Quantitative Proteomic Analysis of Venoms from Russian Vipers of Pelias Group: Phospholipases A₂ are the Main Venom Components.

Venoms of most Russian viper species are poorly characterized. Here, by quantitative chromato-mass-spectrometry, we analyzed protein and peptide compositions of venoms from four Vipera species (V. kaznakovi, V. renardi, V. orlovi and V. nikolskii) inhabiting different regions of Russia. In all these species, the main components were phospholipases A₂, their content ranging from 24% in V. orlovi to 65% in V. nikolskii. Altogether, enzyme content in venom of V. nikolskii reached ~85%. Among the non-enzymatic proteins, the most abundant were disintegrins (14%) in the V. renardi venom, C-type lect

Snake venomics of the Siamese Russell's viper (Daboia russelli siamensis) -- relation to pharmacological activities.

The venom proteome of Daboia russelli siamensis, a snake of medical importance in several Asian countries, was analysed by 2-D electrophoresis, subsequent MS/MS and enzymatic assays. The proteome comprises toxins from six protein families: serine proteinases, metalloproteinases, phospholipases A(2), L-amino acid oxidases, vascular endothelial growth factors and C-type lectin-like proteins. The venom toxin composition correlates with the clinical manifestation of the Russell's viper bite and explains pathological effects of the venom such as coagulopathy, oedema, hypotensive, necrotic and tissu

[Aggravation of snake bite in France and their treatment].

VIPERS AT THE ORIGIN OF ENVENOMING: Out of the 4 species of vipers found in France, only two can be responsible for severe envenoming: the aspic viper (Vipera aspis) and the addetr (Vipera berus). CLINICAL GRADING: Since 1992, a grading table published by the Institut Pasteur in Paris helps to assess the severity of the clinical and biological picture. A grade 2 (extensive oedema +/- accompanied by moderate general signs) or notably a grade 3 (giant oedema + severe general signs + biological signs) implies the administration of an antivenom. ANTIVENOM VIPERFAV: Available on the market since 20

Vipers of Major clinical relevance in Europe: Taxonomy, venom composition, toxicology and clinical management of human bites.

Snakebites in Europe are mostly due to bites from Viperidae species of the genus Vipera. This represents a neglected public health hazard with poorly defined incidence, morbidity and mortality. In Europe, fourteen species of "true vipers" (subfamily Viperinae) are present, eleven of which belong to the genus Vipera. Amongst these, the main medically relevant species due to their greater diffusion across Europe and the highest number of registered snakebites are six, namely: Vipera ammodytes, V. aspis, V. berus, V. latastei, V. seoanei and V. ursinii. Generally speaking, viper venom composition

Use of Pavo cristatus feather extract for the better management of snakebites: neutralization of inflammatory reactions.

In Indian traditional medicine, peacock feather in the form of ash (Bhasma) or water extract are used against snakebite and to treat various problems associated with lungs. This study was aimed to evaluate the water extract of peacock feather (PCF) against the local tissue damage caused due to snakebite. PCF water extract showed inhibition towards phospholipase A2 enzyme activity from snake venom (Naja naja and Vipera russelii), inflammatory fluids (synovial, pleural, ascites) and normal serum in a dose-dependent manner. Hyaluronidase and proteases are other major enzymes in snake venoms respo

Natural anti-snake venom proteins.

The resistance of several animals to snake venom has been reviewed. Some general concepts are introduced to allow the comparative evaluation of the resistance of different animals studied by different investigators. The purification and properties of several factors isolated from the serum of different animals by some researchers are described: Trimeresurus flavoviridis (Omori-Satoh et al., 1972); Vipera palaestinae (Ovadia et al., 1975, 1977); Sigmodon hispidus (Pichyangkul and Perez, 1981); Didelphis virginiana and Didelphis marsupialis (Menchaga and Perez, 1981; Moussatché et al., 1979, 198

Comparative Proteomic and Peptidomic Analysis of Venom From Three Viper Taxa: Evaluating Software-Specific Protein and Peptide Profiles.

Snake venom is increasingly recognized in biomedical research as a potential source of relevant proteins that are still relatively unknown in various species. In this experiment, we performed proteomic and peptidomic quantification and identification of the venomic profile of three viper taxa: Montivipera blugardaghica subsp. bulgardaghica (MB), Vipera ammodytes subsp. montandoni (VA), and Vipera kaznakovi (VK); and compared the performance of three peptide identification software: PEAKS, MaxQuant, and Proteome Discoverer. Overall, PEAKS identified 19 unique proteins (19 in MB, 11 in VA, and 1

Protein structure of the venom in nine species of snake: from bio-compounds to possible healing agents.

Due to its various structures in bio-compounds, snake venom is the indisputable result of evolutionary stages of molecules with an increasingly complex structure, high specificity, and of great importance for medicine because of their potential. The present study proposed an underpinning examination of venom composition from nine species of venomous snakes using a useful and replicable methodology. The objective was the extension of the evaluation of protein fractions in the field up to 230 kDa to permit possible identification of some fractions that are insufficiently studied. The gel capilla

Selective inhibition of group II phospholipase A2 by quercetin.

The influence of quercetin, chlorpromazine, aristolochic acid, and indomethacin on group I phospholipase A2 (PLA2) from porcine pancreas and on group II PLA2 from Vipera russelli was compared. Quercetin and chlorpromazine were found to inhibit PLA2 activity in lower concentrations (< 100 microM), while aristolochic acid and indomethacin were inhibitory only in higher concentrations (> 100 microM). The order of potency against Vipera PLA2 was: quercetin > chlorpromazine > aristolochic acid > indomethacin, while the order of potency against pancreatic PLA2 was: chlorpromazine > aristolochic acid

[Local complications after poisonous snake bite].

The case of a zoo keeper who was bitten on the left finger by a venomous snake (Vipera xanthina) is reported. The administration of antivenom prevented the development of systemic poisoning but had no effect on the extent of the local complications. A compartment syndrome with a concomitant severe reaction at the bite site required fasciotomy of the upper and lower arm. The extensor tendon of the involved finger ruptured spontaneously, many weeks after wound healing was completed. Therefore, delayed local complications following snake bites may occur, even if signs of systemic poisoning are mi

[Lymphoedema after an adder bite].

Bites from the adder, Vipera berus, are well known for causing local and general toxicity. We report a case of a 63-year-old female who was bitten in one of her lower extremities. She was seen twice in the emergency department with symptoms and signs consistent with severe envenomation. Despite treatment with antihistamines and corticosteroids the oedema persisted. A lymphoscintigraphy was performed showing dermal backflow in the right leg, confirming the diagnosis of lymphoedema. Based on the present case report and review of the literature antivenom therapy should be considered more actively

Longitudinal and cross-sectional study of Chlamydia serpentis in captive snakes: Insights from two successive outbreaks in a zoological institution.

Among the Chlamydia species known to infect snakes, C. serpentis is a recently described pathogen. A first outbreak of C. serpentis in the snake collection of a zoological institution was documented in 2018. In 2023, a wild-caught asp viper (Vipera aspis) tested positive by PCR for C. serpentis, following introduction with two snakes of the same species that had tested positive in 2018. Real-time PCR analysis was used to detect the presence of C. serpentis in oral/cloacal swabs and tissue samples from snakes, and environmental samples from the terrariums of confirmed infected individuals. A se

Complex regional pain syndrome following viper-bite.

BACKGROUND: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) may occur following fractures, surgery or different trauma. Development of CRPS following snake-bite has only been published in three reports (from Turkey, Nepal and Korea), although snake bites occur frequently world-wide. There has been no report from Western Europe. Vipera Berus is a common snake in European countries and the only venomous snake in Norway. We here describe the development of CRPS in a young woman as a consequence of a viper bite (Vipera Berus) in the right arm. METHODS: We performed a clinical investigation (inspection, mea

[Snake bite in a 53-year-old female tourist].

Snake bites are rare events in Germany and are not life-threatening with usually only mild clinical symptoms. The most widespread venomous snake is the common European adder (Vipera berus). Here we present the case of a 53-year-old woman who was bitten by a common adder. Although the patient was initially in stable condition she developed edematous swelling of the complete lower limb, subcutaneous bleeding, and rhabdomyolysis. The aim of this report is to raise awareness that even in a central European country like Germany snake bites with a life-threatening course can occur and need immediate

Adder bite: an uncommon cause of compartment syndrome in northern hemisphere.

Snakebite envenomation is an uncommon condition in the northern hemisphere, but requires high vigilance with regard to both the systemic effects of the venom and the locoregional impact on the soft tissues. Bites from the adder, Vipera Berus, may have serious clinical consequences due to systemic effects. A case of a 44-year-old man is reported. The patient was bitten in the right hand. He developed fasciotomy-requiring compartment syndrome of the upper limb. Recognition of this most seldom complication of an adder bite is vital to save the limb. We recommend that the classical signs and sympt

[Compartment syndrome following adder bites].

Bites from the adder, Vipera Berus, can have serious clinical consequences due to systemic effects. Meanwhile, the local swelling calls for attention as well. Two cases of seven- and eleven-year-old boys are reported. The first patient was bitten in the 5th toe, the second in the thumb. Both developed fasciotomy-requiring compartment syndrome of the lower and upper limb, respectively. Recognition of this most seldom complication of an adder bite is vital to save the limb. We recommend that the classical signs and symptoms of compartment syndrome serve as indication for surgery. However, compar

Altogether 11 cases of stings in dogs are reported. In at least nine cases, common vipers (Vipera berus) were identified to be the causes. The most frequently observed symptoms were haemorrhagic and oedematous inflammations of the area of the wounds, furthermore haemolysis and intense leukocytosis with relative and absolute neutrophilia and in some cases shock symptoms. One dog died 17 days after the accident from multiple organ insufficiencies, all the other dogs improved.
