Knowledge and prevention of tickborne diseases among Hispanic and non-Hispanic residents of Maryland and Virginia.

Tickborne diseases (TBDs) such as Lyme disease (LD), babesiosis, ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever cause substantial morbidity and even mortality in the USA. Data indicate that Hispanic populations may be at greater risk for occupational exposure to ticks and disseminated LD; however, information on knowledge and practices of Hispanic populations regarding TBDs is limited. We surveyed 153 Hispanic and 153 non-Hispanic residents of Maryland and Virginia to assess awareness of TBDs, prevention practices and risk of tick encounters. Hispanic respondents were less likely than non-Hispa

The effect of crash characteristics on cyclist injuries: An analysis of Virginia automobile-bicycle crash data.

This paper examines bicyclist, automobile driver, vehicle, environmental, and roadway characteristics that influence cyclist injury severity in order to determine which factors should be addressed to mitigate the worst bicyclist injuries. An ordered probit model is used to examine single bicycle-single vehicle crashes from Virginia police crash report data from 2010 to 2014. Five injury severity levels are considered: fatalities, severe injuries, minor or possible injuries, no apparent injuries, and no injury. The results of this study most notably found automobile driver intoxication to incre

Alcohol, drugs, and links to sexual risk behaviors among a sample of Virginia college students.

This project was significant in that it administered the National College Health Risk Behavior Survey (NCHRBS), a health risk assessment, to a sample of students at three public universities in Virginia. Virginia was never included in the original or subsequent nationwide assessments using this instrument. This health risk assessment is comprehensive, easy to administer, and free. The NCHRBS assesses risk behaviors in six categories including: (1) behaviors that contribute to unintentional and intentional injuries; (2) tobacco use; (3) alcohol and other drug use; (4) sexual behaviors that cont

Field comparison of novel and gold standard traps for collecting Aedes albopictus in Northern Virginia.

Aedes albopictus is a potential West Nile virus bridge vector in Northern Virginia; however, information regarding its virus transmission dynamics is limited, as this species is not readily collected in existing traps. This study used 5 replicates of a 5 x 5 Latin square to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of 2 novel host-seeking mosquito traps (the BG-Sentinel and the Collapsible Mosquito Trap (CMT-20) in collecting Ae. albopictus, relative to a carbon dioxide (CO2)-baited Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) miniature light trap. When used with CO2, the BG-Sentinel (with

Bulimic symptoms in the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioral Development: correlates, comorbidity, and genetics.

BACKGROUND: This paper addresses bulimia symptoms in a large community sample of twins aged 8 to 17 years. We aim to identify environmental correlates of bulimia symptoms and relationships with other psychiatric disorder symptoms. The twin design allows examination of the structure of genetic and environmental effects. METHODS: DSM-IIIR bulimia symptoms and consequential impairment were measured by interview in the first wave of the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioral Development. Comorbidity with other psychiatric symptoms and environmental correlates were examined and the relative

Characterization of metastatic intestinal adenocarcinoma with differentiation into multiple morphologic cell types in a Virginia opossum.

A captively maintained mature male opossum (Didelphis virginiana) utilized in a research protocol was presented with clinical signs of chronic diarrhea and severe muscle wasting. At necropsy, there was multifocal mural gastric, intestinal, and urinary bladder thickening, concurrent bilateral hydroureter and hydronephrosis, and extensive fibrous abdominal adhesions. Histologic evaluation revealed intestinal adenocarcinoma with coelomic metastasis to the stomach and urinary bladder. The adenocarcinoma was evaluated using histochemistry and electron microscopy. Paneth, enteroendocrine, and goblet

Patient experiences with pre-abortion healthcare interactions in Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky after Dobbs.

Since the Dobbs decision, abortion seekers have experienced frustration and distress in navigating care within dynamic legal contexts. Pre-abortion interactions with healthcare professionals, such as clinicians and administrative staff working in healthcare settings other than abortion clinics, may play an important role in one's abortion-seeking journey. In this study, we examined how patients perceived the impact of their pre-abortion healthcare interactions when seeking abortion in three states that restricted abortion after Dobbs and how these interactions facilitated or impeded abortion a

Chemical Composition of Secretions from Facial Glands of Captive Hoary Bat (Lasiurus cinereus) in Virginia.

Our study represents the first known report of hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) facial gland histology and chemical characterization of facial gland secretions. While in captivity from October 2023 to February 2024, facial secretions of a male hoary bat were observed and collected. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of a methanol extraction of November 2023 samples identified 23 compounds after comparing retention times, mass spectra, and Kovats retention index. These compounds consisted of alkanes, alcohols, ketones, terpenoids, monoacylglycerols, and androgens. Of interest wa

Characterization of patients receiving surgical versus non-surgical treatment for infective endocarditis in West Virginia.

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) has increased in rural states such as West Virginia (WV) with high injection drug use. IE is medically managed with antimicrobial treatment alone or combined with surgical treatment. This study aimed to characterize the predictors associated with surgical treatment and rates of inpatient mortality and readmission among IE patients in WV's rural centers. METHODS: This retrospective review of electronic health records includes all adults hospitalized for IE at major rural tertiary cardiovascular centers in WV during 2014-2018. Descriptive statistics were

Acceptability of safe drug consumption spaces among people who inject drugs in rural West Virginia.

AIM: Safe consumption spaces (SCS) are indoor environments in which people can use drugs with trained personnel on site to provide overdose reversal and risk reduction services. SCS have been shown to reduce fatal overdoses, decrease public syringe disposal, and reduce public drug consumption. Existing SCS research in the USA has explored acceptability for the hypothetical use of SCS, but primarily among urban populations of people who inject drugs (PWID). Given the disproportionate impact of the opioid crisis in rural communities, this research examines hypothetical SCS acceptability among a

Heterogeneity among juvenile antisocial behaviours: findings from the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioural Development.

The examination of heterogeneity in antisocial behaviour was accomplished by applying latent class analytic methods to multivariate categorical data on 389 same-sex male twins, aged 11 to 16 from the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioural Development (VTSABD). The data included multiple measures of oppositional and conduct disorder, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, impulsivity, reading disability and anxiety from mother, teacher, and child report from both questionnaire and interview (child and adult psychiatric assessment; CAPA). A latent four-class model provided a good fit

Medical grand rounds. West Virginia University Health Sciences Center. Bites and stings. Part 1. Spiders.

Most animals can bite or sting. In narrowing the kingdom down to those that harm humans, the field still is vast. It would be interesting to explore the rich variety of pathology produced in us by moray eels, lionfish, sea urchins, jellyfish, sting rays, fire ants, kissing bugs, flies, lice, mosquitoes, ticks, mites, fleas, puss caterpillars, centipedes, snakes, dogs and cats, camels, and myriad other creatures including homo sapiens (not a trivial biter)--but for this grand rounds, the topic will simply be spiders (Part 1), bees and vespid (Part 2). Vespids are the wasps, yellow jackets and h

Babesia odocoilei Emerson and Wright, 1970 in white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann), in Virginia.

Pooled blood samples from six white-tailed deer from the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia were inoculated into two splenectomized deer. A moderately severe clinical reaction ensued, characterized by a hemolytic anemia, and a Babesia found in both recipient animals was presumptively identified as B. odocoilei. This is the first reported identification of this parasite in white-tailed deer in Virginia.

Mass Mortality in Migrating American Robins (Turdus migratorius) in Virginia, USA: Data Beyond a Diagnosis.

While investigating an American Robin (Turdus migratorius) mass mortality event in February-March 2022 in southwestern Virginia (USA), we collected parasites, investigated gizzard contents, and described flock demographics. We recovered ectoparasites (ticks, mites, lice) from 32/83 (38.7%) individuals. Ten of 83 (12.0%) American Robins presented with scaly mites (Knemidocoptes) and varying levels of disfiguring keratin growth on their legs. We report that 57.1% of individuals harbored endoparasites and 90% of intact ventriculi contained seeds, pulp, or husks from American holly (Ilex opaca) be

The association between healthcare access and shingles vaccination among older adults in Virginia, United States.

INTRODUCTION: Shingles is a debilitating vaccine preventable disease that poses a health threat to older adults. However, the uptake of shingles vaccines remains low, and the factors contributing to the low uptake are not clearly understood. This study assessed the association between healthcare access and shingles vaccination among older adults, as well as the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on vaccine uptake. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study among adults 50 + years in Virginia (n = 16,576) using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (2018, 2019, and 2021). We calcula

Limited access to pharmacy-based naloxone in West Virginia: Results from a statewide purchase trial.

BACKGROUND: West Virginia (WV) has the highest overdose mortality rate in the United States and expanding naloxone access is crucial for reducing opioid overdose deaths. We conducted a purchase trial to establish an objective measure of naloxone access under WV's naloxone standing order (NSO) program. METHODS: A stratified random sample of 200 chain and independent retail pharmacies across WV were included. Each pharmacy underwent two purchase attempts-one by a person who used illicit opioids (PWUIO) and one by a potential bystander who did not use illicit opioids but had a relationship with
