Gene expression in rat vestibular and reticular structures during and after space flight.

Space flight produces profound changes of neuronal activity in the mammalian vestibular and reticular systems, affecting postural and motor functions. These changes are compensated over time by plastic alterations in the brain. Immediate early genes (IEGs) are useful indicators of both activity changes and neuronal plasticity. We studied the expression of two IEG protein products [Fos and Fos-related antigens (FRAs)] with different cell persistence times (hours and days, respectively) to identify brainstem vestibular and reticular structures involved in adaptation to microgravity and readaptat

Role of the flocculus in the development of vestibular compensation: immunohistochemical studies with retrograde tracing and flocculectomy using Fos expression as a marker in the rat brainstem.

After unilateral labyrinthectomy in rats, Fos-like immunoreactive neurons appeared in the ipsilateral medial vestibular nucleus, contralateral prepositus hypoglossal nucleus and contralateral inferior olive beta subnucleus. and thereafter gradually disappeared in accordance with the development of vestibular compensation. This finding indicated that the activation of these nuclei is the initial event of vestibular compensation. In the present study, retrograde tracing experiments revealed that these Fos-like immunoreactive neurons project a proportion of their axons to the vestibulocerebellum

Imaging of vestibular function and disorders and its clinical relevance.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss recent advances in imaging of the structural organization and functional connectivity of central vestibular disorders with various MRI techniques. Vestibular paroxysmia, in particular the characteristics of neurovascular cross-compression of the eighth nerve, serves as an example of the peripheral vestibular disorders. MAIN FINDINGS: The bilateral vestibular system is intricately connected with other sensory systems and is hierarchically organized within sensory, motor, cognitive, emotional, and memory networks. This has been demonstrated by fMRI using galvanic v

Dorsolateral medullary infarction: a neurogenic cause of a contralateral, large-amplitude vestibular evoked myogenic potential.

The vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) has become a useful tool to assess the saccule and inferior vestibular nerve function. Vestibulopathies involving the saccule or inferior vestibular nerve typically result in VEMP responses that are diminished or absent on the involved side. Abnormally large VEMPs are rare. Large VEMPs have been associated with superior canal dehiscence, Ménière's disease, and labyrinthine fistula. In all of these cases, the abnormally large VEMP can be explained on the basis of labyrinthine hydromechanical changes that result in excessive saccular displacement i

Current treatment of vestibular, ocular motor disorders and nystagmus.

Vertigo and dizziness are among the most common complaints with a lifetime prevalence of about 30%. The various forms of vestibular disorders can be treated with pharmacological therapy, physical therapy, psychotherapeutic measures or, rarely, surgery. In this review, the current pharmacological treatment options for peripheral and central vestibular, cerebellar and ocular motor disorders will be described. They are as follows for peripheral vestibular disorders. In vestibular neuritis recovery of the peripheral vestibular function can be improved by treatment with oral corticosteroids. In Men

Distribution and structural characterization of neurons giving rise to descending spinal projections in the turtle, Pseudemys scripta elegans.

Descending spinal projections were investigated in the turtle Pseudemys scripta elegans following injections of horseradish peroxidase and/or radioactive wheat germ agglutinin into the spinal cord at various levels. Using various planes of section the cells of origin in the brainstem, cerebellum, and diencephalon were characterized according to their size, dendritic tree, and precise location. Projections to levels as far caudal as the lumbar spinal cord were found to arise from medial and lateral rhombencephalic reticular fields, including the perihypoglossal complex, the nucleus raphe inferi

Vestibular abnormalities in encephalopathia pugilistica.

Vestibulological examination of boxers revealed that 80% had vestibular abnormalities. These were obvious, but well compensated, so that they remained hidden in everyday life and appeared only on laboratory examination or under stress. Regarding the origin of vestibulo-ocular reflex, abnormalities in boxing contribute three etiopathogenetic factors: the first is the direct traumatization of the vestibular apparatus by a direct blow. The second is the diffuse damage of the brain-stem white matter and of vestibular nuclei. The third factor is the traumatization of the cervical spine via the trau

Impact of Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation on Anxiety Level in Young Adults.

Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a non-invasive method used to stimulate the vestibular system. The vestibular system includes the sensors, neural pathways, vestibular nuclei and the cortical areas receiving integrated vestibular inputs. In addition to its role in postural control or gaze stabilization, the vestibular system is involved in some cognitive functions and in emotion processing. Several studies have revealed a modulating effect of vestibular stimulation on mood state, emotional control, and anxiety level. Nevertheless, GVS is known to induce motion sickness symptoms such as

Functional connectome of brainstem nuclei involved in autonomic, limbic, pain and sensory processing in living humans from 7 Tesla resting state fMRI.

Despite remarkable advances in mapping the functional connectivity of the cortex, the functional connectivity of subcortical regions is understudied in living humans. This is the case for brainstem nuclei that control vital processes, such as autonomic, limbic, nociceptive and sensory functions. This is because of the lack of precise brainstem nuclei localization, of adequate sensitivity and resolution in the deepest brain regions, as well as of optimized processing for the brainstem. To close the gap between the cortex and the brainstem, on 20 healthy subjects, we computed a correlation-based

The endocrine system, vertigo and balance.

Steroid, amine and peptide hormones affect the peripheral vestibular system. Vasopressin hypersensitivity of the endolymphatic sac may be implicated in the pathogenesis of Meniere's disease. Specific vasopressin antagonists will help define the role of vasopressin in Meniere's disease. The modulation of central vestibular pathways by neuroactive steroids may involve effects on gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic and glutaminergic pathways. The vestibular nuclei also express enzymes that are important in the synthesis of steroids and the modulation of their activity. Steroids mediate both facilitator

Cholinergic innervation of the cerebellum of the rat by secondary vestibular afferents.

The cholinergic innervation of the cerebellar cortex of the rat was studied by immunohistochemical localization of choline acetyltransferase, radiochemical measurement of ChAT activity, and double labeling of ChAT-positive neurons with HRP injected into the cerebellum. ChAT immunohistochemistry revealed large mossy fiber rosettes as well as finely beaded terminals with different morphological characterization, laminar distribution within the cerebellar cortex, and regional differences within the cerebellum. Large "grapelike" ChAT-positive mossy fiber rosettes that were distributed primarily in

Dizziness.

BACKGROUND: The article gives an overview of the most frequent forms of vertigo, that are of peripheral-labyrinthine, central-vestibular, psychogenic, or physiologic origin. Dizziness or vertigo is a result of a mismatch between 3 sensory systems: the vestibular, the visual, and the somatosensory systems. These systems are mutually interactive and redundant in that orientation and balance are guided by simultaneous reafferent cues. The functional ranges of the systems overlap, thus permitting them to compensate in part for each other's deficiencies. SUMMARY: Vertigo is not a well-defined dise

Anterior cingulate cortex glutamatergic projection neurons modulate motion sickness susceptibility via a cortico-vestibular circuit.

Motion sickness (MS) is a prevalent and debilitating vestibular disorder with limited therapeutic options, yet the cortical mechanisms governing individual susceptibility remain elusive. Using a biaxial rotation mouse model, we investigated the role of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in MS by integrating morphology, calcium imaging, electrophysiology, cell ablation, chemogenetics, and optogenetics. Biaxial rotation induced hypothermia, anorexia, taste avoidance, locomotor hypoactivity, and gait incoordination. ACC pyramidal neurons exhibited enhanced activation and increased intrinsic exci

Pre-operative vestibular pattern and balance compensation after vestibular schwannoma surgery.

This longitudinal study aimed to assess the sensorimotor balance strategies before and after vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery according to the degree of pre-operative vestibular lesion. Thirty-eight VS patients were split in three groups according to caloric vestibular test results before surgery; nine had a symmetrical vestibular response (vestibular normoreflexy), 19 with a decreased response of more than 20% of the affected side (vestibular hyporeflexy) and 10 with an absent caloric response on the side of the affected labyrinth (vestibular areflexy). They underwent pendular rotary vestib

Vestibular responses in the rhesus monkey ventroposterior thalamus. II. Vestibulo-proprioceptive convergence at thalamic neurons.

The vestibular thalamic relay in the Rhesus ventrobasal complex, identified in a previous field potential study (part I, Deecke et al., 1974), has now been investigated with neuronal recordings in the thalamus in order to clarify its functional role. In part I, short latency responses (2.5 msec) were found in the corner between VPL, VPM and VPI nuclei, largely including dorsal portions of the VPI nucleus. Field potentials of somewhat longer latency (4-5 msec) were recorded in VPL and in other thalamic nuclei, including the posterior nuclear group. Neuronal responses were recorded in thalamic n

Benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood.

Benign paroxysmal vertigo of childhood is a vestibular disorder characterized by multiple sudden brief episodes of true vertigo with nystagmus usually beginning after the age of 4. The diagnosis is based on the characteristic history, because the otologic and neurologic examinations, electronystagmogram, audiogram, and electroencephalogram are usually normal. The etiology of the disorder remains unknown, although a vascular disturbance of the posterior circulation with ischemia of the labyrinth or vestibular nuclei is most commonly postulated. A review of the literature and five new cases are

[On the mechanism of ikaron-1 anti-naupathia action].

Pneumomicroinjection of vestibuloprotector ikaron-1 (Russia) in specific neurons of the medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) was studied in cats immobilized by muscle relaxants using microelectrode devices. The original preparation had a direct effect on the majority of MVN neurons (95 %). Thirty four neurons of 37 cells (92 %) developed an inhibitory response, only one cell (3 %) was activated and 2 neurons (5 %) were areactive. Therefore, the inhibitory reaction to the preparation was 34 times more often than excitatory. An investigation of the MVN neurons activity evoked by adequate stimulation

Quantitative changes in mRNA expression of glutamate receptors in the rat peripheral and central vestibular systems following hypergravity.

In order to investigate the mechanisms responsible for adaptation to altered gravity, we assessed the changes in mRNA expression of glutamate receptors in vestibular ganglion cells, medial vestibular nucleus, spinal vestibular nucleus/lateral vestibular nucleus, cerebellar flocculus, and uvula/nodulus from rats exposed to hypergravity for 2 h to 1 week using real-time quantitative RT-PCR methods. The mRNA expression of GluR2 and NR1 receptors in the uvula/nodulus and NR1 receptors in the medial vestibular nucleus increased in animals exposed to 2 h of hypergravity, and it decreased gradually t
