total of 1233 participants were included in the analyses: 778 incident cancer cases, histologically confirmed (199 oesophagus, 414 stomach, and 165 pancreas) and 455 controls. A dietary assessment was performed using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Three PVG food patterns (genera

Pesco-Vegetarian Food Components Promote Colonocyte Ferroptosis in Preclinical Mouse Models and a Randomized Crossover Trial in Healthy Human Adults.

BACKGROUND: Diet plays a critical role in colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention. Pesco-vegetarians, who consume both high fiber and fish containing n-3 (ω-3) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), have the lowest CRC risk. Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death characterized by the accumulation of lipid hydroperoxides that has emerged as a target for anticancer therapies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the broad utility of diet modulation as a promising avenue to modulate ferroptosis in the colon. METHODS: 1) Immortalized young adult mouse colonic epithelial cells (YAMC) were treated

Cross-Sectional Study of the Prevalence of Cobalamin Deficiency and Vitamin B12 Supplementation Habits among Vegetarian and Vegan Children in the Czech Republic.

Vegetarian (VG) and vegan (VN) diets in childhood are of growing interest due to their perceived health and environmental benefits. Concerns remain due to the possible disruption of healthy growth and development of children because of the scarcity of evidence-based studies. Among the nutrients of special concern is vitamin B12. Therefore, the Czech Vegan Children Study (CAROTS) decided to examine the relationship between B12 metabolism parameters and B12 intake through diet and supplementation. We analyzed laboratory parameters within n = 79 VG, n = 69 VN, and n = 52 omnivores (OM) children (

Vegetarian Diet and the Mechanics of Root Canal Dentin: Surface Hardness, Scanning Electron Microscopy-quantified Tubule Irregularity, and Diametral Tensile Strength.

INTRODUCTION: Root dentin is essential in shaping, bonding, and long-term stability. Since mineralized tissues depend on adequate calcium, phosphate, and vitamin intake, this study investigated whether long-term vegetarian dietary patterns are associated with changes in root dentin microstructure and mechanical properties compared to omnivores. METHODS: Twenty-four extracted human teeth were assigned to vegetarian (VEG) or omnivore (OMNI) groups based on ≥3-year dietary history. Mid-root dentin discs were prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to quantify tubule circularity and aspec
